A staple of wide-angle versatility, the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Lens UV Filter Kitfrom Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Lens UV Filter Kitis an L-mount wide zoom featuring an f/4 constant maximum aperture. An optimized optical design incorporates a series of aspherical, low dispersion, and high refractive index elements, to control a variety of aberrations, color fringing, and distortion for sharp, clear, well-corrected imagery throughout the zoom range. Complementing the optics is a unique double-magnet linear motor focus system, which provides high-speed response and power while remaining compact in size. The lens also sports a rounded nine-blade diaphragm, which contributes to the quality of bokeh, and a weather-sealed construction to suit working in a variety of weather conditions.

Wide-angle zoom is designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 24-52.5mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.

Three aspherical elements and one ultra-high refractive index element help to minimize distortions and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.

One extra-low dispersion element greatly reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to produce a high degree of clarity and color accuracy.

The autofocus focus system employs both a double-magnet linear motor to deliver impressively fast and precise focusing performance while remaining compact. A focus clutch mechanism has also been incorporated, which allows for near-instant AF/MF switching.

Splash, dust, and freezeproof design benefits working in inclement weather conditions down to -14°F.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there a tripod mount for this lens? How to support this on a tripod to relieve the stress of its weight on the camera lens mount? Just letting it hang off the camera, with only the camera body attached to the tripod would seem to weaken the lens mount, especially over time.

A: There is currently no lens support available for the Panasonic Lumix S Pro 50mm f/1.4 lens. While the concern is understandable, there have been no recent reports of such issues happening and such an occurrence is not common today due to more robust mount-engineering practices.

Q: 2. What is the primary difference between this and the "non-pro" lenses. Is the glass the same, but different ring controls?

A: The Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Lens would be the only 16-35mm lens designed for the Leica L-mount lens mount. The closest lens options to the above lens would be the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for Leica L, B&H # SI142428L, or the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L, B&H # SI185028DCLM. The main difference between the above lens is the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for Leica L would be wider and would be twice as bright as it has a constant f/2.8 aperture. Both the Panasonic and Sigma lens are considered professional lenses from the respective manufacturers. The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Leica L would be a more economically-priced lens. It has a brighter aperture with a constant f/2.8 aperture and it has a longer optical zoom range, but the optical image quality would not quite be on par as the image quality from the professional lens options listed above. Build quality and optical performance would be main differences between "professional" lenses and standard or entry-level lenses.

Q: 3. Does this lens have a static rear lens element at the mount for better weather sealing?

A: No, the rear element of the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Lens retracts inside the lens barrel, therefore we recomend keeping the rear cap on if the lens is not mounted on the camera.

Q: 4. Does the lens length change when zooming or focusing?

A: This is going to be very high quality serious amateur professional lens. We suspect that along with the advertised minimal breathing there will be minimal, if any, lens length change.

Q: 5. Will the OIS work on the Leica CL?

A: Yes, as stated previously with the latest firmware.

Q: 6. Is this fully compatible with the DJI RS2 Gimbal?

A: The DJI RS 2 Gimbal Stabilizer can work with most lenses. The support weight is part of the concern. The Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Lens is around 1.1 lbs and the gimbal can support up to 10 lbs. It will work but note, that when you zoom the lens you will need to balance the gimbal each time. Most use prime lenses when using a gimbal or do not zoom the lens.

Q: 7. Will this lens work with the new Phase Detection AF of the S5 ii Lumix camera?

A: Yes Panasonic Lumix S PRO 70-200mm f/4 O.I.S. Lens is compatible with phase detection autofocus in the new Panasonic S5II.

Q: 8. I have the Lumix S 18mm and 35mm f1.8 Prime lenses. Would I be happy replacing both of them with this f4 lens?

A: The Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 Lens will allow you to easily zoom, so you won't have to switch lenses but the aperture is narrower at f/4. So it depends if you need the better quality in low light of those 1.8 lenses or f/4 is enough for your needs. If you take many photos in low light situations than you might want to stick with the lenses that you have.

Q: 9. How is it about noise in video in AF-C? Is it without any nise, quiet as f.e. P 24-105/4-it means NO noise in video? Because I bought sigma 50 1.4art l-mount and it was bad idea -audible in every my video with AF-C:-(,thanks a lot!....(panasonic S1H)

A: It should be as good as the 24-105 lens

Q: 10. Does this lens work on leica SL? Someone say after few weeks this lens turn default to MF in leica SL, CL.

A: With a firmware update, this lens should work perfectly on the SL. Just make sure the manual focus clutch is not enabled if you want to use autofocus.

[Full-Frame] Simply put the Lumix 16-35mm is an outstanding lens!

I currently own Leica’s M 21mm SEM which is a gem. I’ve also owned the Leica SL 16-35mm which I eventually sold as I found it to be too big and heavy.

I also found that Leica’s SL 16-35 image quality doesn’t quite live up to all the hype, particularly when one factors in its exorbitant cost.

