This 2 to 5-stop, 82mm Freewell Standard Day Variable ND Filter 82mm 2-5 Stopis designed to mount onto lenses with 82mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 2 to 5-stops. Its 0.6 to 1.5 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally possible. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field or add motion blur. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is visually demarcated with numbers representing the different stop values and features side knurlings to further enable fast and precise positioning.

This filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for enhanced clarity and color fidelity. Each glass surface is multi-coated to help eliminate internal ghosting and reflections. The Freewell 82mm Standard Day Variable Neutral Density 0.6 to 1.5 Filter is also coated for resistance to oil, dust, and scratches, offering greater protection to the filter and helping it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The coatings are hydrophobic as well, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to apply differing amounts of density from scene to scene.

0.6 to 1.5 neutral density filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally possible.

Providing a reduction of 2 to 5 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Offers increased flexibility to use specific ISO settings or ISO films under bright ambient light.

Provides increased exposure flexibility while using cinema or video cameras within a designated film frame rate.

Constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity.

Multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections

Coated for oil, static, dirt, as well as scratch resistance and provides an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning.

Aluminum alloy filter ring assembly for durability while remaining lightweight.

Side knurlings along the front filter ring allow the filter glass to be easily rotated.

Front filter ring is visually demarcated with numbers to help ensure that its rotation corresponds to the filter's exposure reduction range.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If I buy a 95 mm filter, will it work with a 58mm and 72 mm lens if I use Step up rings?

A: Yes, if you buy a 95 mm filter, it will work with a 58 and 72 mm lens if you use step up rings but remember that with the step up rings you can't attach the lens hood.

Q: 2. Is this VND "clear" or "off" before turning to position 2 or higher?

A: No. There is no way to turn it "off". The minimum filter factor / density would be 0.6 / 2-stops and 1.8 / 6-stops.

Q: 3. Does it have a front thread as well? if so, what size?

A: It does not have a front thread and cannot be stacked.

Q: 4. The 2-5 or 5-9 On a sony 18-105 g lens? Mostly for video and some photos

A: Which option you choose would depend on the ambient lighting conditions you plan to be in and your camera's metered exposure. The range between your metered aperture and your required working aperture would determine which would work best for your shooting environment. That being said, if you are not sure which to start with, I would recommend the 2 to 5 stop variable neutral density filter for your usage needs. Do note that this filter may be returned within 30 days of purchase date for a refund or exchange, so if it happens to not be strong enough for you, you have 30 days from the purchase date to return the filter for an exchange or refund.

Q: 5. Does these have 82mm threads on the front to attach a lens hood?

A: I'm sorry, no.

Q: 6. Does the kit come with a magnetic base ring 82mm?

A: No, the Freewell All-Day VND 2-5 and 6-9 stop 2-filter kit does not come with a magnetic filter ring.

Q: 7. Are these stackable?

A: According to Freewell it is not recommended to stack these as it and cause vignetting. Technically speaking it is possible, not recommended.

Q: 8. Is it compatible as screw on filter fir smallrig mini matte box?

A: The SmallRig Mini Matte Box includes an 82mm adapter so it can accept the 82mm Freewell Mist Edition Threaded Bright Day Variable ND Filter.

Q: 9. Does the ring "snap" to each stop?

A: The Freewell 67mm Standard Day Variable Neutral Density 0.6 to 1.5 Filter (2 to 5-Stop) does not "snap" to each stop

Q: 10. What is the weight in grams of the filter itself (without magnetic lens cover)?

A: The Freewell 82mm All-day Variable ND filter weighs 71 g without the lens cap.

[Glass] The build quality on these filters is excellent. There is almost no wiggle in the rings when at either end of the adjustment range, and the rotating action is very smooth. A little hard to tell from the photos, but the filters are VERY thin. The magnetic lens caps are a nice touch, and sit quite firmly. I'm not at all worried about knocking them off, carrying between shots, in and out of vehicles, etc.

When tightened onto the filter ring of my lens, the numbered markings line up roughly with the top and bottom of the lens, which is handy... but bear in mind, the numbers do not seem to correlate with true stops, for exposure purposes. They act only as a fairly arbitrary frame of reference.

In terms of color, there is a bit of a shift as you move through the stops. This is present in all variable ND's to a certain extent, but I can say these are some of the best I've used in this price range. There is a slight green shift on both, and on my set, it seems to be most apparent in the 2-5 stop filter, shifting somewhat warm as you increase the density. Something to keep in mind if you need to change density mid-shot, which could potentially complicate a color grade in post.

There is very little loss in sharpness. Cheaper alternatives will often turn your image kind of muddy, but these seem to hold up pretty well.

Lastly, I know these are not the cheapest on the market, but it's nice to see they have included decent hard cases (fairly compact and portable, I might add), along with some very smartly designed magnetic lens caps. Not an issue if you have a system for other filters when you're on the go, but just as they come, I'm not worried at all about protecting the filters when they are on or off of the lens.

[Glass] I bought this to experiment taking outdoor portraits with OCF without using the HSS feature on my Godox strobes. HSS uses a lot of power from the battery, so avoiding that issue was important to me. The Freewell VND filter has been well received. I didn't want to invest too deeply, so this product fit my budget. I bought the 77mm size because that is the largest size I would need. I have another lens with just a 72mm filter size, so I'll get a step-up ring for that. The filter seems well made and I like the hard stops for the different densities. The magnetic lens cap is working fine so far, although others have concerns about how long it will hold over time. I do not have mirrorless cameras, so I'll have to work with live view. My concern is focus accuracy when using wider apertures. Worst case is to have to set the focus with the filter set to its weakest effect, and then close it down prior to the actual exposure. My only negative about this filter is the absence of front filter threads. I would prefer to be able to use the lens hood. The lenses feel naked to me without one. Other than that, I feel that the Freewell product is a good balance between quality, value and price. I might add that I bought the standard vs the mist version. If I want a slightly softer image, I can add it later in post if desired.
