The black ALA-C1 Apogee Line Array Speaker System from Bogen is a passive indoor/outdoor loudspeaker well suited to gymnasiums, cafeterias, lecture halls, community theaters, and similar small- to medium-sized venues. The wide 140° horizontal dispersion offers broad side-to-side coverage, while the more focused 25° vertical dispersion limits unwanted reflections from the floor and ceiling for clearer, more intelligible sound.

Rated IP65 for weather resistance, the speaker offers an elegant and durable powder coated extruded aluminum alloy enclosure with internal ribs for added sturdiness. Housed inside are six 1" tweeters for high frequencies and nine woofers with 4" diaphragms for the mids and low-end. A 70V transformer is built in with an 8-ohm bypass option.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can these be used in stereo or bridged to mono or would I need two sets?

A: The Toa Electronics HX-5B Variable Dispersion Line Array Speaker use a single SpeakON or M4 terminal input connection and will not produce a stereo signal with a single unit. A pair of HX-5B, one receiving the left channel and the other receiving the right channel, would be required for a true stereo image.

Q: 2. I can only hear the hi and. Not the mid im probably connecting them wrong anyone can help me?

A: The HX-5W is a full range speaker array that features 5 woofers. It is best to use this array with a subwoofer for a fuller sound and to minimize the impact low end frequencies can have on the relatively small 5 woofers. Another possibility is that the woofers are blown out, causing you to hear only mid and high frequencies. It would be advisable to contact TOA Product support at 800-733-4748 (option 2) for warranty claims.

Q: 3. What would be a good amp to pair with a pair of these speakers?

A: It depend how it is used, if you are using these speakers for speeches, and normal music you can use the DA-250D this gives you 250 watts per speaker. If you are using it in a loud music environment you can use the DA-250F in a bridge mode, that will give you 500 Watts per speakers.Another configuration with Subs, two of them, you can use the FB-120, and add another DA-250D for the subs.

Q: 4. Could you you use this speak with a stereo?

A: Yes. as long as your stereo is not more than 175watts (peak) at 8ohms. You would need two for stereo.

Q: 5. Can you connect additional speakers?

A: Yes, the Bose L1 PRO8 Portable Line Array Speaker System with Bluetooth features an XLR M Line Out connection for sending signal to other speakers.

Q: 6. Can you use this speaker in a home theater system?

A: Yes, you can use the Bogen Armadillo speaker with a home theater system, but it may not have as much definition as other speakers would that are specifically designed for use in home theater systems.

Q: 7. I have a cat 6 cable what colors do I hook up to the speakers

A: The Bogen MB8TSQ connects to speaker cable to be powered by an amplifier like BH #CO182P0500 for example. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/908458-REG/comprehensive_cac_18_2_p_500_2_conductor_stranded_plenum.html

Q: 8. we have a live band the like to play loud will these be able to handle it?

A: No!! They start distorting around 95dbc.

Q: 9. Want to replace Bose tall colum speakers with the Toa Array in a old Catholic church app. 160ft throw using a Crown CDI 1000 at 70 volts. will 2 do it or do I need 2 more to carry to the back of the church?

A: Two of these speakers will not carry all the way to 160', you may need two more half way in the church. if you have a layout for the church, please send it over to this e-mail, I will get you a design for the system, also did you think about Subs for the system? naji@nfscom.com

Q: 10. Are they powered or passive?

A: Passive

[Black] My church installed a pair of these in the congregational area to replace a pair of cheap 2-way 15s. The improvements was (night and day). Vocals are clear and punchy. Highs are natural , not harsh. To totally appreciate the sound of instruments through these speakers you must add the /A sub. Which we soon are going to do soon. Then the sound would be Perfecto .

[Aluminum] Clarity and powerful. I watched a few reviews on the Bose L1 16 Pro. I picked up one and absolutely love it. You can pump this speaker at full power and no distortion. I'm so impressed with the speaker I plan to buy another one in the future.

[2-Way] I used this in two challenging installations: 1. A church with an unconventional pentagonal shape - equivalent 60 foot x 60 foot floor area with a vertex facing the altar. They replaced two legacy (REALLY Legacy!) Shure VA300-S speakers. 2. In a 400 seat university auditorium complimented by the TOA subs. The church installation is about 9 years old and is one of the best installations I have done. Teh HX-5s are suspended 12 feet above the stairs to the altar to give audio presence. That was the greatest challenge as there are two condenser mics below and just behind most of the time. I used a horizontal installation of two units to get the spread. I checked the SPL dispersion using TOA's online tool and then verified with their designers. The Auditorium has a similar challenge - installation is 30 feet above the stage and uses 4 of these units installed vertically. The design was checked using EASE. The subs are only switched on for music performances. In both cases, the sound is quite clear, unforced and natural (the priest is well voice trained). I stand to be corrected but the TOA HX-5 forced the competition to re-look line arrays and other speakers with beam control characteristics for installed sound. It is now my second pick behind the more expensive JBL CBT70J-1.

[1] Great product . Amazed at how much sound is produced in such a small speaker.

[Passive] I love this kit! The footprint is only as big as the bass unit, so no cumbersome stand-mounted speakers to fiddle with. I like that there are three inputs built in, so you can do more with this version than you could with the previous version without also buying an external mixer.

I use this for acoustic guitar and vocals, both of which are first run through a TC Helicon. I know it sounds great that way, but have not yet tested it without the Helicon. With my current kit, I definitely sound better than I really do.

For now, this is set up in my dining room, and I'm playing for an imaginary audience. But as soon as I'm up for it, I no longer have the excuse that I don't have the gear to do a proper gig. I have other excuses, but am working on those, too.

Down side? The box was mangled pretty badly by the time FedEx made the delivery three days late, but nothing inside was damaged. For $1,800, it would have been nice for Bose to include a cover for the bass unit along with the very nice carrying case that was included for the stick speaker units. Also, I love the bluetooth remote controls that mimic the controls on the back of the bass unit, but it would be nice if there was a master volume control included. As it is, you have to adjust each input separately.

[Black] This is my second L1. I run them in stereo from the mixer. Vocal, upright bass, keyboard and drums. Clear and clean sound.

[Sealed] Perfect for small and medium venues. Plenty of power great base for a full sound. I would recommend adding the tone match for added inputs and ease of adjustment.
