Dedicated to extreme close-up imaging, the Nikon Z-mount Laowa 25mm f/2.8 Ultra Macro Lens for Nikon Zfrom Laowa 25mm f/2.8 Ultra Macro Lens for Nikon Zis a specialized macro lens for photographing subjects at magnifications greater than life-size. Operating within a 2.5:1 to 5:1 range, this lens has a minimum focus distance of just 6.8" at the 5:1 magnification along with a comfortable 1.6" working distance. This range is benefitted by the wide-angle focal length, too, in order to achieve greater depth of field compared to long focal length macro lenses. Complementing the close-up capabilities, the optical design incorporates one extra-low dispersion element to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for a high degree of clarity. Additionally, distinguishing itself from other macro lenses, this 25mm f/2.8 is characterized by its notably sleek and lightweight design for easier handling and more room to work with artificial lighting.

Prime 25mm f/2.8 is designed for FX-format Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras but can also be used with DX models where it provides a 37.5mm equivalent focal length.

Specifically developed for macro photography, this lens is designed for use within a 2.5:1 to 5:1 magnification range for producing greater-than-life-size imagery. This lens does not offer infinity focus.

When at 5:1 magnification, the lens has a minimum focusing distance of 6.8" along with a working distance of 1.6", which affords sufficient room for illuminating your subject. At the 2.5:1 position, a minimum focusing distance of 9.2" is possible along with a working distance of 1.8".

Wide-angle design benefits the high magnification design by providing greater depth of field compared to telephoto or long lens designs.

Manual focus operation for precise control over focusing distance when working with close-up subjects.

One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.

Eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality when using shallow depth of field.

Especially slim and lightweight physical design is easier to use handheld and offers more room for illuminating close-up subjects.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. So, for those who have this lens, what do you use for a flash?

A: The Venus Macro Twin light is a good macro light option for the 25mm Ultra Macro lens. https://bhpho.to/2v1d2DM

Q: 2. I will not use it as a portrait len. But I want to know: can it take 1x or 0.25x photo? Thanks.

A: This lens will only operate within a 2.5:1 to 5:1 range.

Q: 3. Does it come with a tripod collar?

A: There is no tripod collar designed to work with this lens.

Q: 4. Is the length of the Nikon f-mount version really the same as the z-mount version?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro Lens for Nikon F and the Z mount version are the same length. The measurement length of the lens does not include the mount.

Q: 5. With the appropriate adapter, I'm curious about the quality on a micro 4/3 camera? Thanks.

A: The image quality is very good on a mft camera.

Q: 6. I know Venus Optics has a CanonFE to Micro 4/3s adapter on their website and B&H don't appear to have in their catalog. Would ANY generic adapter (such as https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1413074-REG/fotodiox_eos_mft_lens_mount_adapter_for.html) work with this lens?

A: Yes, any EF to MFT adapter will work.

Q: 7. Will this lens work with the built in focus stacking feature of the D850?

A: No, this is a manual focus lens and so FS will not function from the D850.

Q: 8. Would this lens work on my Nikon D3400 body and would you recommend a focus rail even with a solid tripod?

A: The lens will mount. You will have no exposure metering so a separate light meter or a lot of trial and error exposure adjustments will be necessary. A focus trail is HIGHLY recommended. At high degrees of magnification control of small camera movements is essential.

Q: 9. Will this fit 1971 Nikon F2?

A: Yes, the Venus Optics Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro Lens for Nikon F can be used on an old manual Nikon film camera such as the F2.

Q: 10. Hello, Is it compatible with Nikon D-800 ? Thanks :-)

A: I bought the Canon version and it worked fine on my Canon camera. If the Nikon D-800 has a Nikon F lens mount, then it should work. It has no electronic connection (no contacts). It just physically attaches.

[Full-Frame] I have only used this since the 25th but the results have been stunning. This will definitely expand my photography. The only negative is that the magnification ring is a little stiff. Otherwise, the lens has been outstanding.

[5x] I bought this to re-photograph microfiche which I have in three image sizes. It works great. Important to make sure the lens is perpendicular to the microfiche so I use a bubble level to level a light table then level the back of the camera. I also set a 1 second shutter delay so vibrations are ended when it takes the photo. Using Live View on a Nikon D850 eliminates shutter wear and also I can zoom the preview to make sure it is in focus. Then i simply touch the screen to take the photo. F8 on the lens seems to work best; a compromise between diffraction effects and a depth of field that's only a fraction of a millimeter!
The lens is quite a bit heavier and sturdier than it looks and the tapered front makes it fairly easy to get down to fine details such as crystals or insects. Field flatness is excellent and I see no barrel distortion or pincushion distortion.

[5:1] Bought this as a covid boredom cure. Love macro photography and felt like diving in deeper since we'll all be stuck inside again. Not dissapointed in the least. Have been doing some daily shots and its been a ton of fun. I do need a macro rail to work on focus stacking but so far so good.

[Manual Focus] Amazing when's you do need a lot of light though. Highly recommend if you're looking to get a different view of things.

[Nikon Z] I bought this lens to use it with my Nikon Z6. The lens is fascinating, it produces unbelievable pictures. I ordered and B&H as always delivered on the next day (B&H is the best in this business!!). I am an amateur photographer and I love macro but, regular macro was not enough and I wanted this lens so I can see the minimal details and guess what, it produces amazing images and really takes you to a different world. It may take a few until you get use to it but once you get it the lens works great. The best aperture is 5.6 and if you don't have great light you needs a speed-light (I think to produce great pics you need this anyways). Anyway, I would but this lens again anytime.
100% recommended if you are a big macro fan.

[25mm] As a Nikon owner, I'm still a bit jealous about not having the
Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x Macro Lens in my repertoire. This one is not quite at the Canon lens' level (mostly because the range from 1:1 to 1:2.5 would be very useful to me), but for the price it's amazing!

Build-quality is good and sturdy; it's all-metal, with smooth adjustment of magnification factor. Focusing means changing the distance between lens front and your subject, which works fine with a focusing rail. Aperture ring snaps nicely in place (stops at 2.6, 4, 5.6, 8, and 16).

Magnification starts at 2.5 to 1. The first attached photo of a tiny grasshopper nymph (length about 6mm) was shot at this magnification, holding my camera in my hand while lying on my side in the dirt. I used a single SB700 Speedlight with a home-made diffuser stuck to it for illumination. I would say this magnification is about the limit of what I can do hand-held.

More often, I will use this lens in a studio setting, attached to a macro focusing rail for focal stacking. The attached (not retouched) image of a froghopper (Cercopidae) is the result of a quick test with my setup, from a 30 image stack. Unfortunately, my subject started moving too, so the resulting image has motion artifacts, etc. Still, it's a very promising start. Can't wait to play with this lens some more...

[Full-Frame] This lens is extremely sharp and well corrected. There are limited options when it comes to lenses with this reproduction ratio, and for convenience and image quality this one is certainly at or near the top of the list of alternatives. As a bonus, its very nicely constructed with very little plastic to be seen, and all controls have a premium, well-damped feel to them. It's a specialist lens, but if you have need of its capabilities, you won't regret choosing this one.
