A: This is fine to try and lots of people do it. The quality will diminish slightly but probably not enough to notice much. Running long cables for unbalanced microphone outputs has two negative effects. 1) Loss of high frequencies 2) Increased likelihood of picking up RF interference. The longer the cable the more these negative effects become apparent. Twenty feet is about the limit before these negative effects become very noticable. The quality of the cable will be a factor, as well as proximity to other wires and electronic devices.

I have a Canon camcorder with XLR inputs, and what I use is a cable made by Hosa with a 3.5mm mini plug on one end and a pair of male XLR connectors on the other end. I can't find the model number on the Hosa site, but there other manufacturers of such cables. Search B&H or other vendor web sites for such cables. Since the SMX-30 also has a stereo mini plug, you'll also need to buy an adapter to connect two male mini plugs together (unless you can find a cable with the female mini stereo socket and pair of male XLR connectors).
