The Steinberg UR44C USB 3.1 Audio Interface 6x4is an audio interface designed to record small ensembles anywhere with professional-grade sound quality all the while. Make use of its 32-bit converters for a wide dynamic range, and record at sample rates of up to 192 kHz for capturing detailed sonic nuances. Whether you record yourself at the home studio or want to record your record at the rehearsal space, the UR44C will come in handy, particularly if you wish to record your own band's music.

The interface offers four combo XLR-1/4" inputs, two of which can accept Hi-Z instruments, so you can record your basses and guitars direct and with fine degrees of resolution. In the back, you'll find two more line inputs, as well as four 1/4" line outputs.

Connect to your monitors via two 1/4" TRS jacks in the back of the unit, or make use of two 1/4" headphone outputs on the front panel with their own volume controls. That way, you can monitor while you engineer, and the instrumentalist can listen while recording.

The interface can communicate over a USB GEN 3.1 connection for seamless integration with Mac and Windows computers. The port is also backwards compatible for USB 2.0. Even iOS devices running iOS 10 and later are supported, so you can record straight to your iPad.

If broadcasting DJ sets, lessons, or twitch streams with high resolution is something that piques your fancy, you'll be excited for the Loopback function. This merges your recording channels with playback audio from your DAW, so you can broadcast it all at once.

Multiple effects are included, including REV-X reverb and guitar amplifier emulations. For home recording and production, Cubasis LE and Cubase AI are included, as is zero-latency monitoring matrix software called dspMixFx. The interface is powered over USB, though you can use a separately available 5V DC adapter.

[Up to 192 kHz ] The AI-1 integrated with my Mac set up seamlessly. Unlike some older devices (such as the FastTrack Pro I upgraded from), the AI-1 can be control with the Mac OS X audio controls on your keyboard. The headphone amplifier works really well and the mic/quarter inch input delivers really high quality sound for home music recordings (using Logic Pro), podcast recordings and more recently Zoom calls. I don't like desk clutter and this device is about the size of an Apple TV and connects through one cable which I run through my external monitor. One issue that the upgrade to Mac OS X Catalina fixed was that I would have to unplug and plug back in the audio interface, so my computer didn't automatically use my external monitor's audio. However, that is no longer an issue. Another small issue, that seemed to be fixed with the upgrade to Catalina, was that I would hear a very faint radio signal in my headphones, but it didn't impact my recordings at all. Finally, I have this AI-1 connected to a pair of JBL monitor speakers through the balanced line outs on the back of the unit. The audio output is incredible. If you're looking for a minimalist, high-quality USB audio interface, the AI-1 is an excellent choice. 5

[15 x 8.1 x 4.1"] I bought this as part of building a podcasting setup. Super easy to use, and very nice build quality. The pre-amp is very clean. I've got a Shure SM7B plugged into it, and regularly turn the gain all the way up with no discernible noise. 5

[Up to 192 kHz ] I was nervous about purchasing this unit because of many online reviews indicating USB connectivity issues. However, these have been resolved with a firmware update. I got a deal on 2 of these elsewhere and have been very satisfied. The headphone amp and very low-noise preamp are really great for the price. 5

[Up to 192 kHz ] Since this purchase was my first foray into digital recording, I spent time researching comparable products and the accompanying software packages. I decided on the Steinberg UR242 because of the reviews of their preamps, four separate inputs, and the price. B&H had the product in stock when other vendors did not, and they offered free next day shipping. I received the UR242 from B&H as promised. Installation of drivers and software went flawlessly, and the UR242 works as I expected. The only drawback is the learning curve to use the Cubase DAW software, but I believe that would be the same with almost any DAW. 5

[1x USB-C] This audio interface is plug-and-play, without the need to install any flaky drivers (looking at you, gen 3 Focusrite Scarlett). It has high gain, low noise, and nice fit and finish. The only thing that would make it better is an additional input or two. Would recommend! 5
