Summing up several telephotos in one convenient zoom, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm Lens f/4.5-5.6 VRfrom Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm Lens f/4.5-5.6 VRis a versatile lens covering portrait-length to super-telephoto focal lengths. Characterized by an advanced optical design, this lens uses one super extra-low dispersion element and four extra-low dispersion elements to noticeably reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to control flare and ghosting in order to increase contrast and color accuracy in bright and backlit conditions. A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, Vibration Reduction image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops.

Portrait-length to super-telephoto zoom is designed for FX-format F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 120-600mm equivalent focal length range.

One super extra-low dispersion element and four extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.

Both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by four stops to benefit shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.

Rotating tripod collar benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this lens increase in length as you zoom?

A: yes

Q: 2. Is this AF-S model the second generation of this lens?

A: In 1999 I had bought the new state of the art AF 80-400. Loved it. took to canada, Vancouver Island, and every where between there and so cal. Love it. it had a accident and I replaced it with the AF-S 80-400 model and love it even more. My understanding is there were no upgraded models between. AF-S also is a full frame lense. No issue using in medium format I do, but if you ever upgrade your camera to full frame you don't have to upgrade the lense. Hope this helped.

Q: 3. Is this lens compatible with the D300S? Also, is it made in the USA?

A: I see now reason why it would not work with the D300S

Q: 4. Can I use a Nikon Teleconverter with a D7100 & Nikkor 80-400mmf/4.5-5.6 ED VR lens?

A: Bryan:All my gear comes from B&H. I have the D7000, the Nikkor 80x400, and the Kenko Tele-Plus converter at 1.4X. The combination is just fine. Here is the deal though that I was not prepared for, (my fault for not doing enough research). They say that a 1.4x costs 1 f-stop. This is correct, but only if you are nearer the 80mm range on the zoom. When you zoom out to 400mm, it will cost you 3 f-stops. The tele. will cost you f5.6 vs. f4 on the low end and likely f8 vs. f5.6 on the high end. This is assuming a 1.4x converter. Multiply that if you want to go 1.7x. It other words, I shoot birds and they move, and they hide in dark places. This makes the tele. a bit tough at 400mm due to the loss of 3 f-stops. I have to shoot too slowly to freeze them. For most other applications though, you should love it. I do. If you have the light and it doesn't move too much, this is a sweet combo.Best,Ray Swagerty- Charleston, SC

Q: 5. How long have they been producing this lens?

A: The Nikon AF-S 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G VR lens was released in 2013.

Q: 6. Where is this lens manufactured?

A: This lens is made in Japan.

Q: 7. Hi, camera is a D-810 with the VR 80-400mm f4.5-f5.6 D ED AF and can I use the TC 17 E II teleconverter?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens and the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II may be used with one another. However, do note that autofocus will not be possible when using this combination. When you use the 1.7x teleconverter on the 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens, it will become the approximate equivalent of a 136-680mm f/7.3-9.5 lens. According to the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens' instruction manual, the lens will not autofocus with this combination, even on cameras that support f/8 autofocus such as the Nikon D810 DSLR camera. As such, you would have to focus the lens manually.

Q: 8. what is refurnished condition. is it refurnished by Nikon?

A: Refurbished lenses come from Nikon. Nikon refurbs are either demonstration lenses used at trade shows and retail locations or customer returns. They examine them, do any repairs or cleaning as necessary, classify them as manufacturer's refurbished product and resell them to retailers to be sold as just that. They do not have Nikon's 1 year warranty. At B&H refurbs are covered by a 90 B&H warranty, just like most of the used photo gear.

Q: 9. Does this product have a US warranty?

A: Yes, this Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens would come with a 1 year USA manufacturers warranty.

Q: 10. Is this lens compatible with Nikon D7000?

A: Yes. It's FX format lens so it will work with any Nikon body FX or DX. Because of crop factor, on your D7000, it will be the equivalent of a 160-600. I's a great lens.

[9, Rounded] This lens is absolutely amazing. Tack sharp in all ranges. Auto focus and VR system is very fast and keeps up with rapid fire even with 1.4x teleconverter iii attatched.

[0.2x] As of yet I have not taken a lot of images but what I have taken I find the focus very quiet and fast. The shots that I have taken are very sharp. Even though the lens is heavy I found it easy to use and easy to hand hold using the tripod mount. I have also used it on a monopod and again very easy to point and shot.

[77 mm (Front)] Got this lens because I needed the reach for my girls equestrian competitions and it has been a godsend. I was used to my 70-200 for so long that I was afraid of trying something different, but after taking the plunge I can say I am very happy. My pics have been sharp and in focus. No complaints.

[Nikon F] Bought just as it came out in 2013 for a Tanzania safari - yes, was more than I was eager to spend but when considering cost of trips - vs either Sigma and Tokina - didnt make sense - would I do another Africa photo safari? BUT Couldnt have been more pleased with choice after returning with beautiful images where I was able to shoot at low end (80mm) of wildlife close in as well as further out. Subsequent travel continues to yield excellent results. Have always been knocked out by results with this piece of kit. Could an extra 100mm on long end sometimes be valuable; yes - but on balance think this option is more successful all around - for me. Recently looked at the 200-500 to potentially sell this and swap but when handled the 200-500 size/weight determined that as an advanced amateur travelling with this and other equipt would literally be too much. If I just was shooting on day trips or didnt need to carry a backpack - might come to a different decision. Did I mention I like what is having a usable if not optimal walk around lens (weight - size of 80-400 is not that difficult). Anyhow - sometimes more costs more - we're Nikon shooters right?? Consider your use case carefully for this purchase....

[Autofocus] Ive shot lots of wildlife with great results.  But, on a photo tour last year, I shot a portrait from the middle of the Ganges River to a figure up the stairs at a riverside ghat.  Nobody in my group had a quality shot with this lens!  Only slightly heavier than a 70-200 but worth it to not have to mess with converters and get the shot!

[77 mm (Front)] I am a wildlife photographer and am into field handling performance, not technical details. Paired with my Nikon D5 and D850 camera bodies, this lens is light enough for me to handhold for extended periods allowing me tremendous flexibility for capturing birds in flight (BIF). It focuses quickly and the images are superb. The attached photo is of a wood stork which flew directly overhead at sunset. I would have been unable to get shots like this with my heavier 500mm lens mounted on a tripod. I attained many other great dynamic shots of BIF on my recent first photo trip using this lens.

[Full-Frame] This is the lens that I use most often. It is excellent for wildlife and is fast to deploy for birds that pose briefly. It is also excellent for achieving and maintaining focus on flying birds. At 80-100mm the lens captures scenic views beautifully.

[80 to 400mm] have not had much opportunity to use yet but am looking forward to the versatility.  it was a bit stiff attaching to my d500 but seemed to be ok.  focus seems to be pretty fast.

[9, Rounded] Nice range, fast for the price. When COVID ends I'll be able to get more and better shots.

[Full-Frame] I was searching for a lens to cover a soccer field from goal to goal. I tried to make due with a 70-200 with a 2x converter and was short or to close at the ends of the field. Results were almost ok but the converter really slowed down the focusing. Purchased the 80-400 and took it to a lake to try it out. Results were excellent. Amazed at the focus speed and the amount of ground this zoom can cover. This is the outdoor action lens I was looking for. The zoom is a little stiff but at this price point that is to be expected. Can't wait for soccer season to start up again.
