This Silver Edition of the lens features a striking silver finish with contrasting black accents to match perfectly with other Silver Edition lenses and cameras. One of the most versatile zoom ranges, this 70-200mm lens provides a 105-300mm equivalent focal length range when used with Pentax APS-C DSLRs.

A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture delivers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and is particularly beneficial to creating shallow depth of field imagery.

Extra-low dispersion glass elements are incorporated within the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and produce high image clarity with edge-to-edge sharpness.

High Definition (HD) and Aero Bright coatings have been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting in order to deliver greater contrast and color fidelity. Additionally, a Super Protect (SP) coating also helps to protect the surface of exposed elements from fingerprints, water, dust, and oils and also makes the front and rear elements easier to clean.

A Direct Current (DC) autofocus motor benefits from an internal focusing design and delivers fast, smooth, and quiet focusing performance.

The Quick-Shift Focus System allows you to first use autofocus to acquire general focus on a subject, then instantly refine your focus position manually without the need for an AF/MF selector.

A focus range limiter allows you to constrain the lens' focus range between different sets of distances for faster performance and greater responsiveness.

The weather-resistant construction utilizes 13 distinct seals to prevent moisture or dust from entering the lens.

A removable, rotating tripod collar is included with the lens for better balance when shooting atop a tripod.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you put a filter over the front objective lens? It looks like it sticks out a little past the housing...

A: Yes the Pentax HD PENTAX-D FA* 85mm f/1.4 ED SDM AW Lens can use any 82mm filter.

Q: 2. I really love my K3 and do pet photography with it. I need a good zoom that's quick on AF. The Pentax smc PENTAX-DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 ED (IF) SDM Lens just doesn't autofocus quickly enough. The web page for this new Pentax 70-200 says The Quick-Shift Focus System allows you to first use autofocus to acquire general focus on a subject, then instantly refine your focus position manually without the need for an AF/MF selector. Is this Pentax again not being able to pinpoint focus the way Canon, Nikon, Tamron and Sigma seem capable of, or do we have a genuine capability here for instant lock on moving objects equivalent to say the Tamron 70-200?

A: The new 70-200 is a fast lens but so is the 50-135mm lens. Both are f/2.8 which helps the focus speed. But the cameras focus system does have a very large part to how fast and accurate it can focus.Just to compare the K-3 has 27 Phase Detection autofocus points and the Nikon D7200 has 51 Phase Detection points and 15 cross-type focus points. So in most cases the Nikon Model will focus faster and more accurate.

Q: 3. How long does it extend at 1:1 magnification?

A: The lens almost doubles it's length when focuse at 1:1 magnification. The extension is almost as long as the length of the included lens hood.

Q: 4. Does this need an adapter to use on an APS-C?

A: The Pentax HD Pentax-D FA Macro 100mm f/2.8 ED AW (Black) can be used on both full frame and APS-C frame sensors directly.

Q: 5. Under listed specs, only ASP-C is the compatible format. I thought FA lenses were native 35mm format. Is the information posted re compatibility accurate?

A: Yes, the Pentax HD PENTAX D FA* 70-200mm f/2.8 ED DC AW Lens would be compatible for use with full-frame cameras. As the lens was released in 2015 and Pentax's full-frame camera was not announced until 2016 (all previous DSLR cameras being APS-C cameras), our website did not indicate which Pentax lenses were full-frame compatible. It is listed under the Product Highlights on the lens' webpage, and our website will be updated soon listing which Pentax K-mount lenses would also offer full-frame coverage.

Q: 6. Why does this lens have a M/A focus switch when the K-1 and K-1 II have already have that feature?Does this mean this lens is actually made by another manufacturer?

A: Pentax HD PENTAX-D FA* 85mm f/1.4 ED SDM AW Lens is made by Pentax in their Vietnam's manufacture. Many Pentax Proffessional full frame DSLR lenses has their own M/A switch to turned ON/OFF the lens build in focus motor.

Q: 7. What is the length of the tripod collar?

A: Almost 4 inches (almost 10 cm) long and hangs down 1.75 (4.5 cm) inches from the lens.

Q: 8. Does this lens work with a Novoflex Pentax K to Sony E body adapter? Does it have the aperture mecanism of other Pentax K ?

A: The Pentax HD PENTAX-D FA 21mm f/2.4ED Limited DC WR Lens can be used on a Sony E-mount camera with the Novoflex Adapter for Pentax K Lens to Sony NEX Camera, BH #NOAPKSNEX. However, the lens will not autofocus, and the aperture has to be set with the aperture ring on the adapter. The Monster Adapter LA-KE1 Magic Ring Pentax K Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Adapter, BH #MOPKSEA, supports autofocus and camera-to-lens communication.

