In addition to being a great desktop computer, the Mac mini powers everything from home automation to giant render farms. And now, with an 8th Generation 3.6 GHz Intel Core i3 Quad-Core processor and Intel UHD Graphics 630, the Mac mini has even more computing power for industrial-grade tasks. So, whether you're running a live concert sound engine or testing your latest iOS app, the Mac mini is the shortest distance between a great idea and a great result.

The Mac mini features 8GB of high-performance 2666 MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM memory for faster rendering, working with massive files, or running multiple virtual machines. And now you can configure even more memory - up to 64GB - to run even heavier workloads.

This Mac mini has a 256GB PCIe SSD with sequential read speeds of up to 3.4 GB/s, so you can load giant files and launch apps quickly.

The Mac mini features the Apple T2 Security Chip, a second-generation custom Mac silicon designed by Apple to make the Mac mini even more secure. The T2 Security Chip consolidates several controllers into one, and includes a Secure Enclave co-processor that provides the foundation for encrypted storage and secure boot capabilities.

The Mac mini is optimized for performance across the board, with programs including Xcode, WebKit Compile, Adobe Photoshop CC, Pixelmator Pro, Luxion KeyShot, Autodesk Maya, Compressor, Final Cut Pro X, Logic Pro X, MainStage, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and more.

With a variety of ports, the Mac mini is ready for a variety of workflow configurations. Thunderbolt 3 is powerful and versatile, and the Mac mini has four of them. The HDMI 2.0 port delivers more bandwidth than its predecessor, so you can enjoy faster frame rates. For wired network access, take advantage of the integrated Gigabit Ethernet port.

Thunderbolt 3 gives you some productive possibilities. Transfer data at up to 40 Gb/s, charge and power external devices, connect up to two 4K displays—and even a third with HDMI 2.0—or one 5K display. Or, pair your Mac mini with an eGPU for desktop-class graphics performance.

Because of its size, performance, and wide array of ports, the Mac mini goes where no Mac has gone before. And now, with even more cores packed into its 7.7" square frame, you never know where you'll find a Mac mini—or dozens of them—hard at work.

Build and Render Farms
The faster 2666 MHz DDR4 memory in the Mac mini is ideal for batching out massive Xcode builds or rendering and compressing video.

A: It definitely works well, this is an extremely powerful device.

Q: 5. I am a heavy user of the Premiere Pro CC (current) family of applications. Can anyone give me some idea about how much faster a given timeline might render using this top-of-the-line Mac Pro compared to doing the same thing on a 32GB, 4GHz 4-core iMac 5K also with a 1TB SSD? Comments would be gratefully received. Thank you in advance - Pete

A: If premiere can take advantage of 12 core vs 4 then its worth it. for me time is money, if your editing daily then the 12 or 8 with D700 Graphics card with 32-64mem is the route to go . other wise I would of gone with the 5k iMac loaded.

[1] After running Lightroom and Photoshop on a MacBook Pro for about 5 years, I finally broke down and bought the Mac Pro. I did not realize how much time I had been wasting, twiddling my thumbs while the old MacBook churned away processing images. The Mac Pro is very fast and quiet and has a nice assortment of ports. After purchasing a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter, I was able to quickly mount two daisy chained external Firewire drives along with a USB3 drive and a new Thunderbolt backup drive. It is also nice to have the 1TB internal flash drive for software and temporary storage. It took me a while to figure out that I needed a new, Thunderbolt to Display Port cable to connect the Mac Pro to my 27 inch NEC monitor. Once I got the NEC cable and a keyboard, I was quickly up and running with a monitor resolution of 2560 x 1440 (no adaptor required). Although the Mac Pro does not have an optical drive, I learned that it can share the drive on my MacBook Pro using WiFi or an ethernet cable. I was able to use this approach to install some software that I have on CDs. Overall, I am very happy with the Mac Pro. It may be the last computer that I ever buy.

[1] I'd been dragging my feet about upgrading from an 09' Mac Pro 8core machine but decided with 4K coming that I needed to make the upgrade. My renders are taking place in 1/2 the time as before and it just sits at idle. Amazing speed in such a small, quiet package. No regrets or buyer's remorse. Apple is still king of the hill for video editing & photography, so question...

[1] Very fast and as quiet as my G4 Cube (which has no fan). My biggest apprehension was the noise from the fan and COMPLETELY unfounded!

[5.0] Having owned an 8 core Mac Pro since 2008, I had some reservations about the new design. I had visions of endless cables and peripherals that would clutter my precious desk space. With a little thought and reorganization, this hasn't proved to be a problem. For my primary interest, which is photography, the new 6 core Mac Pro is much faster than the old one. It is also much quieter. I chose the 1 TB drive and I added 64 GB of RAM. I also chose the faster clock speed of the 6 core (compared to the slower 8 and 12 core). This makes sense because PhotoShop doesn't use more than 6 cores anyway. The only problem I have run into is obtaining full screen resolution when connecting my NEC PA271W monitor to a Thunderbolt port. Using the Apple Dual DVI to Thunderbolt adaptor, there is a throttling of the signal so that screen resolution cannot exceed 1920x1080. After several hours of talking to Apple technicians and finally to NEC support, I discovered that the only way around this is to use a Display port to Mini-display port cable which enables full resolution to be displayed. Now I have access to the full potential of this elegant and amazingly fast computer.

[256 GB] This computer is everything I want in a computer. Small, quiet, fast, round and powerful. My only complaints are that the cable area is a little tight and the power button is a little hard to find. Other than that it's perfect.

[5.0] I've only just begun to get used to the new rig so this write up will serve more as a commentary at this point, but I expect the transition will be smooth and am now convinced that it was the perfect time for an upgrade. It's pricey (what Apple product isn't?), but well worth the expense if you are already working with Mac hardware. I purchased this Mac Pro as an upgrade for a early 2009. While still a trusty workhorse, it is getting a bit long in the tooth, and really isn't suitable for 4K, which for us, is just over the horizon. The mix of features it provides are ideal a solid GPU, plenty of memory with room to upgrade, high-performance expansion capability (Thunderbolt 2, USB3.0, HDMI 1.4) and compact size. My home is my studio, so freeing up physical workspace is a must, as my gear load is certainly not getting any smaller. I have to comment on the design it really does look like a goofy little trashcan (albeit lovingly crafted), or some sort of droid reject from star wars: it's certainly hefty enough. Cute though: it's tiny compared to the 2009! It's really startling when you have them sitting side by side in the studio. The performance, as expected, is excellent thanks to the modern processors, GPU and the SSD. There is not much in the way of local storage space, but it's more than adequate for OS X and applications. Anyone working with video on a regular basis isn't going to waste time with internal storage anyhow - external expansion is a must. Instead of choosing PCIe Expansion chassis I bought a $699 highpoint rocketstor6328 thunderbolt2 raid adapter which allow me to connect g-speed minisas configured with RAID 6, hp LTO6 drives and even my esata drives. It's a owesome Thunderbolt2 RAID Adapter so basically any devices with minisas or eSATA you can simply make them accessible to the new Macpro! I'm quite satisfied that my money was well spent at this moment. For anybody with an older Mac Pro, now is a good time to take the plunge.
