A: The difference is based on the focal length of your longest lens. Series 2 is for lenses up to 400mm, Series 3 is for up to 800mm, and Series 4 would be recommended for a professional cine camera. The Ascend is a lightweight travel tripod recommended for lenses up to 200mm.

A: The length of the last leg tube is 18 3/8", but I don't think that isn't the most accurate way to measure its height since the legs are at an angle. I measured the tripod's height with only the top two sections extended and it measures 51 5/8" (4' 3", what a coincidence).

[Twist Lock] Just WOW !!! my first purchase of a RRS product, its so smooth you feel the quality when you first put your hands on it

[Twist Lock] Like many others I too chased the the tripod game and suffice to say, I lost! I went from 20 dollar aluminum to free pods in camera kits to a carbon fiber mid level Oben. None of these performed. I'd set up to shoot the full moon and lock down on it and leave go in preperation to shoot only to find the lens sagged down to point of the subject being at the top of the view finder. All this while bent over because the tripods would not extend for my height. In purchasing the RRS I seem to have come out of the Stone Age. I never realized the true value of a tripod until I purchased the RRS Versa. What a difference! I comfortably stand now with the camera at eye level if I choose, and when I say it's locked down it's locked down. It's solid enough I'm not sure I need a remote shutter release because it dosen't seem to move while I manually press the shutter release.
I can't offer any comparisons to other high end pods like Gitzo Manfrotto or others but I can't imagine anything better. The only issue I see with it are the feet. I need a spike foot to use afield and to get one I have to pony up another 100 bucks or so.
So, if you need a quality pod this guy ticks all the boxes.

[3/8"-16 Male] Smooth and very fluid at 0F with -20F wind chill. Rigid with legs fully splayed out in extremely cold temperatures. Can operate with winter gloves on. Performed like a stellar tripod should, under duress of extreme conditions. RRS is worth the investment.

[Twist Lock] Wow. I'm really impressed. Yes, it's expensive, but the RRS TVC-34L really is the best tripod you will probably ever own. I'm not saying it's the only tripod you'll ever need, but for it's size, weight, and versatility, I really can see this being the go to. Personally, I'm amazed by how tall it can go, and how low it can go at the same time. Unfortunately, I purchased the TA-3 leveling base and, due to the hook, can no longer slam it to the ground. So that's something to be aware of. Other than that, the TVC-34L is super solid and will probably outlast you. I would definitely recommend this to someone serious about a triod.

[Yes] This is a superb tripod. I use it for travel (pack in a suitcase) and for hiking. It is rock solid. No center post means you can get it very low. The overall diameter of the Ultra is narrower than the Versa model so it just packs smaller. Very quick and easy action to open and close the legs. There is webbing affixed to the underside from which you can attach weight, such as a pack. The rounded rubber feet can be swapped out for spike feet or claw feet (which fit virtually all the more recent (last 10+ years) RRS tripods. Highly recommended.

[27 x 4.8 x 4.7"] I have owned a lot of tripods over the years. All major name brands and some off brand, too. I came back to RRS for three reasons - quality, reliability, and stability. After my last tripod bit the dust due to sand and the one before that had a broken leg lock at the worst possible time, I realized there was only one I could actually trust in all conditions - RRS. This tripod is a thing of beauty, the craftsmanship and attention to detail is second to none. The compatibility within the RRS ecosystem is excellent, everything just works. Thats what you want when placing a high value body and lens combo on top of a tripod. Everything to work, reliably. Yeah it’s a lot of money, but it’ll last you a lifetime of shooting if you take care of it.

As a side note, I was torn between this model and the TFC24L Mii. Get this one, the weight difference is negligible and the stability and added support is worth the few extra bucks. I use this with a Z8, Z 2.8 trinity, and the Z 180-600. Absolutely rock solid, zero vibrations and above all - it just works.

[3 Positions] I have purchased many tripods over the past decades and never been truly blown away with any brand or feature I have tried. I used them, I wore them out or they just fell apart and were retired to the bin.
I never have been able to force myself to drop big coin on a seriously expensive tripod from any manufacture because I could never convince myself that it could possibly be worth the extra money.
Well, I was wrong - for a long time - just plain wrong.
This tripod is fantastic. It is super stable. More stable in wind, more stable on hill sides and more stable in riverbeds and on gravel.
I finally made the decision to simply pull the chain and purchase a high end tripod and chose an RRS TVC-34L. I paired the unit with an RRS TA-3 Leveling Base and a BH-40 ball head and couldn't be more thrilled with the quality, smooth operation, steadiness, and ergonomics of the setup. It just works. Hurray - No more 'finger bite' from clunky leg levers! The twist locks on the legs are easy to use and don't require much of a turn to fully unlock the leg or lock it into place again.
I calculated all of the money I have spent on Manfrotto 055 Graphite tripods and truly wish I had spent the proverbial bank on the RRS line much sooner. It would have been much cheaper overall and I imagine I would have been happier. It would have been less money in the garbage, more travel funds and more photos in the bag.

I haven't ever been giddy about a tripod I have owned, until now, but I can honestly report that I am hooked.
