The 3-stop, 72mm Tiffen 81EF/ND 72mm Light Balancing Filtercombines the effects of an 81EF light balancing filter with a neutral density filter. An 81EF filter, the strongest in the 81 series, will more than replace the yellow missing from the image and place all skin tones on a distinctly "warmish" level. Neutral density filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light entering the lens. They have no effect on color balance and are very useful when you want to shoot high-speed film outdoors on a very bright day.

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounted in precision aluminum rings. This process makes for greater accuracy of color as opposed to glass that is simply dyed and become subject to deviation during the dye process.

  • Good for general scenics when the photographer wishes to remove the bluish cast from open shade or just add warmth to the photograph, with an 81EF having the greatest effect

    81 Series Conversion Factors
  • 81 decreases color temperature from 3300 to 3200K
  • 81A decreases color temperature from 3400 to 3200K
  • 81B decreases color temperature from 3500 to 3200K
  • 81C decreases color temperature from 3600 to 3200K
  • 81D decreases color temperature from 3700 to 3200K
  • 81EF decreases color temperature from 3900 to 3200K

  • Enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
  • Decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their backgrounds
  • Allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand, or other bright scenes that could cause overexposure

    Neutral Density Factors
  • ND 0.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO 1/2)
  • ND 0.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO 1/4)
  • ND 0.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8)

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What size lens cap do I need?. I have been told that a 82MM lens cap is the right size as the front portion of the filter is made bigger to insure the filter does not vignette.

A: The front thread on that filter is 86mm an 82mm is too small. The only type of cap that will work is a push on lens cap and in most cases it will be a bit looser than a regular snap on cap. This one should be about the best fit, a href= http://bhpho.to/1wBcCRN target= _blank http://bhpho.to/1wBcCRN./a

Q: 2. With all VND filters, can they be used with a standard UV lens protector or does it have to be removed before attaching the VND? Would rather be any problems/colour shift etc, using both?

A: You can use a VND screwed onto a UV filter, however... you may experience vignetting when shooting at wider angles as you are stacking filters (vignetting is when the camera sensor sees the filter rings, this causes dark corners). Also, a VND filter is highly recommended for still photography to aperture/control your depth of field when shooting in bright light and to control your shutter speed for long exposures during daylight. For video it's a great tool to control depth of field.

Q: 3. When screwing this filter onto a lens or other filters, it doesn't tighten, it just spins and spins. It unscrews fine, but it just won't tighten. Is this normal or is there a defect with the filter I received?

A: It's hard to determine your issue without additional information. Can you please email us at techsupport@a href= http://tiffen.com? target= _blank tiffen.com?/a Please provide a copy of your B&H receipt, a short video clip taken with a smartphone in which you demonstrate the issue and your name, shipping address and phone #. We would be happy to assist you with your issue as our filters come with a 10 year warranty.

Q: 4. can i mount a rubber lens hood on the front ?

A: Yes...the 67mm version has 77mm threads on the front so you could mount a threaded lens hood.

Q: 5. Wil; this filter work with a Nikon 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 zoom lens ? Also, will I get the notorious X-pattern at 18mm?

A: The Tiffen 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is compatible with the Nikon 18-300mm f3.5-6.3 lens. The "X" pattern only occurs when the filter is rotated beyond the 8 stop range (beyond the limit for the filter).

Q: 6. can you get a filter cap to go on it?? thank you, linda

A: Forget using a conventional lens cover. Look into a LensCoat Hoodie.

Q: 7. How thick is this filter?

A: This filter is 4mm thick.

Q: 8. What size lens cap do I need for the 67mm filter?

A: You will need a 77mm lens cap for this filter.

Q: 9. Will 52 mm work for 50mm prime lens?

A: If your lens has a 52mm filter thread, then it will work.

Q: 10. Can this filter be used with a lens hood?

A: I have the filter for my Canon 70-200 and NO, the lens hood cannot physically fit over the filter.

[72 mm] A nice slim filter in new condition.

Contrary to what is often supposed by younger photographers, the 81B balancing filter is the best way of dealing with shade or overcast lighting in digital photography, as opposed to changing WB to accommodate those conditions. The human eye does not detect the blue, but it's there all the same. It also works well for backlit subjects that are effectively in shade, improving the tonality: the subject will be lightened & warmed, and to avoid overall overexposure gentle underexposure may be set. Pleasing people-pictures in what amounts to mixed lighting are one effect. The lighting in Interior shots is frequently shade, while any exterior lighting within the frame is sunlight or daylight, so the same remarks apply.

If the interior lighting is Fluorescent of course an FL-Day with WB set to Daylight works the same as a warming filter; but this is perhaps not quite the spot for that observation.

I use warming nowadays for all my c. 5000K landscape shots, not to cut UV to which the electronic sensor is insensitive, but to cut the haze in distance (which is by no means all visible to my eye-brain combo), define clouds and darken blue sky. That way what I saw is more nearly what I get.

The WB should of course be set to Daylight every time, the meter will take care of the quite modest factor.
