The ART RP-1 Preamp Dynamic Ribbon Microphonesis a preamp that relies on phantom power and is meant for use with a dynamic or ribbon microphone. It is designed to increase the performance of the microphone, allowing you to get a cleaner, more nuanced tone across long cable runs or when routing your mic into your recording interface.

The preamp accommodates one microphone via XLR connection. A variable impedance control lets you customize the performance of each of your dynamic or ribbon mics with the preamp, doing so to ensure the best tonal performance. A low-cut filter set to 100 Hz lets you take bass-heavy rumble and noise out of the signal.

The preamp runs on phantom power from mixers and interfaces, so as a bonus, you will not harm your ribbon mics with phantom power if the RP-1 sits between your mic and its eventual destination.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I want to use this item with an H4N pro and sennheiser Me66 with a K6.My question is should I get this version or the version with phantom? (I will be using the aa battery in mY K6 and not using theH4Npros's phantom power)

A: Get this one. The Zoom H4N has its own phantom power.

Q: 2. Can this be used with an unbalanced stereo mic? Considering purchasing this to shield my AT2022 from phantom power but that mic outputs stereo on XLR.

A: sorry can't help with that one - i don't have a stereo mic so wouldn't know. fethead works great with my ribbon & SM7 though. try manufacturers (Triton Audio). good luck!

Q: 3. I am considering to order a FetHead for my dynamic mic and wondering if there will be any sound or gain difference between 1) when plugging the FetHead into my mixer/recorder(Zoom F4) first and then plugging the XLR cable to the mic and 2) when plugging the cable into my Zoom F4 first and then plugging the FetHead into my mic? I am not sure if plugging the FetHead into the mixer/recorder first is even possible or not because all the YouTube reviewers use their FetHeads directly on their mics.

A: if you plug in the fathead at your mixer, you would be amplifying the noise level from your cable run as well as your mic level. The fatheads use is to get it as close to your micrphone as possible, prior to your cable run. If youre simply trying to boost gain on a short , noiseless cable run, either end is fine I suppose.

Q: 4. Plan on using this product with my Rode NTG2 and dr-40. which version do i buy?

A: I do all of my low end noise removal with SoundSoap or Izotope RX5. I would go with the version without the high pass filter. If you are using a ribbon mic that requires you to use a lot of gain, then the version with the high pass filter would probably serve you well.

Q: 5. How many versions of this product are there? And what are the differences between them?

A: There are 3 versions. The standard FetHead for dynamic and ribbon mics, the FetHead filter that adds a high pass filter to the standard design, and the FetHead Phantom which is for use with condenser mics (and does not have the high pass filter).

Q: 6. When we record with Audacity it only records one side of the speaker on both tracks, ignoring the other side, meaning it is not stereo and only one side of the track can be heard. What is the problem, usb cable or usb output port from the preamp?

A: Check your computer settings - assuming Windows, go to Control Panel-Hardware and Sound-Sound-Recording. Select the USB Audio CODEC and click Properties, then Advanced. Make sure the Default Format is 2-channel. I do this every time I want to record something - most times the setting will be remembered, but every so often it will revert to 1-channel. Very annoying if I've recorded 5 albums before I notice!

Q: 7. Is this appropriate to use with an MKE 600 and Zoom H5?

A: It would not be ideal to use the standard FetHead with the MKE 600, since the MKE 600 requires phantom power, and this version of the standard FetHead does not supply it. The standard FetHead is designed primarily for microphones that don't require external power. If you really need to pre-preamplify the MKE 600, it would be more appropriate to use the FetHead Phantom model. Otherwise, you would have to install a AA battery inside the MKE 600.

Q: 8. Will this amplifier eliminate the tinny sounding play back on my Mac when trying record from my turn table?

A: I had no problem with tinny sound

Q: 9. does this unit come with a power supply? My main intent for it is to put between my TT and Pioneer spc-1 preamp, because of the long distance between the two. I'll also use it to transfer some vinyl to computer, but for that purpose I believe the USB connection will power it.

A: The power supply is included with the USB Phono Plus.

Q: 10. Does it come with the case, mount and XLR adapter?

A: The Coles Microphones 4038 Studio Ribbon Microphone comes with an XLR cable, a soft cloth bag, a rigid carrying case, and a simple clip. The elastic suspension mount is sold separately (BH #CO4038SM).

[0.38 lb] These add just enough gain so that my console/interface preamps don't have to work so hard. I actually use them in a large Dante installation where the gains are adjusted on the wall panels, not the console. So they accomplish two objectives- blocking 48v from my ribbons, and bringing the level up to where I would run a condenser mic. Also very well built.

[0.38 lb] I use a TC Helicon harmonizer and my dynamic mic wasn't pushing it very hard. I actually had to turn the input gain to max. Once I put the
FetHead on my mic I got plenty of signal to my Harmonizer and actually had to turn down my preamps in that signal. Thanks Triton!

[-18 dBu] Got this due to my Focusrite not having enough gain for my SM7B. With everything in place I can get the gain comfortably within the working range of the Focusrite without much distortion or noise.
