Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will a Cat 7 RJ45 Ethernet Cable give me 10Gbe if connected directly to one of my edit systems?

A: You can use either Cat6a or Cat7 for 10Gbe.

Q: 2. Is one of PCI slots occupied on the QNAP TVS-H874X-I9-64G or are both free?

A: Both M.2 slots in the QNAP TVS-h874X 8-Bay NAS Enclosure BH #QNTV874XI964 are available.

Q: 3. Can I use this enclosure by connecting My iMac directly through the USB C port?

A: Yes. You can connect QNAP TS-h973AX 9-Bay NAS Enclosure to your iMac using an usb-c to ethernet adapter

Q: 4. Will the thunderbolt 3 expansion card enable the QNAP TVS-H1688X to function as a DAS? Can I still daisy chain more storage?

A: The Thunderbolt ports on the The QNAP Dual-Port Thunderbolt 3 Expansion Card along with the QNAP TVS-H1688X can be connected to directly or used for expansion and daisy chaining.

Q: 5. Do you have to add all the drives at once or can you add to bays as needed. (Do they have to be the same size hdds?)

A: All the drives do not need to be added at once for the NAS Enclosure, depending on how the RAID is configured. The enclosure has twelve 3.5" and four 2.5" sized bays for drives.

Q: 6. What is the largest hard drive supported for each bay of this enclosure?

A: There is no drive size limit on this QNAP TVS-h874X 8-Bay NAS Enclosure.

Q: 7. Can you connect this device to your main computer using TB3 and still have a remote computer access the drives through the Internet ports?

A: This NAS server also acts as a DAS (direct attached storage) when connected to the Thunderbolt 3 port. You will connect this NAS server to your network via the Ethernet port, to connect remotely with it. When you're next to your NAS server, you can connect to it via the Thunderbolt 3 port for a faster transfer rate.

Q: 8. Which QNAP bay expansion enclosure is this compatible with?

A: I would recommend the TR-004 (BH #QNTR004US) or TR-002 (B&H # QNTR002US) as expansion options for the QNAP TVS-472XT.

Q: 9. What is the maximum storage size for this unit?

A: QNAP has tested up to 18TB hard drives currently.

Q: 10. Can I connect a ProGrade Digital Dual-Slot UHS-II SDXC USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C Card Reader to the type c port on the rear of this unit and copy files directly to the hard drive?

A: Yes, this will work as the card reader is not in any way software dependent and will mount the volume as any other USBC storage volume would mount.

[12.63 lb] I am using this NAS for home use. I originally was going to get the h1288x but if you upgrade the RAM from 16gb to 32gb on the h1288x it's actually more than just getting this h1688x to start with, so I got this with all the extra bays. I really wanted the smaller form factor of the 1288x but it seemed silly to pay more for the smaller NAS (after upgrading the RAM).

This NAS is working fantastically so far. I set this up on ZFS and it does use about 1/3 of the RAM as overhead for the ZFS file system, but no complaints or issues getting everything up and running. I filled up only half of the bays and loaded up 2 samsung SSDs for read caching. The transfer speed on the 10g into my 10g switch has been a huge upgrade compared the the previous 1G NAS I had.

Additionally, I immediately set up several docker containers and various VMs for gaming and other purposes. This is where the additional RAM has been great. Compared to using Synology I like the QNAP interface as it is more similar to running a Windows PC.

Overall I would highly recommend.

[Intel AtomC3558] I searched and researched for the perfect NAS unit. I finally settled on the QNAP TS-1655 because of unlimited options of future upgrades like maxing out the RAM memory to 128 GBs, the 2 M.2 hard drive ports you can designate to the system cache, not to mention the 16 hard drive bays. I already added 2
Samsung 1TB 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2Samsung and 64GB of RAM memory with plans to add 2 more to max out the four memory slots on the QNAP TS-1655 16-Bay NAS Enclosure. I am very happy with this purchase.

[280.00 W (Max)] Recommended by my IT guy. I bought what he told me to buy. The whole NAS thing was new to me. Once I found the right path to archiving my files, I have been quite happy with the functionality. One thing: I bought two fast solid state drives that go in the first slot of the QNAP. The rest of the slots have slower drives for long term archiving. I NEVER use the fast drives. I have found it's still much faster to work using the computer's built in drive, and then store on the slow drives when I'm done.

[8 GB] Using with Crucial 1Tb drives in RAID 5 and hitting 1.2Gb read for my home virtualization environment. I have older QNAPs that just keep running without failure.

[Yes] This thing is replacing my TS 653 eventually. It is whisper quiet sitting right beside me. It is a faster Celeron than the 653 and it uses metal trays instead of plastic brackets. It gives my system a nice look. One thing all should be aware of is that the holes for the rack mount are smaller than the regular rack screws so keep that in mind. I didn't increase the memory as I bought the 8 GB model, and I love the B&H Payboo Card which saves money.

[8 GB] I have used this 16-Bay QNAP model for over a year now and it has been the most reliable storage system I have ever experienced. While other drives like SanDisk G-Raids often give me trouble, the QNAP has remained solid, fast, and reliable.

I also love the design of the QNAP. It is beautifully put together, which adds a layer of class to my equipment rack.

FYI, I use it with a beefy PC, Windows 11 Pro, 10g Ethernet connection. Running around 180 TB in QNAP.

[200 W] This is a great unit, new NAS for me and it was super easy to setup and transfer videos and other storage items that I have on other NASs.

I have populated both M.2 with NVME 980 Pros, 4 SSDs and 8 12 Tb Iron Wolf Pro drives. All were installed with out using screws and just the drive sleds.

Its fast and easy to set up shares and limit access to those files if needed.

[280.00 W (Max)] This is my second QNAP NAS. I had a major hardware failure on my first one and it was sadly far outside of its warranty period. Despite being out of warranty, QNAP support was very quick to help and assisted me in creating a plan to migrate to new hardware. When my new NAS arrived, the migration of my existing drives took a fair bit of work, but QNAP support stuck with me until everything was 100% perfect. This ultimately ended up requiring them to login into my NAS and taking on the task themselves to the tune of a couple of hours of work on their part.

Like I said, great hardware, excellent support!

[32K] This is my second qnap unit and it is great. Super simple to setup. So far the i7 has taken everything I've thrown at it and hasn't even broken a sweat.

[Internal] I have been waiting for this for so long. Lots of drives, lots of power, BUT it is quiet. It isn't built for a server rack with huge fans that are so loud a person can't comfortably work in the same room. It is about 15 feet away from me in my main color suite and I don't notice it.

I have multiple computers working off it at the same time and have no problems at all. My color computer has 2x 10G ethernet connections to it so I realistically get about 1900GB/s to it read and write. Plenty for Sony X-OCN or Arri Raw.

Full of 22TB drives so I have about 198TB after formatting in RAID6.
