This 46mm Tiffen 46mm ND Filter - 2-Stopis a solid ND filter with a filter factor of 4x that provides a 2-stop exposure reduction. Its 0.6 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this suitable for solar photography including eclipse photos? The description says so, but there is a contradictory warning

A: This Tiffen Solar ND Filter is suitable for photographing Solar eclipse, the warning is towards the using the filter as glass to look through with your eyes- that's what the warning is about. You shall never use the photo filters for gazing at the Sun or Solar eclips nor looking through the view finder. Most photographers use time-lapse function for shooting Eclipse. For previewing the Sun you can use Solar Binoculars https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/solar-viewing-binoculars/ci/31714 , for more information please, refer to our Solar Eclipse guide https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/8-lessons-learned-when-i-photographed-a-total-solar-eclipse

Q: 2. If I’m shooting an eclipse event but not the sun/moon directly—just people—is this filter still needed to protect my gear?

A: This Solar Filter is used when you're shooting directly at the sun during the eclipse. This would be too dark to use for normal photography.

Q: 3. Is this filter suitable for the upcoming eclipse 10/14/23?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) (B&H# TI95CND54) is absolutely suitable for photographing any annular solar eclipse such as the one on October 14, 2023 (and future such annular solar eclipses), as well as any total solar eclipse such as the one on April 8, 2024 -- and later ones, too, in 2026, 2028, etc. As with any similar photography (rather than optical viewing) style filter, the image would then be viewed using electronic means such as in digital live view mode when using a DSLR (rather than using the optical viewfinder) or with any mirrorless camera using its digital viewfinder or rear digital screen.

Q: 4. does it work to photograph the sun and solar eclipses?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (58mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is for Solar Photography, Not Safe for Direct Viewing of the Sun. It is not ISO 12312-2 compliant and therefore not safe for direct viewing of the Sun. Always use approved ISO 12312-2 certified safety glasses when viewing the Sun directly.

Q: 5. Does this meet the ISO 12312-2 standard?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (58mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is not ISO 12312-2 compliant.

Q: 6. Is this Solar filter ISO 12312-2 certified?

A: Unfortunately, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is not ISO 12312-2 certified. It should not be used to look directly at the sun with our eyes. It can be used for the camera to take a photo of the sun. Look only in the LCD live view to compose the photo. Do not look in an optical viewfinder.

Q: 7. Pls confirm that the 46mm filter will fit in the rear drop-in slot of a Nikon Z 800mm? i.e. it's not too thick

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (46mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is incompatible with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S Lens. Solar filters must be on the front of the lens to be safe. Get the MrStarGuy Adjustable Objective White Light Solar Filter (145-175mm OD), BH #STSGFT043B.

Q: 8. Will this 43mm solar filter fit these Canon lenses: RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens ; RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (43mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is too small to thread in to both of the lenses mention above. This filter is design to fit a front thread of 43mm only. Your Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens has a 77mm front thread while Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens has a 67mm front threads. Tiffen makes the same filter in both of size.

Q: 9. Would this be considered a 52mm drop in filter for Nikon lens?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (52mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is too thick to work as a drop-in filter.

Q: 10. If I’m shooting an eclipse event but not the sun/moon itself—just people—is this filter still necessary to protect my gear?

A: If you are not taking photos of the sun then you don't need a solar filter.

[Glass] I purchased this filter for the April 2024 eclipse and even with partly cloudy skies was worth it.

[Glass] I pulled the trigger on the filter when the forecast called for clear skies for the recent eclipse. I used my Canon RF 70-200mm f/4L lens on my R5. The 82mm-77mm adapter allowed me to use the filter on it.

[Solid ND] I wanted to take pictures with my Canon R7 and this allowed me to do just that - safely without hurting my eyes. The pictures were better than I hoped for since in our area there where periods of clouds with a few openings. I liked the cloud pictures since they shown color and depth.

[Glass] Did the job as advertised - allowed me to get clear shots of the partial eclipse.

[0.1 lb] I purchased this filter for the April 2024 eclipse, and it worked perfectly. You can see sunspots in my picture below towards the end of the eclipse! I was able to add it and remove it smoothly from the Canon 100-400mm mk2 lens, which turned out to be critical because I had to take the filter off during peak eclipse (totality). I've had filters before which were very difficult to remove; this was great.

[0.1 lb] This filter delivers great imagery of the sun! Brings out really good detail of sun spots and of course the eclipse images were fantastic. During totality, it was super easy to take the filter off quickly and put it right back on. Good quality and good imagery.

[Aluminum] Not much to say. Works well for photographing an eclipse. It was only partial with some clouds at times in New Jersey. Playing with exposure allowed for some capture of cloud detail or simple straight shot with no clouds. Holding ASA at 100 you can experiment with a wide range of aperture and shutter for differing effcts.
