The 4 x 4' line of Matthews Bottom Hinge Floppy 40x40"silks, scrims, and flags have always been a popular item but just a tad large for travel—hence the birth of the 40 x 40" Bottom Hinge Floppy. The larger 48 x 48" size requires a van or grip truck for traveling, whereas shaving 8" on all sides makes it more manageable in tight spaces and allows it to fit in nearly all "wagons" or SUVs.

Simply undo the touch fasteners at the corners, and the Bottom Hinge Floppy "flops" open to become a large 40 x 80" black flag capable of blocking light from large areas you don't want to illuminate. Structurally, the Bottom Hinge Floppy is impressive. The frame is hollow steel tubing to cut down on weight, while the solid steel mounting rod can stand up to years of heavy use.

[5.8 lb] Our productions have worked with the standard 48 floppies forever, and the hassle of transporting them is something we just lived with without much thought. Once we found the 40 options we grabbed some just cuz they seemed neat, and man, what an improvement! Sure, it's just a small thing, but being able to slide these into cars with ease and wheel them on standard sized carts makes the least-fun parts of the job (load-in/out) a little bit nicer. I prefer to spend a few more dollars up front and never have to think about that purchase again - than skimp and be left with an inferior product that I'm counting down the days to replace. [5.8 lb] Considered getting the scrim jim floppy cutter fabric as it makes a 4’x4’, however eventually settled on the Matthews floppy cutter (40”x40”) as it easily mounts into a standard grip head and is lighter. I usually use these outdoors and overhead so they are mounted high and horizontally over the talent.
