Bundled with a space-saving stand mount, the black Neumann TLM-102 Condenser Microphone Vocal Studio Kitlarge-diaphragm condenser microphone brings renowned Neumann sound quality to a price point that's inclusive to home producers, working musicians, and independent singer-songwriters. The capsule's high SPL rating of 144 dB permits the recording of percussion, drums, amplifiers, and other loud sound sources clearly and without distortion. With its 8 to 12 kHz treble boost, the TLM 102 imparts a silky vocal presence while avoiding pronounced sibilance.

The mic utilizes a cardioid polar pattern to provide directional sound pickup in front of the capsule and strong rejection behavior behind it, yielding less background noise than most other polar responses. The integrated pop shield reduces breath noise and vocal plosives, though external pop filters are available for even more control. The TLM 102's transformerless output stage aids the mic in achieving a clean character with plenty of reach in the bass range, and it delivers resistance to electromagnetic interference.

Neumann developed the TLM 102 as a universal talent for vocal and instrumental recordings. Its finely tuned sound signature especially accents the area of 8 to 12 kHz which is crucial for human voices. The recordings get a silky elegance typical of large-diaphragm microphones; the voice gets a noble presence in the overall mix. Nevertheless, the TLM 102 remains easy to handle and deals masterfully with critical consonants or sibilants, thanks to the integrated pop shield.

The TLM 102 also processes extreme volume and jumps in dynamics without distortion. That makes it an excellent choice for miking loud amps and drums. It reproduces sound pressure levels of up to 144 dB (e.g. very loud trumpet at a distance of about 4") with great clarity: open, detailed, with powerful bass and refined treble.

The TLM 102 stands for legendary sound on a budget. Neumann remodeled the production and omitted non-vital functions such as pattern, pad, and low-cut switches. When you hear the TLM 102, you'll immediately notice what they did not omit: the Neumann sound, which remains faithful to its big role models.

The TLM series works with a transformerless output stage to enable a clean and direct sound, very "close" to the acoustic source, and a powerful bass transmission all the way down to the lowest frequencies. Its transformerless output stage also makes the microphone resistant to electromagnetic fields and minimizes transmission losses.

  • Easy handling for vocal and instrumental recordings
  • Distortion-free sound even at extreme sound pressure levels up to 144 dB
  • Slight treble boost for silky vocals (independent of music genre)
  • Built-in pop shield reduces vocal plosives
  • Cardioid polar pattern lessens background noise
  • XLR 3-pin output
  • Requires 48V phantom power
  • Includes stand mount

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Do you need mixer to plug in computer?

A: This studio condenser microphone requires an audio interface, with an XLR mic preamp that provides 48 volt phantom power, that would then convert the analog signal to a digital signal to go into the computer. The Audient iD14 10x4 USB Audio Interface, BH #AUID14 is an example of an audio interface with high-quality mic preamp's and superior analog to digital conversion.

Q: 2. Does the kit include the mic mount?

A: Yes, the shock mount for this microphone includes the mic holder.

Q: 3. Product Highlights mentions that there Includes Elastic Suspension Shockmount However, in In The Box it is absent. Might be an error. Does it or does it not come with the shockmount?

A: The Auray suspension shockmount came with the kit order for me.

Q: 4. Is it suitable for stringed instruments like sitar.

A: This large diaphragm mic would work recording a sitar, or other stringed-instrument, providing a bright and lively sound. But I would strongly consider looking at a small diaphragm microphone for recording a sitar. Consider the Neumann KM 184 MT Microphone (Matte Black), BH #NEKM184MT, which can placed 4 to 8 feet from the instrument and gives a very realistic recreation of the sitar’s droning and twangy sound.

Q: 5. When I click in the box it says the set has limited warranties on the items already is this true?

A: The items in this vocal studio kit do have manufacturer's warranties included.

Q: 6. Where was this microphone made?

A: The Neumann TLM-102 is made in Germany.

Q: 7. Wat type of audio jack

A: This microphone requires a standard XLR to XLR Microphone Cable: For example: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/867273-REG/kopul_m5020_quad_pro_cable_xlr_m.html

Q: 8. Can these power Sennheiser 650 headphones?

A: The RME Babyface Pro FS 24-Channel USB-B Audio/MIDI Interface will work with 300-ohm headphones, like the Sennheiser HD 650, although a dedicated headphone amp may yield more desirable results.

Q: 9. Does this need 48V phantom power?

A: Yes, since its a condenser mic, so it requires 48V phantom power, which is normally available with every pre-amp.

Q: 10. What other mics did you compare before purchasing? Looking for voiceovers primarily.

A: The 103 is an excellent choice of microphones, depending on the person using it (voice characteristics) and how it will be used, specfically, the room acoustics and level of quiet, as this mic is very sensitive and will "hear" everything. Great suggestion, esp if purchased with shock mount: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/302934-REG/Neumann_TLM_103_ANNIVERSARY_TLM103_Condenser_Microphone_Package.html OTHER considerations: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/676495-REG/AKG_3059Z00060_C_414_XL_II.html For a more challenging acoustic environment: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1182891-REG/shure_shure_sm_7b_brodcaster_package.html

[Phantom Power] I currently own a Neumann u87 and after a little subtractive eq and slight eq bumps here and there I have actually preferred the 102 over it for many applications. Out the box it reminds me of a voice over mic with its presence and heavy low end. I don't get as much sibilance with it compared to my u87. I have used it for hip hop vocals with great results with my avalon 737. This mic is extremely small and can fit in the palm of your hands or pocket. I also sold some of my larger gear and purchased a duet for ipad. I am loving how my gear is getting more compact. I feel as though the technology is allowing for a great sound in much smaller devices without sacrificing quality.

[Cardioid] For my book narrating, this microphone is nothing short of wonderful. A touch smaller than some of the more expensive ones, which works very well in my DIY recording booth. I shopped hard and decided on this with an Apogee One. Perfect combination. Very highly recommended....and it's a keeper.

[Black] I'm familiar with TLM-102s and have recorded with them for a number of years. The 102 I recently purchased from B&H has had no problems so far and has already provided lots of audio at the high level of quality I need for my projects, even standing up to an unorthodox recording setup for COVID-19. This product has cemented my opinion of 102s as one of the best value Neumann microphones.

[1.09 lb] The Neumann mic is a magnificent piece of equipment. It delivers the highest quality sound at a fair price. A huge step up from my former mic, which will be nameless. I couldn’t be happier.

[Black] This is the best mic I've ever had. I used this next to a Neumann u47 and preferred the smoothness and eq of this mic for my voice. I now have a pair.
