These can be setup as USB-SS3, Display or Thunderbolt. This adapter will indicate to the host that one of the SERDES is now Thunderbolt. It will also indicate to the power protocol stuff required for the Thunderbolt 2 connection. Then of course the pins will be routed to the appropriate pins on the Thunderbolt 2 connector.
