If you do not want to use the LED light, you can slide the protective sleeve down, but do not click the unit into place or expose the LED light.

[LEDs] I have three of these and also give them to my friends as presents. The 5X magnification is MUCH better than the 2X or 3X magnifiers. The built in LED light is really bright. The batteries last almost for their shelf life. 5
