Enjoy accurate and lifelike sound with the Kali Audio IN-5, a 3-way studio monitor designed for mixing, production, and critical listening. This monitor offers a 5" woofer, a 4" midrange driver, and a coaxial 1" tweeter nested amid inside the midrange driver. This driver architecture helps give the monitor a realistic stereo image, alongside clarity of frequency and transient representation essential for professional use.

The monitor utilizes a tri-amped design powered by Class-D amplification to bolster reliability while banishing noise to a nearly sub-audible level. Integrated EQs include 3-position HF and LF trim switches as well as multiple boundary EQ settings for better placement on meter bridges, desks, or stands. You'll get a usable frequency range of 47 Hz to 21 kHz (±3 dB) out of this monitor, extending down to 39 Hz and up to 25 kHz at -10 dB. Sitting 7.2' away from the monitor, you'll be able to play audio at 85 dB with 20 dB of headroom to spare, which is a suitable level for many mixing environments.

The monitor offers XLR, TRS, and RCA connections, giving you options for your preferred method of connectivity. Also, the speaker can run both -10 dBV for consumer sources, as well as the professional +4 dBu standard. The monitor ships with a power cable.

The IN-5 features a Class-D amp with very little self-noise, an upgraded DSP section, and upgraded transducers for better reliability.

Because of the coincident placement of the midrange and tweeter and the crossover of the woofer to the midrange (280 Hz), the IN-5 is an acoustic point source. This gives it an ideal directivity characteristic for a studio monitor. You will be able to hear a very lifelike stereo image, with details placed clearly and consistently. Off-axis lobing that is unavoidable in a 2-way system is virtually eliminated.

Substantial work was done to optimize the midrange driver not only for its own acoustic performance, but also for its role as the waveguide for the tweeter. The shape is very precise to allow for controlled directivity at midrange to tweeter crossover, ensuring accurate summing both on and off axis. Excursion on the midrange is limited to less than 1mm peak to peak, so that the oscillation of the midrange does not have a negative effect on the tweeter.

The IN-5 incorporates all the benefits of Kali's Lone Pine series monitors. These include optimized woofers for powerful, clean bass, a front-firing port tube, and our boundary compensation EQs.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Are these good for music production?

A: Yes, this monitor is good for music production., specifically, tracking and mixing, but not for mastering.

Q: 2. Is this one speaker or two?

A: It's for one passive speaker.

Q: 3. What cables would I need to connect these speakers to my iMac?

A: You can use BH #RORCC15352XM, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1376960-REG/roland_rcc_15_352xm_black_series_balanced_interconnect.html Or BH #PRISPM2PM10, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/134995-REG/Pro_Co_Sound_IPBQ2Q_10_Insert_Y_Cable_1_4_Male.html

Q: 4. This item shows up when filtering for AES inputs. But that seems incorrect. Does it have AES?

A: This unit does not include AES inputs. AES inputs are available on the 8330 and larger.

Q: 5. Cables needed to connect to a Focusrite solo

A: That will depend on which generation of Scarlett Solo you have. Assuming you have a pair of the Rokit 5 G4's, if your Solo is 2nd Generation will need two rca to xlr male cables like these B&H # COCRMXM6. If your Solo is the newer 3rd generation, then you will need two trs to xlr male cables like these B&H # PEPMTRSXM06.

Q: 6. Do I need to purchase SAM tech separately or it will be provided with speakers if I buy pair?

A: Tom from 2018 is correct that the software is free, but that doesn't answer the actual question. Yes, you need to purchase the GLM kit. No, it's not provided with the speakers. Without the hardware in the GLM kit, you can't do anything with the free software or use any of the SAM features.

Q: 7. Will these do OK at a distance of 3 to 4 meters from the speakers? Want to use it in a medium size bedroom.

A: Thanks. That page doesn’t speak about the distance between speakers and listener — just between speakers and walls, and angles among all the three. For this price the info should be more accurate: at what distance from the speakers does the quality fall off? There are reviewers who say they attach these speakers to TVs in their living rooms. Are they in such tiny rooms that their TV is 2 meters away from them? I doubt it. This is the info I need: would 4 meters be too much for these speakers costing thousands? 5 meters? What’s the number?

Q: 8. Is this works on a IMAC computer?

A: Yes, the M-Audio BX5 D3 5" 2-Way 100W Powered Studio Monitor Kit (Pair) can be connected to an Apple iMac computer. If you are not using a USB audio interface with line output connections for speakers, you will probably want to use a monitor controller like the Mackie Big Knob Passive Studio Monitor Controller (B&H # MABKPASIVBLK) which will connect to the computer's 3.5mm audio output or headphone jack.

Q: 9. Is the price per pair or per each? How many speakers in the box?

