Tilt and pivot your camera in three-dimensional space with the Arca-Swiss d4 Geared Pan Classic Tripod Head, which combines the advantages of a spherical head and a 3D tilt head in one compact system.

Featuring a 66 lb load capacity (which accounts for the added stress of a heavy lens) and unobtrusive yet functional controls, the d4 can be used on a tripod like a normal spherical head. When both X- and Y-axes are open, one can move the camera freely. But, in contrast to a spherical head, X- and Y-axis movements can also be made separately, one at a time. And, if one of these axes is fixed, movements can be performed with even more precision.

The design of this head puts the center of rotation of X and Y- tilts in the same place, making the pivoting radius of these movements very small, thus allowing users to maintain perspectives during readjustment. Also, a self-locking shock absorption feature for the swivel function allows for near total compensation of the camera's weight.

In addition to manual operation, the d4 also offers the precision of separate gear-driven vertical/horizontal movements when the locking levers are fixed, with quick release clutches for fast large adjustments.

The head gives you the choice when using pan for an image, either gear driven or free movements. When the geared pan knob is pulled out, the pan movement is free for coarse and quick panning adjustments. When the geared pan knob is pushed in, the gears inside the panning device are re-engaged and will offer precision geared rotation of the camera. Using the new geared panning device, cameras and lenses can be moved micro-metrically in three axes. This movement makes the top pan movement especially useful to an Architectural photographer in finding perspective, especially one point perspective.

Two spirit levels, arranged at 90° angles underneath the upper panorama adjustment, are sufficiently visible to facilitate effective leveling, even from a low viewpoint. This head is compatible with either classic Arca-Swiss-type or newer Arca-Swiss MonoballFix-type camera plates.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this come with the plate?

A: The d4 Tripod Head does not include an Arca Swiss type plate. A compatible plate is the Arca-Swiss Universal Quick Release Plate with 1/4" Screw (40mm) and Rubber Surface, BH # ARQRP40.25 https://bhpho.to/3rTfQR2

Q: 2. I have a Really Right Stuff TA-3 Leveling Base, would this Arca-Swiss D4 Tripod Head fit into my leveling base? What is the base diameter of this tripod head?

A: I have the Acra-Swiss D4 head and use it with the TA-3 leveling base but I have it attached via a RRS B2 AS II lever release clamp and mounting plate. You should still be able to mount it to the leveling base without such a set up. I find it much easier to switch out heads and travel with this arrangement however.

Q: 3. Does the geared panning mechanism have the ability to turn off the geared planning to do a rough pan and then turn geared panning back own?

A: You have both options, either gear driven or free movements. When the knob is pulled out, the pan movement is free for coarse and quick panning adjustments. When the knob is pushed in, the gears inside the panning device are re-engaged and will offer precision geared rotation of the camera.

Q: 4. load capacity ??

A: The load capacity is 66 lbs.

Q: 5. What is the difference between "geared" vs "geared gp" ?

A: The GP stands for "geared panning" in the Arca-Swiss d4 Geared Pan Classic Tripod Head. When the geared pan knob is pushed in, the gears inside the panning device are re-engaged and will offer precision geared rotation of the camera.

Q: 6. Does it work well when mounted at 90 degrees and camera hanging on the side pointing towards the ground? Want to use it for precise micro adjustments for 1:1 macro/reproduction with DSLR being pointed downwards toward a light table.

A: Yes, the Arca-Swiss d4 Tripod Head with Classic Knob Quick Release does work well when mounted at 90 °.

Q: 7. if i am not tied to a plate system, should i go for monoballfix or classic arca plates? Not sure I understand the benefits of MonoballFix

A: This is an outstanding tripod head. I recommend it highly.

Q: 8. If I am reading the descriptions accurately the D4 (and the P0 hybrid from Arca) are 2 way geared, not 3 way geared. The Panning rotation cannot be adjusted through a knob. Is this correct?

A: Correct, it is not geared, just a locking lever.

Q: 9. For real estate and geared head, do you think this would work better than the P0 hybrid?

A: Yes, more versatile head.

Q: 10. With the d 4 classic head can I shoot 90 degrees?

A: Yes! There are two was to achieve your goal.1. Loosen one of the tear drop knobs to tip the head to the side 90 degrees. You will may have to reposition the tripod if you are shooting both horizontally and vertically.2. Use an L- plate on your camera then easily and quickly use the quick release to switch from horizontal to vertical in seconds without having to reposition the tripod.

[-40° to +40°] I’ve owned many tripod heads in the last 30+ years. My old Kirk BH-1 recently bit the dust. My other tripod head is a relatively new AcraTech GXP, which is very nice. But I thought it prudent to make the new second head a geared one for landscape photography work.
I appreciate the minute adjustments that are readily possible with this device without slippage and drift of the camera when trying to make fine adjustments. It also is capable of supporting my 500 mm lens when needed.
As expected for this price, this is a well designed and superbly fabricated piece of equipment. I expect this is the last tripod head that I will ever buy.

[Yes] I shoot architecture professionally and have been using a Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head for many years; it is build like a tank. Finally came time to replace that Manfrotto head and decided to 'treat myself' to this Arca Swiss D4. OMG!! What an absolutely AMAZING piece of gear!

Where the Manfrotto got the job done, this Arca Swiss D4 is truly a joy to work with...butter smooth, beautifully engineered and quite sturdy. Simply amazing!

I chose the Geared Pan because I am used to having a three axis setup and did not want to use an L-bracket for verticals. This is the best tripod head I have ever owned. I would not hesitate to buy it again and highly recommend this wonderful piece to anyone.

[+90° to -40°] About a year ago I purchased a knockoff of the Arca Cube, and although it initially worked ok, it slowly but surely became more and more difficult to use, until finally about two months ago, it just fell apart. Frustration, impossible to get repaired, so i bit the bullet and purchased a real Arca d4. What a difference !. Movements are silky smooth and solid. I can't say enough about the quality construction of this head. I'm an architectural shooter, and exacting movements are important to me. This head handles all my requirements and more. Yes, it's expensive, but worth every penny.

[Geared Head] Once you get used to the knobs, this head is very easy to adjust and use, and it is better than the Cube for field work since the gears are not exposed to the elements. You can make rough adjustments quickly and then refine all three axes independently. The camera remains centered over the tripod and it does not drift once you lock it down.

[Geared Head] I have to disagree with some said that D4 isn't worth its price, it's worth every penny. The ability to fine tune under load is remarkable, even my dedicated astro wedge isn't that smooth tilting heavily one side.
But there is some problems in the classic clamp, it's very stiff in holding the load but release the clamp takes some force, now I'll follow some advice here and soon to change it to a RRS Lever Clamp.
Happy purchase! And recommended for anyone want to precision and remarkable engineering product!

[2.915 lb] Before buying this head myself, I had a chance to play with friend's tripod. Liked the smoothness, sturdiness and quick axis unlocking. This head is relatively compact and lightweight, with two geared axes which could be quickly unlocked for major movements. It's possible to use a camera in vertical orientation even without an L-plate (by rotating the top panning base sideways), but it wouldn't be advisable for front-heavy cameras. This head is significantly smaller, cheaper and lighter than the Arca Cube, but the camera doesn't rotate close to the lense's nodal point so the Cube could be better for macro/product work.
