The long-awaited installment in the popular series of fast, compact cameras, the Ricoh GR III Camera with Extra Battery Kitcontinues the legacy of being a pocketable powerhouse, offering impressive image quality, fast response, and immense portability. Featuring a redeveloped imaging feature-set, the GR III incorporates a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and GR Engine 6 to realize smooth tonality, rich color, and high sensitivity from ISO 100-102400, along with the ability to produce high-resolution 14-bit DNG stills or Full HD video. Complementing the sensor design is an 18.3mm, f/2.8 prime lens, which has a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 28mm. Additionally, a first for GR, a 3-axis Shake Reduction System compensates for the effects of camera shake to help render sharper handheld shots when working with slower shutter speeds.

Physically, the GR III looks familiarly compact, but incorporates a redesigned control scheme to promote a larger, more comfortable grip while maintaining easy access to physical controls. Use the 3.0" 1.037m-dot LCD for image composition, playback, and menu navigation, and its touchscreen design offers intuitive control along with Touch AF capabilities. Pair the built-in Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi with your mobile device for quick, wireless transferring of files to your smartphone or tablet.

Featuring an updated design, a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor pairs with a new GR Engine 6 to produce high-resolution 14-bit DNG or JPEG stills with impressive tonality, natural color rendering, and high sensitivity from ISO 100-102400. In addition to full-resolution, wide-angle images, a pair of useful crop modes—35mm at 15MP and 50mm at 7MP—let you simulate the look of working with longer focal lengths.

In addition to stills shooting, the GR III is also capable of recording Full HD 1080 video at 60p, 30p, and 24p frame rates.

A fixed prime 18.3mm lens offers a comfortable 28mm equivalent wide-angle lens, which is complemented by a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. The optical construction incorporates six elements in four groups, including two aspherical elements that help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering. Two focusing modes also suit working with general subjects, from 3.9" to infinity, while a dedicated macro setting benefits working with close-up subjects within a 2.4-4.7" range. An internal two stop-effective (ND 0.6) filter is also available for either slowing the shutter speed or permitting working with a wider aperture setting, and the lens has a nine-blade diaphragm to contribute to a smooth bokeh quality. Additionally, the redeveloped lens design also results in greater contrast and measures 1.5mm thinner than previous GR/GR II digital cameras.

Featured for the first time in a GR camera, a 3-axis Shake Reduction System helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake in order to promote sharper handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds. The Shake Reduction System has been optimized for use with the built-in 28mm-equivalent lens, which renders it smaller and more effective. Additionally, the SR unit also offers moiré reduction and dust removal capabilities.

  • The hallmark feature of the GR-series has been its compact, pocketable size while still retaining a large image sensor and bright prime lens.
  • Integrated 3.0" 1.037m-dot LCD features a capacitive touchscreen design for intuitive, familiar operation during shooting, playback, and menu navigation.
  • The rear layout of the camera prioritizes a large, comfortable thumb grip along with easily accessible physical dials.
  • The ADJ lever, FN button, and Touch AF operations can be programmed to handle specific assignable functions for more personalized control.
  • Start-up time is just 0.8 seconds and Hybrid AF performance is quick for more seamless operation.
  • Integrated Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi afford wireless connectivity between the camera and a paired mobile device, and allows you to embed location info within your files as well as transfer files to your mobile device, even when the camera is turned off.
  • Included DB-110 rechargeable lithium-ion battery offers approximately 200 shots per charge.
  • USB-C port allows you to transfer files or recharge the battery in-camera.

[APS-C CMOS] I got this camera to take with me while hiking and mountain biking, and I could not be happier with it. The sharpness is excellent, and so are the colors, and the high ISO very usable, up to ISO 6400.
When I hike, I don't care to take all possible photos: all I want is to be able to take some, but great, photos. So I don't miss the lack of zoom of the GRIII; all I care is to come back with great photos of the places where I have been, so great that I can print large, or blow up on my large displays. The GRIII is perfect for that. And the lack of zoom has simplified my life; I know already what kind of photos it can take, and when I see an occasion, I take it out of my belt case, take the photo, and move on -- an accessory to my enjoyment of hiking, rather than a camera that wants to take control of my attention and of my hiking pace.

