Schoeps Mk 5 Microphone Capsule - Matte Gray

Schoeps Mk 5 Microphone Capsule - Matte Gray
  • Product Code: eq8455
  • Availability: In Stock

$3,540.00 $5,133.00

The matte gray MK 5 Microphone Capsule from Schoeps offers 2 selectable directional patterns, but uses only 1 membrane.

In its omnidirectional setting, the MK 5 Microphone Capsule is a true pressure transducer with smooth, extended low-frequency response, low sensitivity to most wind and breath noise, handling noise or mechanical vibration, and no proximity effect.

In its cardioid setting, the MK 5 Microphone Capsule retains its full directionality even at very low frequencies. The benefits of this design in purity and clarity of sound are immediately audible. Additionally, the MK 5 has a slight high-frequency emphasis.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What are the differences between cmc1 and cmc1u? tkx.

A: Schoeps CMC 1 U has an XLR connector and Schoeps CMC 1 L has a Lemo connector.

Q: 2. What are the differences between cmc1 and cmc1u? tks.

A: The "CMC 1 U" is the part identifier for the amplifier portion of the Schoeps CMC 1 (the body of the microphone), without any capsule. The Schoeps CMC 1 Microphone Amp, MK 41 Supercardioid Condenser Capsule, and Cinela Windshield (Matte Gray) includes the amplifier, the MK 41 capsule, and a windshield.

Q: 3. Would mounting this on camera work well when trying to get audio of a moving documentary subject?

A: Yes, the Schoeps CMC641 Set Colette Series Supercardioid Microphone Set could indeed serve as a high-quality on-camera microphone for capturing the audio of subjects in close range situations. The camera would need to be equipped with a 48V capable XLR input connection to accommodate the Schoeps.

Q: 4. What is a good schock mount/suspension holder to fit this microphone? I realize this mic is predominantly used indoors, but if I am in a situation where I need to use it outside, what product to reduce wind effect will fit this mic?

A: I have a Rycote Blimp with a lyre mount for bad windy conditions and the usual dead kittens for general breezes. But you said it yourself, this is an indoor mic. Moreover, it is a short mic so not so great at a distance of more than a few feet unless you have an amplified audio target. If you have critical audio needs outdoors, your better bet is to rent a good shotgun mic or buy something like the Sennheiser 416, Sanken Cs3, or Schoeps CMIT if you want to go all in. I have used the CMC6 outdoors (without needing a blimp). If you can get in close, it's OK but at say four or five feet, I don't know that the 'Schoeps' difference is any longer in effect. These weren't scientific shootouts and audio environments vary but I suspect plain old microphone physics trump German engineering at a certain distance.

Q: 5. Hello! With this microphone amplifier, will I still need phantom power to connect a condenser microphone to a camera like the Sony A7SIII, or a recorder like the Atomos Ninja V? If so, what do you recommend?

A: This amplifier is designed to work with the Shoeps MK series capsules, and will still require phantom power to run.

Q: 6. What is the size and weight of this microphone?

A: As per the Manufacturer: CCM 41 LG Length: 46 mm Diameter: 20 mm Weight: 45 g

Q: 7. can i opt for the Mk4 with this set, instead of the mk41?

A: The Schoeps Colette CMC 6U Microphone Amp, MK 41 Supercardioid Condenser Capsule & Low-Cut Filter (Matte Gray), BH # SCMC641C60GS, does not offer the MK 4 capsule as an option.

Q: 8. Is there a recommended field recorder for a high end mic like this? Is a Zoom F3 good enough?

A: The Zoom F3 would be an excellent choice for use with the Schoeps CMC641. It offers high-quality recording in 32-bit, which allows for great dynamic range with sensitive microphones.

Q: 9. Having this microphone a built in amplifier does it require phantom power?

A: Yes, the Schoeps CCM 41 LG does require phantom power.

Q: 10. Do they make these in black?

