This 2- to 5-stop, 82mm PolarPro Peter McKinnon ND Filter 82mm 2-5 Stopfrom PolarPro Peter McKinnon ND Filter 82mm 2-5 Stopis designed for lenses with 82mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 2- to 5 stops. The 0.6 to 1.5 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing a wider aperture or slower shutter speed without overexposing your image. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing the exposure time, you convey movement or increase the blur. By increasing the aperture, the image depth of field can be more easily controlled. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring features a numbered scale of the stop values, and it also features haptic feedback to feel a click when reaching a number without the need to look at the ring. The ring features side knurling for a secure grip, enabling fast and precise positioning, and it is designed to prevent any rotation beyond the stop values etched on it.

This filter is constructed from quartz glass for enhanced durability. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, 16 layers of antireflective coatings offer scratch protection to the filter substrate while promoting clarity and color fidelity. The coatings also provide improved beading when in contact with water or oil, allowing for more efficient cleaning.

The quartz optics are set within an aluminum alloy filter ring assembly for lightweight durability. The unique Defender 360 hybrid case/cover is included for storage and transport and acts as both a front cap when the filter is in place on a lens and as a rigid dustproof and waterproof storage case by adding the rear cover when the filter is not in use.

Variable neutral density filter allows applying differing amounts of density from scene to scene.

0.6 to 1.5 neutral density filter darkens the entire image area to easily photograph with a longer shutter speed for added blur or to convey more movement.

Providing a reduction of 2- to 5 stops, this filter allows a wider aperture to control the depth of field and help emphasize the subject.

Offers increased flexibility to use specific ISO settings or ISO films under bright ambient light.

Provides increased exposure flexibility while using cinema or video cameras within a designated film frame rate.

Constructed from quartz glass for enhanced durability.

Multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections while promoting clarity and color fidelity.

Side knurling allows the filter glass to be easily rotated.

Filter ring incorporates a haptic feedback mechanism for quick adjustment, without stopping to look at the filter position.

Front filter ring scale ensures that its rotation corresponds to the filter's exposure reduction range.

Microfiber cloth for cleaning and maintenance.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the 82mm PP VND have front threads for stacking another filter, like a mist?

A: The front of the PolarPro 82mm Peter McKinnon Signature Edition II Variable ND 0.6 to 1.5 Filter (2 to 5-Stop) is unthreaded, so you cannot attach another filter to the front.

Q: 2. Does this have hard stops?

A: This filter does not have hard stops. The markings are for reference only.

Q: 3. Does anyone have a fix for the PolarPro 95mm VNDs not fitting properly on the Canon 28-70 2.0?

A: Yes, you can use this PolarPro 95mm Course Thread Adapter on the Canon 28-70 2.0 and it will accept PolarPro 95mm filters. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1784168-REG/

Q: 4. How does this one differ from the Signature II edition? Using a RED V-Raptor, Canon RF: 24-70, 15-35,100-500 for motorsports.

A: The PolarPro 82mm Peter McKinnon Mist Edition II VND ND64 to ND512 Filter (6 to 9-Stop) would have both diffusion and a variable ND filter built into one frame while the Signature II Edition would be just a variable ND.

Q: 5. I run the Sony e-mount for both photo and video. Is this the best filter solution for me or is there a better option out there? Also, how much filter would I need outside in bright sun to shoot at f1.4?

A: No, the following workflow ND 4x6 or 100mm ND filters would make a more suitable workflow. Here are the 4x6 filters that we have to offer https://bhpho.to/3I4VM76 Be mindful of the following wide angle lens look into soft transitions filters mid-range lens look into hard transitions filters

Q: 6. Would these work on Lenses that have a 58mm Filter thread?

A: Unfortunately, PolarPro does not have a 58mm adapter ring for the PolarPro Peter McKinnon Chroma VND/PL Black Mist Filter for Helix Maglock (2 to 5-Stop, Grade 1/4).

Q: 7. Can I stack this with a PolarPro 4 stop ND filter?

A: The PolarPro Peter McKinnon Chroma Variable ND & Polarizer Filter 82mm does not have front filter threads. However, the PolarPro QuartzLine Solid ND Filter (82mm, 4-Stop) has 82mm front threads. Therefore you can stack the variable filter on top of the solid ND.

Q: 8. Why would one choose 2-5 over 6-9 or vice versa? If I can only choose one which one would it be and why?

A: It all depends on what you are shooting, the type of lens you have and the lighting conditions, etc... If you have a very fast lens and it is very bright outside, then the 6-9 is more appropriate.

Q: 9. Is there a "minimum" spot on this filter that is light enough to focus through? Or are you trying to focus through the 6-stop ND?

A: The best way to focus with a strong ND filter like the PolarPro 82mm Peter McKinnon Signature Edition II Variable ND 1.8 to 2.7 Filter (6 to 9-Stop)is to use the live view feature if you are using a DSLR. The monitor will compensate for the filter and show a well exposed image on the LCD. Mirrorless cameras are always in live view mode so the image is visible due to the compensation. Alternatively you can remove the filter, compose and focus the shot, then attach the filter for the exposure.

Q: 10. What is the difference between Helix and Helix Maglock?

A: There is no difference between PolarPro Helix and PolarPro Helix Maglock. They are the same. They just added the name MagLock so customers know you can lock the filter after it is attached.

[0.47 lb] its best quality

[0.47 lb] I was willing to shell out for a good ND filter to avoid color shift and other ND issues, and after using it all day for a wedding I can say it was SO worth it. This filter is amazing — it looks and feels like such high quality, there is zero noticeable color shift, and the holder it comes in has such a luxury feel. I highly recommend!

[Aluminum] Like many of anyone who reads this, I have used many ND filters over the years. From inexpensive to not so inexpensive. This ND filter is as good as others close to the price, but what sets it WAY apart is the case. Unless I'm unaware of other filters that do the same, how you store and attach the filter has changed how I pack! As a result, I have sold all of my other ND's and will be using this with adapters. This will be the only brand and design I will ever use again.

[Glass] The best variable ND Filter on the market. Used it this past weekend on a very sunny outdoor shoot. Edited the video with no problems in aberrations or any other artifacts.

[Glass] Not cheap but you get what you pay for. Outstanding quality that improves almost every image. Very easy to work with due to notched stops. Was recommended to me and I love it

[0.47 lb] I don't see why I'll ever remove this from my Lumix S Pro 50mm. Maybe only for the 2 to 5-Stop for lower light indoor conditions.

I tried others before and there was always some crazy vignetting that you can't remove in post. I don't see that here at all.

If you need, and why wouldn't you, to open up your aperture... get them.

I'm now thinking of buying the mist edition just to take that clinical look away from the sharp, modern lenses that I use.
