The Arca-Swiss Monoball P0+ Hybrid Quick Set FlipLockfrom Arca Swiss is an unconventional ball head with minimalist design built with portability, ease of operation, and performance in mind. The Monoball p0+ has an inverted, aspheric-shaped ball, which increases resistance as the camera is tilted further from the horizontal plane, stabilizing a heavy camera or long telephoto lens mounted on the head. Turning the highly visible knurled collar on the body will lock even a large camera firmly in place; no need to fumble for the locking knob that may be out of sight. The unique design of the head has negated the need for any lubricating grease that can work against the user and produce "head creep", which can lead to a tripod and camera tipping over.

The p0+ incorporates two self-locking geared leveling mechanisms that can be continuously adjusted by up to 10°, which are arranged at right angles on the x-axis and y-axis perpendicular to each other. This allows the head to be quickly leveled without having to reset the tripod legs. The p0+ has also incorporated four locking points into the panorama swivel, which ensures that the fine adjustment of the gear can be carried out at a neat 90° angles.

Inside the head three locking "planets" clamp firmly around the ball, applying even force on all sides. This design ensures that all camera movements are smooth in any axis. The inverted ball design provides greater stability in keeping the camera's center of gravity closer to the center of the ball. The p0+ allows for a full 90° of tilt. Placing the head's panning system directly below the camera ensures that the panning motion is directly aligned with the camera itself and does not deviate from the same plane.

Locking operation is facilitated by simply turning the highly visible knurled ring on the body of the head. It is easy to feather control between loose and firm lock.

Situating the panning mechanism directly below the camera plate, instead of in the base of the head, means that the pan is always in the same plane as the camera.

10° leveling capability on X-axis and Y-axis.

The aspheric shape of the ball provides progressive resistance to tipping and can prevent accidents.

The integrated quick release plate receiver features a FlipLock lever rather than the classic clamp knob design.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I use Arca-Swiss Slidefix QR Camera Plate (32x32mm) ?

A: Yes you can use the Arca-Swiss Slidefix QR Camera Plate.

Q: 2. does it come with any plate or I have to buy plates separately?

A: Quick Release plates would need to be purchased separately.

Q: 3. I have Nikon D5 with RRS standard Arca-Swiss Quick Release plate which I use with my Gimbal Head. But It does not seem to fit into the Fliplock clamp. Am I doing something wrong?

A: Yes I had the same problem with the flip lock style clamp. I kept turning it trying to get it to tighten and it finally fell apart. I sent it back for the other style the screw tighten and it works as it should.

Q: 4. What plate would I need to use this with a Lumix GH2? (By the way, the product in the picture is different - that is the Classic Quick release, so not the one I'm asking about)

A: The Arca-Swiss Monoball p0 with Fliplock Quick Set Device ball head features a Fliplock quick release plate, which is compatible with the Lumix GH2.

Q: 5. Is there a way to adjust tension on the fine tune knobs? cube has this option, I have a lightweight mirrorless camera and don't need a lot of tension. Thanks in advance.

A: Not that I know of, but it is not an issue. The knobs turn easily and stay put where you leave them. I am having a great time with my p0.

Q: 6. How much turn does the knurled ring travels from the complete lose state to get fully tightened? One turn (360deg) or half turn (180 deg) or one quarter (90deg)?

A: The turn is about 170-180 degrees to fully tighten it.

Q: 7. Will this ball head handle a 5D MkIV + Canon 100-400mm lens? Just want to make sure it won't droop especially when tilted.

A: Yes it will.

Q: 8. Does the fliplock work with RRS plates?

A: Yes it works with any Arca compatible plate such as the RRS plates and brackets.

Q: 9. Is it possible to remove the clamp on this head? I found this fliplock clamp really hard to use and I would like to replace it with a RRS clamp.

A: I do not believe is possible to replace the clamp. And yes, at times it appears difficult to open the clamp but once you master it, it is easy and the safest. To open just squeeze the clamp close and pull the retainer knob at the en towards you. When it releases, just open it half way and release it complety by pulling the second retainer away from the ball. Once I considered this the best ballhead but it tends to come apart if not careful when adjusting the width of the jaws opening.

Q: 10. Hi,If I understand correctly, this head is compatible with both types of camera plates, classic Arca Swiss camera plates and the new so-called MonoballFix plates promoted by Arca Swiss. Is this correct? Thanks in advance.

A: The Arca-Swiss Monoball P0 is compatible with the Monoball Classic systems.

[Yes] I've never liked ballheads but this sounded like a good combination of geared and ball features so I gave it a try. It's great. The ballhead lets you very quickly find approximate setting and then use the gears to quickly fine tune your composition.

This is my first Arca-Swiss head and I'm very impressed by the machining and engineering. My whole rig is very solid now. It's a huge improvement over Manfrotto equipment.

I use the Ruggard 6x4.5 lens case (BH# RULCY16X4) to transport the head. It's the perfect size and provides more than enough padding and protection.

