Compact and versatile, the Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens Blackis a 24-75mm-equivalent zoom designed for DX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras. Covering a wide-angle to portrait-length zoom range, this lens is well-suited to everyday shooting situations. Its optical design incorporates aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements, which help to reduce a variety of aberrations for sharper, clearer image quality throughout the zoom range. A Super Integrated Coating has also been applied to minimize ghosting and flare for increased contrast and color accuracy in bright and backlit conditions.

The lens's flexible focal length range is complemented by Vibration Reduction image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting. A stepping motor provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both stills and video applications. Also, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Standard zoom is designed for DX-format Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 24-75mm equivalent focal length range.

One extra-low dispersion element reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.

Four aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range for greater sharpness and accurate rendering.

Super Integrated Coating suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Stepping motor delivers impressively smooth, quiet, and fast autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting.

Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I am looking for a versatile lens that can perform for photos and videos in good and poor lighting for indoor/outdoor weddings, engagements, etc. Would this lens fulfill the job?

A: Im a nature photographer, but in my experience, the lens produces really nice images at most focal lengths. You lose some sharpness at and near 28mm and 300mm on the edges of the frame especially at wide open and fully closed apertures. Thats basically normal performance for a zoom lens. What I dont like about the lens is that the autofocus seems to search more than on the 28-300. I shoot a D7200, and it may just be my perception. For weddings, you may be just fine, but the autofocus searches too much for my tastes for animals in vegetation or birds in flight. You wont get the performance for low light that you would with an f2.8 lens of course, but you wont find a zoom lens that fast with these focal lengths either.

Q: 2. How does it compare to Sigma 18-300 which also has the same aperture range but $300 cheaper? Any experience?

A: My research suggests that the stabilization is much better on the Nikon and that most other characteristics are similar.

Q: 3. Will this work on a D5100?

A: Yes, this lens is fully compatible with the D5100 camera. It is an AF-S type lens which has the required built-in motor to autofocus with the camera.

Q: 4. is this lens compatible with the Nikon 5100?

A: Yes. The D5100 is fully compatible with AF-S and G-series NIKKOR lenses.

Q: 5. how does one update software for the VR on this lens? does it have to be on the Z50 camera itself and hooked up to the computer?

A: With Nikon cameras/lenses, you will upload the firmware update file into the memory card and run the update via the "Firmware Version" option in the menu. For more information, see these two pages for the DX Z 16-50mm lens' firmware: https://bit.ly/3fXRej0 https://bit.ly/3wKkccZ

Q: 6. Does this lens have any weather sealing?

A: The Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR is not weather sealed.

Q: 7. Does it come with a front cap?

A: Yes this lens will come with a front lens cap.

Q: 8. I see some lenes have a dedicated hood,what is that?

A: I bought the Nikon hood which was listed as an accessory for this lense. The hood was worthless. I'm shocked Nikon would even sell it. The lense is wonderful but the hood was cheap plastic which was too loose, would not stay on the lense, and eventually cracked one time when it fell off, so I trashed it. Hoods in general are designed to prevent flare - bright light sources, especially the sun, entering the lense at a sharp angle, scattering off the inner sides of the lense and reflecting specular light onto the sensor. For most photographs, that is not an issue anyway

Q: 9. Can this lens be used on the Z6 or Z7? Perhaps set to DX image area?

A: Yes, you can use this on a Z6 or Z7 but in crop mode and 40% resolution.

Q: 10. Does this lens accommodate filters?

A: Yes. The filter size is 46mm.

[7, Rounded] I had this before and traded it and that was a mistake. This is a sharp, fast AF lens.I use it mostly 24-35 and mostly street photography with Z30.I have lots of gear in my life but this is a great street and travel combo . And as always arrived on time fromm B&H who I have dealt with for 4 decades

[Nikon Z] It's got a great range. It's got VR. It's as small as it can be. And the image quality rocks. A near-perfect all-a rounder.

[APS-C] I am doing a hike thorugh Yellowstone in September. I was going to carry a heavier lens with less reach when I saw this one. It is working fine and I am very happy with it.

[0.2x] While the lens is not as fast as the 24-70mm f4 kit lens or the F2.8 24-70mm it is a great option for when you want to travel lite.

Using this on the z7 will mean you operate much like the Z50 with just 20 megapixels. But that is great when you need to pack lite.

[46 mm (Front)] Originally designed for the Z50, this lens is what anyone who orders it would expect... low weight and small size. I use it on a Z7 which automatically switches the camera to DX mode... still 19 mpx to play with! One problem though was that the VR didn't seem to work. Before returning or exchanging it however I checked for updates and sure enough the most recent update (v. 2.1) corrects this very issue and the VR now works great! Hope this helps someone who ran into the same problem. As for the lens itself, it seems clear at all settings but it is not the best choice for low light situations. But for $300, how can you go wrong?

[APS-C] This is a very light, small and great lens for traveling, discreet street photography and vlogging. It looks and works great on my Nikon Z fc. I'm traveling in Europe with it and it's just perfect for this.

[7, Rounded] Its tiny size makes this lens special. A Z 50 with the 16-50 mounted on it is about the size of a small SLR body with NO LENS WHATSOEVER (see photo). Some people are disappointed by the plastic lens mount, but Roger Cicala of lensrentals dot com has written that plastic vs metal seems to make no difference reliability-wise. That's good enough for me. Mine has good wide-open sharpness at all focal lengths. Which is nice, because THE negative of this lens is that it gets slow fast as you zoom from 16mm to 50mm. You'll be shooting it wide-open a lot.