A: Price is per each single speaker item only.

Q: 10. The pictures don't show an XLR or 1/4" input jack, but the specs say there is one...where is it?

A: The XLR-1/4" combo jack is not shown in the photos we have posted. It is located on the back of the speaker, on the lower right side. I was able to find a photo on Neumann's website which shows the XLR-1/4" combo jack labeled as #14: https://static-neumann.s3.amazonaws.com/img/3060/x2_desktop_KH80DSPAG_Features.jpg

[Single Monitor] These monitor speakers, although pricy, are very well suited to mixing and editing in protools for a studio either at home or in a formal studio setting. They are transparent with a very flat sound that does not emphasize any particular aspect of the frequency spectrum. Flat sound as used here is a good thing. The bass is surprisingly strong in my editing room which only about 8' x 10'. I did add a subwoofer for frequencies below 50Hz. The highs are exceptionally clear and the midrange very smooth. These speakers are very easy on the ears even after several hours editing. I highly recommend them. I use them mainly to edit recording of live theatrical musical performances.

[Active 3-Way] A remarkable value. After trying various settings of the 8 pins, I concluded that they got it right with everything set neutral. Very precise, objective and detailed. Will add the $500 Kali subwoofer to cover the lowest octave.

[Active 3-Way] I own one SC-204 that I use as my keyboard monitor. Two SC-205's and TS-108 sub. I use the 205's and sub to gig small home venues. These speakers are great. Flat sound to me and they work. Great sound for mid to upper-mid priced speakers I would buy again and recommend to all.

[Active 3-Way] These V2 monitors are dead silent. They're very clear. Imaging is not quite as good as the nht pro system they're replacing, but still very nice. I haven't done much mixing with these yet but the couple projects that I've done have translated well to laptop, car and hifi. Overall a very affordable and accurate. Time will tell if they're durable.

[Single Monitor] Side by side comparison to ADAM speakers revealed these are the best speakers on the market. They have very clear and big bass. And they have very clear mids and highs. If clarity and low end boom and bass clarity is your thing, then these speakers are the best you will find in the music store. They are better than ADAM Audio speakers in a side by side comparison the rep took me thru, it was close with ADAM being second, but after listening to the EVE SC208s, the ADAMS started to sound just a little more muffled than when I first heard them before hearing the EVE SC208s, and EVE SC208 gave off a big clear, defined, tight bass that was better than ADAM's. Surprisingly the budget Mackie MR8 MK3 kinda came in close third place in all the test. Mackie has bass too and pretty clear mids in the MK3 series only, but EVE's are the best of all on the shelf music store monitors. They are the most expensive tho, so you know why, but you get what you pay for. If you want the monitor with the biggest baddest clearest bass and mids and highs that are not fatiguing at long periods of time, then you will have to pay the cost to be the boss with these.

[115 dB] I upgraded from my Kali LP-6s to the Kali IN-8s. What a difference! I'm hearing things on music that I've listened to for years and haven't heard. And, it is allowing me to mix much better, due to the greater clarity in the upper mids. I am happy with my upgrade.

[Active 3-Way] I am a combination of amateur audio guy (singer-songwriter) and electronics consumer. I wanted to upgrade my studio speakers from older M-Audio BXB (8 inch) which have served me well. I went to the internet and looked at audio websites to see what the audio guys are saying, and many of them recommended these new Kali Monitors. The only thing to note is that they cost about $200 more than the other monitors in their class. That wasn't a deal breaker--I will pay more for quality sound. I hooked them up to my Steinberg U22 interface and watched the movie Dances With Wolves on YouTube and it was so enjoyable hearing the fullness and clarity of the audio. I don't think you can go wrong with these monitors.

[115 dB] We have JBL 308s which we like a lot so we tried the 705s as a step-up.
They sounded great for movies, very dynamic with pin-point imaging, but yeh, two hours was about as long as you wanted to listen to them. Not the sort of speaker you want for long listening sessions. Quite harsh.

So I ordered the Kali In-8s along with the Watts subwoofer. (In a normal room, I doubt you'd need the sub for music.)

So.... they get loud enough to make my ears hurt. They make all the vocalists I like sound good*. The bass goes lower than most music (lower than all music with the sub ('cept 16' organ pipes)). They are revealing enough for any editing requirements. They have the most amazing 3D imaging I've ever heard. They are not fatiguing.

If you want a solid hifi system that won't break the bank or lead to creeping audiophilia, buy these and never look back.

If you have a small studio doing mostly vanity recordings, buy these as monitors because they're what your customers want to hear. (buy revealing cans for yourself)

* If they make ALL vocalists good, then they're 'flat'.

(( all opinions my own - I started selling speakers in '68, so I've heard a few. ))