I take photos in RAW format, and I very much recommend SilkyPix; its color rendition is very good indeed with the Ricoh GRIII. You will need to create a preset that compensates for light fall-off. The quality of the RAW files is excellent.

Battery life is so so, but the camera uses very common batteries; I have 5-6 of them from my time with the Olympus XZ-2, so in practice this hasn't been an issue for me.

Better RAW files with better sharpness, a simpler life, and lightweight; what's not to like?

[f/2.8] The image quality is outstanding and the camera really does fit in my shirt pocket.

The screen is hard to see in bright sunlight but that seems to be true of every camera.

[1:1, 3:2] Ive had the Ricoh GR III for about 10 days now and Im most impressed with this little marvel. This camera has been labelled as the ultimate street camera but its much more than that. Its a beautiful, light, compact camera with a 24mp APS-C size sensor and a superb 28mm F2.8 lens. Ive used it indoors and outside, in good and bad light, and it has performed well beyond my expectations. The handling and menu system is easy to master and well laid out. You can set up buttons and short-cuts in ways that allow you to make changes on the fly without the need to dive in to the various menus.  People have commented about the sluggish AF and the poor battery life but I havent had any problem with either issues.  There is a firmware upgrade (v. 1.10) which improves the AF in low light and it does minimize the hunting for focus that some reviewers have mentioned. As for the battery life, yesterday I took over 300 shots and the battery still showed two bars (out of a possible three bars). You can turn off a few features (e.g. set review time to zero, turn AF light off, etc...) which will improve the battery life. I carry two extra batteries just in case and I havent had to use them yet.  The face detection works really well.  The crop mode is handy when needed. The B&W settings deliver some gorgeous B&W images. The macro mode lets you get incredibly close to your subject.  This camera is a technical gem but, more importantly, its such fun to use... I take it everywhere and that is its best feature...

[3.0"] Better sensor, as pocket-able as before, great lens, so completely customizable, this is a great camera with no competition in terms of size vs quality of image. If you are struggling with the auto focus speed is because you need to upgrade the firmware. New version is much better. Not the fastest animal but fast enough. Only miss the fill flash that was really great, but this one works much better in low light, very usable files at iso 4k. New lens is great, better than before and this is a huge compliment.

[1:1, 3:2] This camera provides such an amazing shooting experience. Purchased the GR II and then decided it was worth it to get the III and very happy I did. The new sensor's low light ability and IBIS make it much more usable for night photography, which was worth it for me. It's such an underrated camera. It makes me happy to shoot with, and even happier when I see the results. Shooting jpegs in Positive Film and the black and whites is a great experience, but when I need them the raw files are very flexible and have nice color in Lightroom. Never would've even thought about shooting jpeg with my Canons. No more lugging around my DSLRs on vacation. I have this camera in my pocket for daily situations when I normally wouldn't have had a camera on me, and it encourages me to shoot subjects I wouldn't normally feel worthy of pulling out the SLR for. Additionally, the form factor, understated design, and snap focus makes it a dream for street photography.

Overall, this camera is absolutely worth the money. Some may find it expensive looking at the specs, but this camera is worth so much more than the specs. It will make you love photography again, take more photos, and end up with more prints on your wall.

[DNG, JPEG] Great image maker. Lens is super sharp. Magnifications up to 8X hold together. Amazing! Even works quickly in low light when settings are on Auto. Came with latest updated firmware (1.2). Takes a few battery charges to apply detailed instruction manual settings. Extra battery and separate charger will cost you another $90. No Bluetooth, at least for iOS. Great customer support.

[DNG, JPEG] I was looking for a camera that was small enough to fit in my pocket but had enough power to take great pictures and this camera is perfect!

[1x Hot Shoe ] Not sure what they did but the sharpness and color are much better then the GR I. It also feels smaller and lighter. Love it.

[f/2.8] You can read about the GR III elsewhere, I'll just say it's surpassing my expectations & I had high hopes. Ibis & snap focus are wonderful & the menu system is great, lots of options to keep the camera quiet & blacked-out (can turn off the display, auto-review, focus light, etc). Back wheel on my sample bought DEC 2019 is solid as a rock. One minor quip w/this kit: the RG case is too long for the camera. I have the GV-2 viewfinder, and I can put that in the bottom of the case & the camera still fits easily. I can allllmost get the charger and the camera in the case, but nope. I was hoping for a more form fitting case.
