Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Just bought the MV7 - is it safe/recommended to just leave it plugged in to my PC's USB and be on at all times? Or should I plug/unplug as needed? Does it matter?

A: Yes, you can leave the Shure MV7 Podcast Microphone connected to your computer at all times without causing damage to the mic or computer.

Q: 2. why is the silver version cheaper than the black one?

A: B&H priced it that way, but silver and black are the same microphones just a different color. Black is more popular thats why price is a little higher. Hope this helps.

Q: 3. Want to use this with an XLR connected to a Zoom H5. Does the mic draw power from the Zoom?

A: The Shure MV7 Podcast Microphone is a dynamic microphone, so it does not require phantom power when connected via XLR.

Q: 4. is the usb cord that comes with the mic long enough for the boom arm that comes with the kit?

A: The USB cable that is included with the microphone is 10 feet long.

Q: 5. How does this mic compare to something like the Blue Yeti Pro?

A: There is no comparison, the Yeti Pro has 3 capsules and can be used for Mono or Stereo applications, the MV7 is a podcast microphone , with a single cardioid voice coil, and the output is Mono only.

Q: 6. is there a shock mount that will work with the MV7? and what is the best pop filter to use with it?

A: The MV7 has a built-in shock mount as well as a built-in pop filter so a separate shock mount and pop filter are not necessary. The mic's yoke mount can be attached directly to a studio arm or standard mic stand. The studio arm may provide better isolation. Like the SM7b which also has a built-in shock mount, the MV7 is not designed to be used with a separate shock mount. Although there is a built-in pop filter, i is possible to add a separate pop filter such as the Auray PFSS-55 Pop Filter with Gooseneck and Springloaded Clamp (B&H # AUPFSS55). The springloaded clamp makes it easy to attach to the mic's yoke mount or a studio arm or stand. You can find a variety of other compatible pop filters listed under the "Accessories" tab on the MV7 item page.

Q: 7. If I want to use the MV7 with the Zoom H6 would I need a cloudlifter?

A: A Cloudlifter is recommended, as this Mic has low sensitivity and requires a lot of gain, which may increase noise. It does depend on the Mic Pre; see below. At a sensitivity of -55 dBv, the Shure MV7 would require 55dB of gain to achieve the same level as what is "heard" by MV7 diaphram. As an example, a Focusrite Solo has Mic Pre gain of: "Up to" +56 dB this means the Mic Pre Gain would have to be fully cranked to achieve unity gain. Please note that the higher the negative dBV, the lower the sensitivity. That is, a mic with a sensitivity of -56dBV is less sensitive than a mic with a sensitivity of -38dBV, but more sensitive than a mic with a sensitivity of -65dBV. A more logical way to look at it is to think about how much gain will be required to amplify the test signal up to a level of one volt (One Volt is the "Unity Gain" number), the level as supplied "Into" the microphone.

Q: 8. How large is the capsule in the MV7, possible to get some specs?

A: Shure has not provided specs for the capsule used inside the Shure MV7 Podcast Microphone.

Q: 9. Will the USB and XLR work simultaneously? For example, is it possible to use the USB and headphones for an online interview, while also recording a WAV via XLR?

A: Yes, the Shure MV7 does allow you to record audio from the USB and XLR outputs at the same time.

Q: 10. What are the benefits of connecting it via XLR (to an audio interface) vs connecting it to the computer via USB?

A: Using the Shure MV7 Podcast Microphone's XLR output connection allows for customizing your signal chain for use with an interface of your choice and a clean recording of the microphone's audio signal. The advantage of the USB connection is the elimination of an external interface and direct connection to a computer for recording.

[500 mW] Great mic for those who want a podcast and don't want to deal with an audio mixer to make things sound good. The hybrid option to go XLR or USB gives you the option to use a mixer, if you wish, so you're not really losing anything. The include Motiv software more than makes up for any EQ situations you might run into sans mixer. White some may like the switch settings and yoke-mounted XLR plug on the SM-7B, you will find these abilities tucked away in the Motiv software to program the mic via USB, so you really don't lose out on much of anything. It's even a more compact design than the SM-7B, allowing a better fit for those with smaller studio space. The sound quality is nearly identical, but you'll find the MV-7 having a slightly different element. Otherwise, it's a solid performer. What you lack in switches you'll make up for on the LED ring surrounding the mic head. That built in VU meter really makes things nice.

[Gold] This is dynamite in a small package. I like having the flexibility to use the MV7 via USB or XLR. If you're just getting into podcasting or voiceovers, this is a great mic to start with. I did add a pop screen for mine, just to help a bit. I throw the audio into Audition, make a few adjustments, and it sounds great. Would highly recommend.