[Yes] In response to Howard request, I am expanding my earlier review without mentioning previous comments. This a solid ballhead and when is locked it will not move. I have owned other Arca-Swiss ball heads as well as Markins, Manfrottos, Feisols, etc and this has been the best for my purposes. It is compact and is the only that allows to reverse the legs of the tripod without interference due to the various knobs in the other ball head.I selected this ballhead because is compact, travel friendly and can be used for landscape as well as bird photography with the rig I built using Hobu side arm and an aluminum block to use similar Wimberly Sidekick or Swing platform. Photo is included. So when I am in the field I only carry this rig and when I use the ballhead, I just remove the rig and becomes a ballhead. Another advantage is that is serves as a leveling device so one does not have to worry when the tripod is not leveled.

[1.795 lb] Paired this with the Gitzo GIGT1545T Traveler Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod. Great combo! This ball head works smoothly and very study. Just follow the directions to know how to properly adjust and use the fliplock. Have had the larger Arca-Swill ball head for years without issue. Plan to have good experience with this one too. Looks to be all great quality.

[Yes] I was a little skeptical because of some of the complaints of the flip lock lever, and the floppy tightening ring. Both complaints are misguided! The lever is a brilliant solution and provides an excellent safety interlock. There are two catches that restrict the opening of the lever. This is a very good thing! The first catch is obvious and needs to be lightly pulled to open the 1st 90 degrees. Then one can see a ribbed rod within the lever that sits right at your fingernail which, when pulled lightly, releases the lever fully. This is the best safety interlock I have ever seen. As for the so-called floppy tightening ring, the manual states clearly the the play is necessary for proper function. It is silly to complain-the ring is very easy to operate. All in all, the best ball head I have ever used. It is crazy strong and light. My carbon fiber tripod FINALLY is really light like it should be! And with the rotational function above the ball, one can shoot panos without an added pano accessory. That alone should save a couple of hundred on the rig! Highly recommended!

[Yes] Let's be clear: the sole purpose of a tripod, is to provide a stable platform for the camera. A tripod leveling base is a waste of money: whether the tripod is level, or not, is immaterial -- leveling the camera is paramount. With a leveling base, a second leveling operation, to level the camera, is required. Why not just cut to the chase, and eliminate the unnecessary tripod leveling base? This Arca-Swiss Monoball P0 ball head does just that. The inverted design (literally) turns the ball head design principle on it's head! This ball head gives the photographer all the advantages of a leveling base, panning base, and aspherical ball head, in one. The inverted ball head design, is evidence of Arca-Swiss' engineers' out-of-the-box thinking a willingness to challenge the dogmatic approach to design and operation: traditions raise institutional barriers that rational treatment. The build quality of Arca-Swiss products is beyond reproach: and this ball head carries that reputation forward. In use, I have found that it functions exactly as expected; intuitive, positive, and fine control. It is dense, but overall, does not add significant weight ideal for landscape work involving a hike-in, where every little bit hurts. Even on lead-pipe studio tripod bolted to the studio floor the advantages of this elegant design (copied by Novoflex https://www.novoflex.com/en/products/camera-support-systems/ball-heads/classicball-5-ii/) is apparent to anybody willing to divorce themselves of the traditional prejudices. To those afflicted with G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), I say this: equipment aids talent it doesn't substitute for it. Simplify, simplify, simplify.

[Yes] The fliplock feature provides a stable lock. The locking mechanism for the ball head is the corrugated ring and is easy to handle. You have to adjust the width for your camera mount to fit. The instructions could be written clearer.

[10°] The Fliplock is easy to operate and the straight forward two step design requiring deliberate actions on my part means distractions or confusing controls wont cause me to release my equipment inadvertently.  Adjustment to the Small Rig L bracket width was straight forward.  I do recommend using only one manufacturers brackets so you wont have to readjust the Fliplock clamp width.  The p0 does sit atop the RRS TQC-14 Mk2 with clearance above the quick column lock collar.  The p0 wont fit between the legs of fold back series 1 tripods without impacting the legs, but the p0 is such a pleasure to use Id rather add the extra length leaving the tripod unfolded or remove the ball head (when backpacking) than opt for a different ball head.  The p0 will securely hold more weight per ounce of ball head than any of its competitors and its design means you will be shooting panoramas with a level horizon while other brand owners are adding on their heavy leveling base or disassembling and reassembling their ball heads for a panorama.  The 3.5 pound combined weight of the RRS TQC-14 and the Arca-Swiss p0 mean I will be climbing to the top of a 14er this summer with my gear rather than opting to leave it behind as in years past--no more regrets.

[90°] Arca Swiss is in a different quality and design zip code from it's competitors. One of the most consistently innovative companies in our craft they do most everything differently, but with a purpose, and all of their designs are brilliantly useful and executed at the highest level. Ultimately they just work and work and work and work and make you smile while you use them. I own and use the p0, p1 and Core 75 Arca Swiss heads for different purposes and they are all great. This little p0 is small, light and grips like a vise when locked in place supporting up to 44 lbs without a complaint. One of the unsung and underrated hero's of Arca is the brilliant Fliplock Quick Set that locks the camera in place. It is small, perfect, has it's own lock, is very secure and you can feel totally comfortable hanging an expensive camera in its confident grasp. If you need a small positive ball head I can't recommend this one highly enough - except that it's worth spending the extra $$ for the the p0+ which has a preset tensioning adjustment. Products from Arca aren't cheap but they are worth every penny.