The Lumix handily holds its own in the above mentioned company. It’s well built and yet it’s light with excellent handling. It balances beautifully on an Leica SL2. The image quality, colours and corner to corner resolution are all excellent.

If one is looking for a wide angle lens that strikes the optimum balance between performance, cost and ease of use, the Lumix 16-35mm F4 L mount is in a class by itself.

[77 mm (Front)] Probably the best lens I’ve ever purchased. Incredible image quality. Immaculate construction. Perfect focal length. Smooth zoom and focus rings. It’s just perfect.

[77 mm (Front)] Stupid Great....meaning 99% flawless. Regardless of cost, this lens when tested properly ( along with other 3 S Pro Lenses I now own 4 total ) probably will shake up the market. What a great idea.... make a set of lenses that match each other in every respect and still keep up with future super high megapixel sensors. Could not be more appreciative to team that conceived and executed the camera and lens system.

[L-Mount] Loved the images from this lens. Super sharp and contrasty with minimal need for editing. Build quality is superb. Fantastic b/w, L.Monochrome with this lens is better than I can achieve in post. Nevertheless, I sold this for the 50 f1.8 because it's too heavy for me as I shoot handheld.

[L-Mount] The Lumix S Pro 16-35 f/4 lens matches up well with the Leica SL2. The color and detail on images are great. It's size and weight make easy to travel with.

[Full-Frame] I've got nothing but good things to say about this lens. The image quality is just so good, even wide open. Sure, there is some barrel distortion on the shorter focal lengths but no more than I would expect from a wide angle zoom. I comfortably carried this lens around NYC for several days attached to my s5ii and was very pleased with the ergonomics. It has been out in rough outdoor conditions including very cold and dusty locations. It has held up well - it just feels solid. I would buy it again.

[16 to 35mm] I'm a Leica SL2-S and SL user. I have some Leica SL lenses but buying all of them is prohibitively expensive even for a high income owner. Another aspect is size - my Leica SL 24-90 is HUGE. Most all the SL lenses are, with the weight to match. I love ultra wides, but when I looked at the Leica 16-35, it was not a great prospect to envision carrying both the 24-90 and 16-35. Soooo, I looked at alternatives (Sigma 16-24 f/2.8 and the Panasonic 16-35 f.4.0). After holding both, it was clear the Panasonic was smaller, lighter, and handled better in my opinion. It also allows filters with no gymnastics, and is certified by Leica. I thought that was a marketing plot, but what I THINK it actually brings is similar optical performance and rendering to the Leica lenses. The resolution is excellent into the corners (especially at f/5.6 and smaller) and the colors are very much like what i get out of the 24-90 or 35mm SL lenses. The weight is significantly less than the Leica or Sigma and focussing speed is blazing fast. Overall IQ is great, the lens is sealed, and I feel comfortable carrying it with the 24-90 as my kit for travel. Love it and highly recommend it if you are looking for something less bulky compared to the SL lenses, much cheaper, and with similarly excellent performance.

[0.23x] This 50 is probably the best 50 out there as far as toughness and quality with great images quality for photos and video. I feel it's worth the price.
It is by far a heavy lens . But still worth what you're are getting..

[f/4] This lens exceeded my expectations. Paired with my S1R the sharpness, image quality and color rendition is simply stunning. I have used other 16 to 35 lenses none of which were even close to this lens. I have not been disappointed by any of the Lumix products and that trend continues with his lens. Highly recommended.

[Autofocus] The reviews on the lens before I bought it were a mixed bag - some raved about it, a few panned it. I looked at the Sigma and the Leica and both had their own issues. The Sigma is an excellent lens, but i dislike the bulbous front element and it's heavier. The Leica (I am using a Leica SL2) is certainly excellent, predictably very expensive, and extremely well made, but I just couldn't get past the weight/size and of course the cost. The Panasonic is similarly well made (if a bit more plasticky), sealed, lighter and smaller. So I took the plunge on it and it does not disappoint. Colors have pop, contrast is good, and autofocus is very fast on the SL2. Love the focussing ring when i want to focus on my own, and the handling is excellent. A tad of vignetting on the wide end which is not distracting at all and is easily removable in post processing if you desire, and is gone by 5.6 in my experience. Constant f4 is not fast, but for an ultra-wide it's good enough. If your body has IBIS (meaning you're not using an original SL but one of the later bodies from Pany or Leica), it's hand-holdable down to very slow shutter speeds. I don't see any fringing in my pictures, or anything else that detracts from its performance. I don't like the overused word sharpness but this lens indeed resolves very well at all focal lengths. I would absolutely buy this lens again and have no hesitation recommending this over the Leica re: price if you are worried about that comparison. This is truly a pro-grade lens at a decent price point. B&H was the usual on this purchase - fast delivery, great service, easy website to navigate.
