Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this be used with digital cameras?

A: The Photogenic StudioMax III 3-Light Portrait Studio Kit (120V) can be used with film and digital cameras.

Q: 2. When using this with a film camera do you need an adapter and if so what kind?

A: The Photogenic StudioMax III 3-Light Portrait Studio Kit (120V) will work with any type of camera, but it will require a sync cable or transmitter system like the Impact PowerTrigger 16 Channel AC Transmitter and Receiver Set.

Q: 3. Does the book cover the latest firmware updates for the Z8 and Z9?

A: According to the publishers, the Rocky Nook David Busch's Nikon Z9/Z8 Guide to Digital Still Photography (Softcover) the Nikon Z9 Mirrorless Camera (B&H # NIZ9) was at firmware version 4.10 and the Nikon Z8 Mirrorless Camera (B&H # NIZ8) at firmware version 1.01 when the book went to press. Since then, Nikon has issued three additional firmware updates for the Z9 and two for the Z8. Nikon offers Supplemental addendums that describe firmware changes, which is done for major updates. Readers can download these at the same time they download new firmware releases.

Q: 4. I am new to lighting set up, can I switch the bulb holders to hold flashes/sped light?

A: If your question relates to re-dedicating the stand to hole another fixture , then the answer is yes. I don't have the gear handy to measure, but tripods/stands have various stud diameters and I'd look at the Impact product specification to get the size. From there, you can see if your fixture will mate onto that stud.If you look closely at the thumb nut on the bottom of the fixture, this is the means of tightening it onto the stud.

Q: 5. If I wanted to switch out fluorescents for Tungsten bulbs, which would I use?

A: Hi Victoria, there are 3200k CFL bulbs out there. Alzo is a good brand. The large CFLs are a bit heavy for the stands, so it's wise to get the standard size bulbs. There are also some new 3000k LED E26 bulbs made by Eiko and others. I use LED bulbs and really like them.

Q: 6. I am reading in the reviews that these light are not good for "key lighting." I intend to light a green screen. What is "key lighting.?

A: The key light is simply the main light you will set your exposure to. Any light can be a key light. If the light is appropriate to the shoot is a different issue based on camera settings and size of the area. these lights can be used for a green screen if the area to light is rather small.

Q: 7. Do the lights get hot? or are they cool bulbs?

A: I would say cool . Now, I usually use gloves to unscrew, as they are slightly warm to the touch but I must say I use the gloves more to protect the bulb because I heard years ago it's better not to allow the oils from your fingers to coat these types of bulbs. Plus if I happen to apply too much pressure unscrewing, bulb will not shatter in my hand. Use of this kit has been critical in the videography business. Definitely do not regret this purchase.

Q: 8. can we use it in EU 230V?

A: This kit is only suitable for use on 110v power.

Q: 9. I'm relatively new to video and lighting, but I bought this kit about five months ago when it was up for a one day sale here on B&H. My question is, would I be able to connect a dimmer of some sort to this light and adjust the light output? I know you can do that for some lights, just not sure if that's something you can do with florescent lights and this fixture in particular. Thanks in advance.

A: Unfortunately, since the lamps of this kit are self-ballasted, standard in-line dimmers would not work and there is risk of burning out the lamp. A good way to reduce the output is with the use of a neutral density filter on the lights. The Rosco E-Colour #210 .6 ND filter, B&H# ROE210S is a safe bet and will reduce the light by 2 stops of light. Please see the image below for reference.

Q: 10. Can you use L.E.D. bulb on this kit

A: I don't see why not.

[208] If you need to quickly recall a setting, or function this is your guide. It's well laid-out, font size is not too small, hard cardboard on covers and thick stock pages make it sturdy enough to throw in your case, or backpack. Very informative illustrations and guidance throughout. If you are an avid or even occasional photographer, you will find this guide indispensable.