A: The Schoeps B5-D Hollow Foam Windscreen is available in gray, and chroma green. Unfortunately, there isn't a black color available. Here is a link to the Chroma Green version: https://bhpho.to/3IO8zHM

[0.2 lb] It's a beautiful microphone. I bought it because I wanted something clean that I could distort according to my needs in post and this has that flexibility as well as having a standalone beautiful sound.

[7 x 4.5 x 0.1"] The new CMC1 is great, super small, awesome for gigs. I have it for only 2 weeks, but the few times I used I was very happy!

[7 x 4.5 x 0.1"] I'm using this mic to not over to provide voice-over commentary for a documentary that I'm working on, but also for Zoom meetings. Together, with the absolutely tiny stand (Schoeps TCg Miniature Table Stand), the mic is a discrete 'boom' mic that disappears on the desktop and avoids extraneous room sounds. While expensive, the quality and size are unbeatable.

And if you're already using the mic for its typical use, it can now dual-purpose as a very high quality desktop mic using the Schoeps TCg stand.

[0.9 oz (25.0 g)] Schoeps says that there's no discernible difference in sound quality, but when I heard this one, I put my CMC6 up for sale immediately.

The higher SPLs do make a difference; and to my ear the CMC1 has a more clean and transparent sound to it. I know that sounds lame, but it's hard to describe. This CMC1 is amazing.

HIGHLY recommended.

[0.8" (20.0 mm)] MK22 cartridges are halfway between the MK21 Wide Cardioid and the MK4 Cardioid - fairly directional but with extended base response. I frequently record in highly reverberant venues, such as cathedrals. Used as space microphones, the MK22 gives a clear sound with good stereo image, and a good balance with ambience. I plan to use them on a 1 meter stereo in ORTF configuration, with a pair of spaced MK22 microphones. Omnis tend to be muddy in this application and cards lose the warmth I seek. The MK22s will form the core sound - everything else is just for emphasis. MK22s are also effective for chamber music, often in conjunction with a pair of MK2H (far field) Omnis.

[0.8" (20.0 mm)] I'm using the MK8 with a Schoeps miniCMIT for my M/S setup and I'm extremely pleased with my field recording and SFX results. I wouldn't trade this for anything.

[7 x 4.5 x 0.1"] I already own an mk4, and I wanted to get a second mk4 so I could record a stereo pair for piano and acoustic guitar and it sounds so good. The mk4 I already own, I've had for about 4 years now, and it's my go to mic for everything -- strings, piano, guitar, voice. I have tried many many mics above and below this price point and to my ears, none sound as natural. I rarely need EQ when using schoeps mics. It also matches my other mk4 perfectly. Very happy with the purchase. Also B+H customer service was great and the capsule arrived quickly.

[0.2 lb] Bought this mic a year ago primarily for broadcast EFP high def video work with Rycote's WindJammer. Looked at Sennheiser but I feel that this is a newer design and want a unique sounding mic vs. the typical Senn. 416. The shotgun performed very well in virtually all scenarios. It sounds like I put a high quality lav right at the bottom of the shirt but it doesn't have that lav characteristic. There are times where it's very annoying to see a lav being mic'd up on the talent's body OR high wind condition. This lightweight blue beauty fits the bill virtually all the times. High tolerance to off axis positioning. Forgiving at times for novice boom op. It sounds very crisp, accurate and has that condenser quality to dialogue field recording. Incredible clarity on male dialogue recording. Only small complaint is that it will not reject high ambient noise situation. I'd have to have a 2nd mic just for that situation. Also, very good reach. Most of the shoot the mic had to be placed about 4-5 feet on top of talent's head and it performed like it was within 1 foot. Expensive but it's a shot gun mic that you don't have to upgrade much or ever have the need to worry about depreciating. It actually costs about $150 more this year due to unsteady dollar. Get it fast before another price hike.

[1.1" (27.0 mm)] I'm using this with a CMC6 and a CMIT5U for an M/S rig. I know there has been some debate on Gearslutz regarding Schoeps vs Sennheiser for this application but to my ears, the sound is great. Gives me an accurate and clear reproduction of the sounds being recorded. It's pricey but I'm not afraid to pay for the results that I get using this gear.
