A: I've researched this pretty thoroughly now. ND filters in general and the Marumi ND filters, specifically, reduce VISIBLE light by their claimed filter factors. There is no guarantee that they reduce IR or UV light by similar amounts (in fact, they do not). There are specific standards for solar (i.e. eclipse) viewing filters. ND filters generally do NOT meet these specifications. While a ND 5.0 filter does reduce visible spectra to safe limits for digital photographic purposes, you should NEVER assume them to be safe for direct viewing or viewing through the camera's optical finder. The IR and UV they may be transmitting can still be damaging to your eyes (and, potentially, to your camera, as well). A true eclipse or solar filter should include IR and UV filtration and meet the same standards as those set for eclipse viewing glasses and telescope filters.

A: If I may make a wild guess and say that your viewfinder is not blocked out during your long exposures? Higher end cameras have a built in closure right next to your eyepiece that you need to close, or you will have to do it externally. You are getting a light leak through the viewfinder and it is striking your sensor. This is what happens to me when I forget to close my eyepiece off. I get the same magenta cast. As to why it is magenta, I do not know. Maybe it is because of the infrared is better at passing through the mirror?
