This 6- to 9-stop, 82mm PolarPro Peter McKinnon ND Filter 82mm 6-9 Stopfrom PolarPro Peter McKinnon ND Filter 82mm 6-9 Stopis designed for lenses with 82mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 6- to 9 stops. The 1.8 to 2.7 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing a wider aperture or slower shutter speed without overexposing your image. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing the exposure time, you convey movement or increase the blur. By increasing the aperture, the image depth of field can be more easily controlled. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring features a numbered scale of the stop values, and it also features haptic feedback to feel a click when reaching a number without the need to look at the ring. The ring features side knurling for a secure grip, enabling fast and precise positioning, and it is designed to prevent any rotation beyond the stop values etched on it.

This filter is constructed from quartz glass for enhanced durability. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, 16 layers of antireflective coatings offer scratch protection to the filter substrate while promoting clarity and color fidelity. The coatings also provide improved beading when in contact with water or oil, allowing for more efficient cleaning.

The quartz optics are set within an aluminum alloy filter ring assembly for lightweight durability. The unique Defender 360 hybrid case/cover is included for storage and transport and acts as both a front cap when the filter is in place on a lens and as a rigid dustproof and waterproof storage case by adding the rear cover when the filter is not in use.

Variable neutral density filter allows applying differing amounts of density from scene to scene.

1.8 to 2.7 neutral density filter darkens the entire image area to easily photograph with a longer shutter speed for added blur or to convey more movement.

Providing a reduction of 6- to 9 stops, this filter allows a wider aperture to control the depth of field and help emphasize the subject.

Offers increased flexibility to use specific ISO settings or ISO films under bright ambient light.

Provides increased exposure flexibility while using cinema or video cameras within a designated film frame rate.

Constructed from quartz glass for enhanced durability.

Multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections while promoting clarity and color fidelity.

Side knurling allows the filter glass to be easily rotated.

Filter ring incorporates a haptic feedback mechanism for quick adjustment, without stopping to look at the filter position.

Front filter ring scale ensures that its rotation corresponds to the filter's exposure reduction range.

Microfiber cloth for cleaning and maintenance.

Includes Defender 360 hybrid cap/case for storage and transport, featuring a waterproof and dustproof seal.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this have hard stops?

A: This filter does not have hard stops. The markings are for reference only.

Q: 2. Does anyone have a fix for the PolarPro 95mm VNDs not fitting properly on the Canon 28-70 2.0?

A: Yes, you can use this PolarPro 95mm Course Thread Adapter on the Canon 28-70 2.0 and it will accept PolarPro 95mm filters. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1784168-REG/

Q: 3. Why would one choose 2-5 over 6-9 or vice versa? If I can only choose one which one would it be and why?

A: It all depends on what you are shooting, the type of lens you have and the lighting conditions, etc... If you have a very fast lens and it is very bright outside, then the 6-9 is more appropriate.

Q: 4. Can this filter be used with a lens hood?

A: Most likely yes it will work with the lens hood but it also depends on which lens you are using.

Q: 5. I run the Sony e-mount for both photo and video. Is this the best filter solution for me or is there a better option out there? Also, how much filter would I need outside in bright sun to shoot at f1.4?

A: No, the following workflow ND 4x6 or 100mm ND filters would make a more suitable workflow. Here are the 4x6 filters that we have to offer https://bhpho.to/3I4VM76 Be mindful of the following wide angle lens look into soft transitions filters mid-range lens look into hard transitions filters

Q: 6. Is the rotation smooth like a 'declicked' cine iris ring or does it have click stops like a traditional photo lens iris ring?

A: No, the filter rotation is not smooth. As stated on page 7 of the User Manual for the PolarPro 95mm Peter McKinnon Mist Edition II VND ND4 to ND32 Filter (2 to 5-Stop), the filter is equipped with haptic feedback to improve the process of adjusting optical density.

Q: 7. is it a polarizer filter as well?

A: This is mainly for reducing the light as a whole while a polarizer will reduce glare/reflections with a minimal loss of light.

Q: 8. What is the difference between Helix and Helix Maglock?

A: There is no difference between PolarPro Helix and PolarPro Helix Maglock. They are the same. They just added the name MagLock so customers know you can lock the filter after it is attached.

Q: 9. Can you have half stop e.g. 2.5, 3.5 etc without incurring problem with this VND?

A: You can indeed! with the way the glass is designed on these filters, you don't run into any of the X cross pattern problems.

Q: 10. Can you stack 2 of these VND/PL FILTERS for additional ND values?

A: Two of the PolarPro Peter McKinnon Chroma VND/PL Filter for Helix Maglock (6 to 9-Stop) should not be stacked as it creates aberrations.

[Aluminum] You really can't go wring with anything by PolarPro. I also own the original version of this model and it's worth it to get the new one. Image is beautiful and the packing on this is A+.

[0.47 lb] Compared to other variable ND filters, this one is the best I've used by a mile. No X shape in the image at the upper end.

[Aluminum] I was willing to shell out for a good ND filter to avoid color shift and other ND issues, and after using it all day for a wedding I can say it was SO worth it. This filter is amazing — it looks and feels like such high quality, there is zero noticeable color shift, and the holder it comes in has such a luxury feel. I highly recommend!

[0.47 lb] It's so hard to spend so much on something like filters. I've come to realize there is cheap and S tier. Nothing in between. Do yourself a solid and go ahead and get the good one. By the time you buy a few of what you would think to be mid level you could have gotten this quality piece of glass. Don't put a $30 filter on you multi thousand dollar lens. You and your art deserve it!
The construction is premium and the case/lens cap make installation and protection seamless. Very slight color shift. Nisi offers a true color if that's what you need but the build quality of the polarpro is the best ive seen.

[0.47 lb] I am a wedding videographer and photographer. I have used a couple different filters and this one blows them all out of the water! I have this one for the Canon rf 50mm F1.2 and the two are a perfect pair. It is a little on the pricey side for sure but if you do any kind of video work it is a game changer.
