Q: 1. Does this cover protect the shotgun microphone?

A: Not really. The cover is long enough to provide some cover for short shotgun mics but ultimately your audio will be compromised by the rain cover itself. for example if you use this in the rain the sound of rain hitting the cover will be much louder than your subject simply because the rain hitting the rain slicker is so much closer to the microphone than your subject. It is best to take the microphone off the camera and have a dedicated mount with dedicated protection for the shotgun microphone to get the best audio when using this in inclement weather.

Q: 3. Does this superimpose the time date stamp onto the sd card? Is the time date stamp passed through either the sdi or hdmi during live recording?

A: The HM170UA does have a time stamp available in the recording settings. You can also output SDI or HDMI with the normal screen information on or off.

Q: 4. I see that you can record 4k and output through hdmi, but is that simultaneous 4k out put through hdmi?

A: Yes you can. The HDMI output will be 4K and you will be able to record 4K internally and output it at the same time.

Q: 5. can you sync time-code with another GY-HM170 cam?

A: Unfortunately there is no way to jam time code between two GY-HM170u camcorders. However you could always sync the camcorders up in Post Production using PluralEyes 3.5. PluraEyes syncs multiple sources using audio wave forms in programs like Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Media Composer and Vegas Pro.

Q: 6. How does the aperture scale as you zoom in? So at what focal length does it become f1.4, f1.8, etc?

A: That is a bit difficult to tell, since the actual focal length is not displayed. What is displayed is either a bar graph or a number between 0 and 99 (when digital zoom is turned off. The aperture does appear to close linearlly with zoom, not reaching F3.5 until its almost fully zoomed. Based on the 0 to 99 numeric zoom indicator, its: 0 - F1.2; 18 - F1.4; 31 - F1.6; 41 - F1.8; 51 - F2.0; 58 - F2.2; 70 - F2.5; 77 - F2.8; 90 - F3.2; 99 - F3.5. Also, when zoomed to double the widest angle, judging by the image magnified 2X, the aperture is F1.8.

Q: 8. Has anyone used the JVC GY-HM170 for performance work? What are your thoughts?

A: I used it for filming part of a movie 8 Ball Clown and am planning to use it as primary camera for 8 Ball Clown II - I like the quality, not a low light camera, the manual operation takes a bit to get used to but then again all of them do. I bought 2 extra batteries and 128G cards, so I should be able to film quite a bit without stopping. The onboard sound is pretty good - I'm probably adding wireless mics, but its good. I use Bose headphones so I can get better sound and adjust volume. note most of the movie was filmed on a canon t2i - because I just wasn't ready to switch because I had not touched the camera - but I'm more comfortable with it and will practice to get used to it. I did some minor filming for commercials in 4k and that went well - but that was outside in bright light. I will always use a dslr in low low light.I edit in Final Cut - so the video output is easy to bring in and edit - one of the reasons I went with this camera.

A: The lens is fixed and thus not interchangeable. It is threaded for filters so you could probably add a lens to the fixed lens and obtain wider angle or telephoto that way.

Q: 10. You wrote the only difference between HM170 and HM170UA is the top handle unit included in UA. But I can't find in HM170UA's specs 25fps recording mode, only 24, 30 or 60fps. Does it 25fps? I live in Hungary, most of the time I have to make standard PAL DVD too from my HD recordings, that's why I need 25fps. If the HM170UA could do 25fps, possibly I'd order one.Sadly that range of JVC pro cameras (handheld size) absolutely not known in this area (I talk not about TV companies, only the stand alone pro shooters, or smaller studios, included mine). We prefer Sony, Canon or sometimes Panasonic, none of my colleagues use pro JVC camcorder. It's hard to find footages or tests on youtube about HM170 or HM200, and the few I found were not convincing. If I could even test one, or work with for a couple of weeks, I could advise or suggest my colleagues, my acquaintance to switch to JVC, if they want to upgrade to 4K. (Lot of them thinking on it, not mainly for 4K, rather downscale to 1080 for highly detailed result.)I have to test one, It's too big risk to buy unknown.
