If you click on the Apple logo on your computer, then select About This Mac, then select service, there is an option to check my service and support coverage status as well as show my service and repair options and tell me more about the AppleCare Protection Plan . The first asks for permission to send your serial number to Apple, then opens your browser and shows you your options. If you're covered, you should see a representative picture of your laptop along with the serial number. If you're not covered, I guess you could buy the coverage from Apple directly.
