Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If I install 6 22TB drives and use Raid 5, how much unique data can I store?

A: When using the QNAP TS-664 6-Bay NAS Enclosure with six 22TB drives, in RAID 5, you would have 110TB of actual storage.

Q: 2. Is this the 8gb model or the 4gb model that supports Ram upgrades. The site's webpage says this is the 8gb model, but not worker?

A: This QNAP TS-664 6-Bay NAS Enclosure has 8 GB of RAM preinstalled.

Q: 3. What is the maximum supported capacity of a drive to be put inside the enclosure?

A: It will support 16TB drives.

Q: 4. What are the drive limitations? What size capacity does the unit recommend?

A: The QNAP TS-1232PXU-RP-4G 12-Bay NAS Enclosure, B&H # QNTS1232PXU4, supports up to 24TB 3.5'' hard drives at the time of this message. For a full list of the drives compatible with the QNAP TS-1232PXU-RP-4G, please visit the compatibility list provided by QNAP on the link below. https://bhpho.to/3MLTjPV

Q: 5. Is this one able to upgrade ram or the soldered?

A: Yes, the RAM is upgradable on this QNAP TS-664 6-Bay NAS Enclosure. see also pg. 35 of the user manual: https://bit.ly/48DKTU6

Q: 6. I see suggestions for Q-nap expansion cards, but on the back of the TS-h973AX I don't see any place to put them. Is there an ability to expand some capabilities internals or does this not support expansion cards?

A: Unfortunately, the QNAP TS-h973AX 9-Bay NAS Enclosure does not support extension cards.

Q: 7. Is there a maximum size drive that this enclosure is compatible with? I have 2 12TB 3.5" drives.. would those work?

A: The maximum size drive of the QNAP TS-433 4-Bay NAS Enclosure is 22TB per bay.

Q: 8. Does the fan run continuously or does it only turn on when the unit gets too warm?

A: The fan on the QNAP TS-433 4-Bay NAS is on continuously to maintain stable temps.

Q: 9. Could you please confirm that this doesn't support Raid 5?

A: The QNAP TS-216G 2-Bay NAS Enclosure does not support RAID 5 and is only capable of RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD. Only enclosures with three or more bays (and a minimum of three drives installed) can support RAID 5.

Q: 10. Can the 2 x M.2 NVMe SSD drives be included in a Raid configuration such as 2 x M.2 NVMe 4tb SSD's plus 4 x 4tb 2.5" SSD's?

A: If you install M.2 NVMe SSD drives into the QNAP TS-435XeU 4-Bay NAS Enclosure, they could not be included in a RAID configuration per se—they would be used as cache in conjunction with a RAID array.

[256-Bit AES] A solid choice for personal cloud storage, and with a lot of extra apps and features that can integrate with smartphones as well as computers. The SSD option does seem to speed up the access for frequently used files, and the newer CPU is better suited to this device's role than in previous models.

[256-Bit AES] I really like have all my files in one place. Having the four drives is really nice, and the M2.NVME slot's are a bonus. Having a SFP port in the back is great! 10gb transfer speeds are awesome!

[256-Bit AES] My old PR4100 NAS was way past its prime and needed to be retired fast. I researched the QNAP TS-464 and decided it would suit my needs. I was amazed how fast my data (+/- 150GB) was copied from the old to the new NAS. (across a 1G connection) The ability to see the network traffic across the pair of NIC's that I used to connect to my router was a bonus. The QNAP Apps available both free and licensed opened up a new capability that I did not have on my old WD device. Money well spent and I am just getting started with my data safe on this QNAP machine.

[2x 70 mm Fans] I bought a pair of QNAPs: TS-451 and TS-431 back in 2015. I wanted to replace the -431 because its 32-bit ARM CPU couldn't run the convenient Tailscale VPN I wanted to use to access it remotely. Then my -451 developed a hardware issue that I was able to repair but which made me nervous about its longevity. So I purchased the -464, moved the drives from the -451 to it, and was back on the air. The repaired -451, with new drives, will soon move to a remote location, accessed via Tailscale. The -464 is a nice upgrade: faster CPU, tool-less disk installation, less cluttered styling.

[31.975 lb] Works as advertised. Supports VAAI storage primitives iSCSI and NFS. Easy to configure and using QuTs Hero with ZFS. Excellent performance and flexibility, as well as dedupe and compression with external cloud storage providers as replication targets. Ordered U.2 - 2xNVMe trays and have 8TB of NVMe RAID0 across 4 PCIe lanes for massive cache performance. Easily maxxed out the system RAM to 64GB using non-ECC DIMMs works great even without using QNAP provided RAM. 10Gbe networking bonded with the 2x2.5Gbe ports for 15Gbe trunked to commodity switch is fantastic. Five 7200rpm x 18TB HDD, 4xNVMe 2TB and 2x4TB SSD for 11 total drives and 106TB raw storage even only using 9 bays. This thing is incredible for a home lab setup for vSphere.

[256-Bit AES] This thing is replacing my TS 653 eventually. It is whisper quiet sitting right beside me. It is a faster Celeron than the 653 and it uses metal trays instead of plastic brackets. It gives my system a nice look. One thing all should be aware of is that the holes for the rack mount are smaller than the regular rack screws so keep that in mind. I didn't increase the memory as I bought the 8 GB model, and I love the B&H Payboo Card which saves money.

[Yes] This is a great enclosure for anyone who's looking for a raid system to protect client footage. I can edit my 6k & 8k footage straight from the drives without proxies.

[Yes] Great unit for a home rack with only 12 depth. I'd recommend rails though even if the unit is not that heavy.

After an initial fan spinup very quiet, even if heavily used. It's in a closet in a family room and is not audible at all in the room.

Using it with 10Gbit Fiber SFP and one of the integrated 2.5 Gbit interfaces.
Great performance, 200MB/s write, 250MB/s read with NVMe M.2 SSD modules.

Also great for security cameras, includes a license for up to 8 cameras. Running 6 cameras with ~20% CPU load.

A few minor issues:
- Could not get it running with Ethernet SFP modules (tried various), but rock solid with the fiber modules. But given that they consume less power/produce less heat anyway no real issue for me.
- It would be nice if they included M.2 SSD heatsinks.

[2x 70 mm Fans] Just put into service, so far so good. This is our second QNAP NAS. First NAS was a TS-469 Pro that has been online 24-7 with original WD2000FYYZ drives since 2013. Hope the TS-453E has the same longevity.

[31.975 lb] I needed to upgrade from an older Western Digital NAS to something with more bays. I landed on this QNAP and I am pretty happy with it as it allows me to have more drives AND is somewhat more powerful. It seems a bit more complex but I have called the good people at QNAP tech support on numerous occasions and they have been very accommodating. They even helped me set up an rsync event (is that what it is? an event?) that allowed me to copy the data from my WD to my QNAP. It was so much faster than having my computer negotiate that transfer. So far so good.