Q: 9. Has it been confirmed with Pentax that this features an in-lens DC autofocus motor? I have not seen this reported anywhere else.

A: The manufacture says the Pentax HD Pentax-D FA Macro 100mm f/2.8 ED AW uses the Body -AF.

Q: 10. Is the silver part of the lens on the silver version made out of metal or it is plastic coated with silver layer?

A: The Pentax HD PENTAX-D FA* 70-200mm f/2.8 ED DC AW Silver Edition Lens is manufactured from a machined aluminum barrel and has a finely textured finish. The silver finish is simply painted aluminum metal.

[f/22] So far I've used this lens for sports action photography, and I plan to use it for a few portraits down the road. Although I paid a hefty sum for a hefty lens, I'm glad it has features the 70-200mm f/2.8 Tamron does not: weather sealing, internal zooming (no telescoping action), and DC motor for faster focusing -- a must for fast-action burst shooting. I also read about sharpness issues with the Tamron. It's significantly less expensive, and a bit lighter/smaller, but you get what you pay for, I guess. This Pentax lens produces extremely sharp photos, even at f/2.8. Like others have said, it's built like a tank, but it can be hand-held. Built to last and get the job done in any conditions.

[Full-Frame] I had a chance to shoot few hundred pictures with D-FA* 70-200 on my K5-II this weekend. I am truly impressed. The lens is very sharp wide open, and autofocus is very accurate. Color reproduction, out of focus areas - everything is beyond my expectations. Honestly, I've not seen such image quality from any Pentax zoom (and even many of the primes) ever. The build quality is very high, nothing to complain about. I really like that the tripod support is double-purposed as a carrying handle, it's very convenient. The only thing I'm not quite happy with is the weight. The lens is really heavy, I'd recommend using a monopod with it.

[f/2.8] Perfect lens scale for more accurate photo trip, enough from far shooting to average focus, light and precise. What a nice finishing and high quality materials! So happy!

[f/2.8] Very nice lens. Heavy beast but amazingly nice bokeh. I only used a hand full times but will continue to support Pentax lenses. weather resistance is definitely a nice touch. I have done a few shots in a water park where my daughter had her 5th birthday where this feature came in very handy. Furthermore, living in SIngapore where high (80%) humidity is standard WR offers additional protection. I also like to use it for distant portrait shots as especially younger kids dont realize that they are being photographed and hence stop making funny faces/poses. Paparazzi-Dady :-)

[f/2.8] I bought this for use on the K-1 and love it. Image quality is excellent from corner to corner up and down the zoom range (even at 200 and wide open), focus is silent and quick, it's a pleasure to use, and built like a tank--this thing will survive the zombie apocalypse. And that's really the only downside: this is not a lens you just casually throw in your bag or carry around. No question, it's the best Pentax zoom I've owned, and my second favorite portrait lens behind the 77 Limited. Though this lens doesn't have the vignetting or purple fringing of the 77 and is certainly technically better, I still think I slightly prefer the tones, bokeh, and 'character' of the 77 (though that could be just because I'm used to it). While that lens will still have a place in my bag, no doubt, the flexibility of this beast really goes a long way and the image quality is absolutely first rate. Highly recommend to anyone thinking about it--it's a good addition.

[Full-Frame] I am an outdoorsman living on a farm in NE Ohio. I need camera gear that stands up to the elements. Snow, rain, stormy weather, and sudden drenching dew while bouncing around in an aluminum walleye boat at night is regular photography for me. I am up to my elbows in Canon gear, but the Pentax K-1 and this lens give me great peace of mind as far as being able to hold up well to the wet. This lens gives outstanding image quality that I did not expect. I have lots of Canon L lenses with which to compare it. In my eyes, the IQ is right on top with the best of them. With internal focus and internal zoom this lens should and has proved itself to me as an all weather lens I can count on.

[f/2.8] I have only had this lens for 1 week so far, and I used it to snap around 200 photos this past Sunday for a St. Patrick's Day Parade in my neighborhood. I must say it is a beast to hold handheld for a few hours, and a good sling strap is recommended but it seemed extremely sharp to me from 70mm to 200 mm at apertures below f/8. I was impressed how it rendered subject isolation at f/2.8 which I show in an attached photo. All in all, i recommend this lens if you do not mind the weight.
