One mistake I made was thinking the red wing nut on the base was to lock on the monopod. It does not! When tightened it's purpose is to place the swivel ball in the full upright position making the monopod attached above locked straight. I added a 3/8" nut and washer to the base to better secure the monopod and prevent it from unscrewing from the base.
