The Canon EF mount Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine Lens for Canon EFfrom Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine Lens for Canon EFprovides a wide, 122° angle of view well suited for outdoor and landscape shots and in tight interior locations, and it is optimized for digital cinematography. It is so lightweight and compact that it can be used not only with handheld shooting, it is also light enough for use on gimbals. The lens produces an image circle that will cover full-frame, VistaVision, and ARRI ALEXA LF sized sensors or smaller.

The 12mm cine lens features a maximum aperture of T2.9 with 16 elements in 10 groups. Its 7-blade aperture provides a soft, pleasing bokeh, a shallow depth of field with little to no distortion, and a 7" close focus distance. The focus and aperture rings feature industry-standard 0.8 pitch gearing that will accommodate standard cine follow focus motors. The 102mm front diameter can be stepped up to 114mm with the included adapter to fit industry-standard matte boxes to prevent glare and reflection, as well as to add filters. Focus, aperture, and depth of field markings are in feet on the side of the lens to aid focus pullers.

In addition to the 114mm step-up adapter ring, a shim set is included for calibration, and a hard-shell Pelican case with custom foam is included to protect and transport the lens.

Q: 1. Will this cover Red Weapon 8k Helium Sensor

Q: 2. Does anyone know how this compares to the Irix 11mm 4.3 Cine Lens, specifically for real estate video? I can't seem to find any real comparisons online.

A: The Venus Optics Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine Lens (Leica L) is not as wide an angle as the IRIX 11mm T4.3 Cine Lens. It is however, lighter and tiny bit better in low light. Image quality wise, they are comparable.

Q: 6. So Zero-D means zero distortion i guess? and this plus the Tstop and angle of view are the differences between 9mm and 7.5mm?

A: The Zero-D would indicate as the manufacturer states, "close-to-zero distortion". The main differences between the 2 lenses, 9mm (T2.9, 100° Angle of View) and the 7.5mm (T2.1, 110° Angle of View) are the T stops and the angles of view.

A: The Venus Optics Laowa 12mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine Lens (PL Mount) (B&H# VE1229PL) is not available with an interchangeable lens mount. As of this time, there is no such alternate mount that is sold by the manufacturer.

[Canon EF] Bought this last minute and was a bit conserned at first but after using it. It's now my favorite wide.

[12mm] My only complaint would be that LAOWA didn’t make the 7.5 cine and 9 cine the same working diameter on the outside. But this is a solid wide angle lens for MFT.

[12mm] I've been looking at these lenses for over a year now, and finally being able to get my hands on one has brought such a next level image to my projects. I've only used it on a couple projects so far, but I think it's great. The parafocal ability is so great, and the lens' rings and gears are so smooth. The focal distance ring seems to have a little more resistance when moving it, but it's not a hinderance to its use. When focusing in or out, the focus breathing seems to be nonexistent and is sooooo smooth.
Specifically with the image that you get out of this lens, I think it has a wonderful amount of character/softness to the amount of sharpness. One reason I've moved over to cinema lenses is that they're not as clinical or sharp as my photography lenses, and they give my video a much more personal look and feel. But when it comes to some commercial work, my original cine lenses can be a bit too soft at a T 2.0. But this Laowa Ranger gives me the right amount of sharpness and character to use on just about any project, and having this in my daily camera rig just eliminates the hassle of switching out lenses to get the look I'm going for.
I know this review isn't very technical, but if you're a first time buyer of cinema zoom lenses, this is an incredible place to start and you won't regret it.

[5.715 lb] Excellent metal build quality on this lens. Use this on my Red Komodo and it does vignette a little in the corners when shooting at 6K, but it is acceptable. Aperture and focus rings move smoothly, although a little stiff at the moment but this should probably loosen up a bit. Definitely better than being too loose! Picture quality is excellent. Great for video. Would definitely recommend this lens for APSC and super 35 sensors, and even the Komodo sensor which is a little wider than super 35.

[Full Frame] This lens is incredible for the price, does everything it says and well built. Breathing is pronounced but forgivable due to how optically awesome it is for a lens so wide.

[Full Frame] This lens is incredible. I recently paired it with a Canon Cine 50mm and the footage holds up pretty well! Lovely wide angle with a natural look rather than GoPro style fisheye. Works really well with a follow focus and overall is a lovely lens! Would highly recommend.
