Tilt and pivot your camera in three-dimensional space with the Arca-Swiss d4 Tripod Head with Classic Knob Quick Release, which combines the advantages of a spherical head and a 3D tilt head in one compact system.

Small at only 4.3" high and 1.8 lb, yet comprising a 75 lb leverage weight capacity (which accounts for the added stress of a heavy lens) and unobtrusive yet functional controls, the d4 can be used on a tripod like a normal spherical head. When both X- and Y-axes are open, one can move the camera freely. But, in contrast to a spherical head, X- and Y-axis movements can also be made separately, one at a time. And, if one of these axes is fixed, movements can be performed with even more precision.

The design of this head puts the center of rotation of X and Y- tilts in the same place, making the pivoting radius of these movements very small, thus allowing users to maintain perspectives during readjustment. Also, a self-locking shock absorption feature for the swivel function allows for near total compensation of the camera's weight.

In addition to manual operation, the d4 also offers the precision of separate gear-driven vertical/horizontal movements when the locking levers are fixed, with quick release clutches for fast, large adjustments.

Another notable feature is the separate 360° panning devices at the top and at the base of the head. The bottom device allows for camera alignment, while the top device facilitates the performance of accurate panoramas and rotational stitching. Two spirit levels, arranged at 90° angles underneath the upper panorama adjustment, are sufficiently visible to facilitate effective leveling, even from a low viewpoint. This head is compatible with either classic Arca-Swiss-type or newer Arca-Swiss MonoballFix-type camera plates.

Q: 4. Can anyone tell me if there is a big difference (or what the difference is) between this model and the other two models that are $200+ more expensive. Worth the greater expense? thx

A: It's the same tripod head, except for the release clamp. The Monoball Quick fix version only accepts Arca's monoball quick fix plates. The other models accept the larger, standard Arca Swiss plates. If you're ok using the quick fix plates, or you intend to replace the release clamp for something like a Really Right Stuff lever release or screw clamp, then it is a much better value for essentially the same head.

Q: 5. Is it possible for me to remove the monoballFix clamp and attach my own pano clamp?thank you in advance.

A: Unfortunately, the MonoballFix clamp cannot be removed from the Arca-Swiss d4.

Q: 6. Can anyone explain the difference btw this model and the model that sells for $849? thanks.

A: The Arca-Swiss d4 Tripod Head with a Classic Knob Quick Release (Geared) B&H # ARD4QSCG MFR # 870103 uses a standard Arca-Swiss style plate. And the Arca-Swiss d4 Tripod Head with a MonoballFix Quick Release (Geared) B&H # ARD4MBFG MFR # 870105, uses the smaller plate specific for the Monballfix.

You will may have to reposition the tripod if you are shooting both horizontally and vertically.2. Use an L- plate on your camera then easily and quickly use the quick release to switch from horizontal to vertical in seconds without having to reposition the tripod.

Q: 9. Hi guys do you know if this can be used in a 3 legged thing tripod

[Ball Head] I really like the Arca-Swiss d4. It's a great geared tripod head as it's compact and doesn't weight too much. It's strong, smooth, and precise. It does cost a lot, but I think it's worth the money. I read some complaints about having the bubble levels on the side, however, I've found them to be very useful once I mount my camera on top.

I ended up sending my d4 out to Bob at Precision Camera Works to have the MonoballFix quick release (plate not included) replaced with a 60mm RRS B2-LR-II lever clamp, as I've fallen in love with the RRS system of clamps. Additionally, I mounted a RRS TH-DVTL-40 to the bottom so that I can quickly mount the d4 to different tripods using another B2-LR-II lever clamp. This allows me to attach and release the head from a lightweight tripod when I'm traveling, to something more hefty when in a studio environment. I do wish it came with some kind of case for my bag though.

Overall. I don't think anyone would mind owning the Arca-Swiss d4. Before it's operation, I did purchase a MonoballFix plate separately so I could try how the MonoballFix system. While I did enjoy it very much, I found that it would be better suited for smaller cameras. The RRS system just works better for me at the end of the day.

[2.77 lb] This is the best geared ball head available and is the most recommended by Architectural and Real Estate Photographers. Smooth and precise!

I have been using the Manfrotto 410 Geared head for over 6 years and the first thing that strikes me with the Arca-Swiss is the much smaller and lighter form factor with much smoother control.

I bought this in conjuction with the Sunwayfoto DDY-60p0 Discal Clamp for Arca heads and a Kirk BL-A9 L-Bracket for my Sony A7III. The Sunway clamp replaces the quick release clamp on top giving you an Arca connection to easily mount the L-clamp on the camera.

To finish the setup, I bought the lightest tripod with the Benro TAD27C Series 2 Adventure Carbon Fiber. This new setup is extremely light and makes shooting those homes much more enjoyable!

[Yes] I was initially concerned about the Quick Release option. Since I rarely change cameras/lenses, I like it and especially its small size/profile. The optional A-S Nikon DSLR plate works well too. This less expensive version is fine with me.

[Ball Head] At last I found the perfect tripod head for my landscape and architecture photography.
Until now I was using the RRS BH55 and BH40 with the RRS leveling base with my Gitzo GT5543LS and GT4553S and it was almost perfect. Now I got my D4 and change the lever release clamp with the RRS Lever Release Clamp and now I have the best geared tripod head.
