The Tiffen 4x4" 81D Light Balancing Filterhelps to decrease the color temperature by 500K in order to warm the image slightly in order to match the color quality of illumination. When using an 81D filter, you will be able to attain 3200K balance when the prevailing light source is 3700K. The warming effect of this filter requires a 0.6-stop increase in exposure for normal results.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. It measures 4 x 4" / 101.6 x 101.6mm.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this take 4mm thick filters?

A: Julia, yes it does!

Q: 2. Does this low-light version have less of a polarizing effect than the standard?

A: The polarizing effect is the same as other polarizers. Keep in mind this is a linear polarizer and is meant for camera systems which have older exposure metering systems. Mainly used for older film cameras.

Q: 3. Hi. Do any of the two Filter stages rotate to accommodate a Polarizer or a Grad filter? Can't seem to tell from the specs/photos. Thanks!

A: The 2nd stage, One closest to the lens rotates. The front stage does not. Hope this helps !

Q: 4. What's the widest lens you can use with this without vignetting?

A: It depends on the camera and the lens. But probably a 10mm on a Super35 camera or a 14mm on a full frame camera would work. Unfortunately, there are so many variations it is impossible to list them all and only an actual test will confirm.

Q: 5. Can I use the clamp on to a 114mm Xeen Lens?

A: 114mm is the maximum lens diameter that can fit into this matte box.

Q: 6. Can I fit a 77mm thread lens? I own a canon 85mm Ef 1.4 that I'd like to attach to this matte. If not, is there a 77mm adapter ring? Please advise!! Thank you!

A: This 77mm adapter will work with matteboxes with 114mm openings: B&H#: BRB12501071

Q: 7. Will this fit on a fujinon ha13x4.5berm-m48 2/3?

A: The Fujinon 13x4.5BERM has a 95mm front. The Tilta comes with 80, 95, and 110mm Diameter Lens Adapters. Use the 95mm to clamp-on the matte box. I would suggest using a 15mm LWS for this mattebox for easier use.

Q: 8. Will this be wide enough for a Fujinion ha13x4.5berm-m48 2/3? can somebody replay asap as I emailed B&H day ago now and no reply.

A: Sorry for the delay, it least on our side, we were attending/are now recovering from NAB in Vegas. No, it does not work, since his lens has a diameter of 127mm, and the MB-T05 only goes up to 100mm

Q: 9. How thick is this filter?

A: This filter is 4mm thick.

Q: 10. Ikan's website says the following Additionally, you get four lens adaptors (72mm, 80mm, 90mm, 114mm) however there is no mention of the 114mm adaptor on B&H. To add to my confusion Ikan state in their specs that the largest lens for matte box is 100mm. Will this mattebox fit on a 114mm lens?

A: Good question. To clarify this, The MB-T05 comes with 2 lens adapters:80mm95mmThe Donut ring measured out to be 110mm. When you remove all accessories, the MB-T05 has a lens diameter of 114mm. So the MB-T05 only has 5 options:Nuns Knickers80mm95mm110mm114mm

[0.4 lb] I use the 81B all the time on my DSLRs with the WB set to daylight, for scenics where it cuts haze, for flash, backlit and in-shade people-pictures, and in overcast. The light-loss is small and the effect seldom if ever too warm.

Incidentally other colour-correcting/-balancing filters are still useful, keeping the same daylight WB. That setting is right for interiors lit by incandescent or fluorescent, with an 80A or FL-Day over the lens. Those two really come into their own with mixed lighting, e.g. an interior with daylight coming through the windows.

B&H's price was reasonable for this large size and the shipping prompt and efficient.

[81D] A nice slim filter in new condition.

Contrary to what is often supposed by younger photographers, the 81B balancing filter is the best way of dealing with shade or overcast lighting in digital photography, as opposed to changing WB to accommodate those conditions. The human eye does not detect the blue, but it's there all the same. It also works well for backlit subjects that are effectively in shade, improving the tonality: the subject will be lightened & warmed, and to avoid overall overexposure gentle underexposure may be set. Pleasing people-pictures in what amounts to mixed lighting are one effect. The lighting in Interior shots is frequently shade, while any exterior lighting within the frame is sunlight or daylight, so the same remarks apply.

If the interior lighting is Fluorescent of course an FL-Day with WB set to Daylight works the same as a warming filter; but this is perhaps not quite the spot for that observation.

I use warming nowadays for all my c. 5000K landscape shots, not to cut UV to which the electronic sensor is insensitive, but to cut the haze in distance (which is by no means all visible to my eye-brain combo), define clouds and darken blue sky. That way what I saw is more nearly what I get.

The WB should of course be set to Daylight every time, the meter will take care of the quite modest factor.
