The Cavision 4x5.65" Hot Mirror Filterincorporates a dielectric mirror within the filter to combat infrared light pollution that becomes noticeable when making long exposures with a digital camera. This situation is also naturally prevalent when photographing near strong sources of infrared, such as fires and at sunset. The hot mirror filter effectively cuts out infrared wavelengths but does not interfere with visible red wavelengths. This filter measures 4 x 5.65" / 101.6 x 143.5mm and is constructed from 30-layer coated optical glass.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this be used with Meade LX-90 12 telescope ?

A: Yes. You will need a 2 Schmidt-threaded visual back though. Most SCTs come with a 1.25

Q: 2. What does it means that this filter " designed for lenses with focal lengths of 70mm or less. " Is ther any harm in using it with long telephoto lenses? Will it harm the image quality?

A: Anything above 70mm we don't recommend using the Circular Polarizer because you may not be able to achieve focus.

Q: 3. Hello,I am not sure about this square filter - is it necessary filter to be rotated as we use round circular polarizer filters?Or this filter stays still in horizontal position only?Thank you.Best regards,Rado

A: Yes, a square circular polarizing filter will still need to be rotated just like a round one. To rotate this filter, you will need a specialized matte box that has a rotating filter stage. The 6 x 6 Universal Matte Box Package from Cavision: http://bhpho.to/JYrd2j

Q: 4. Will this work with a Canon EOS T100 with the T-mount adapter for EF/EF-S mounts? I notice it's pretty large and I'm wondering if the flash protrusion which sticks out about 9/16 of an inch on the T100 would interfere with this fitting correctly.

A: Yes it will fit the T100. It is manual focus only and your camera will only work in manual or aperture priority exposure modes.

Q: 5. Will the Opteka 500mm F/6.3 lens work with a crop sensor camera? Specifically, I have a Nikon DX camera (D7100).

A: Mine works fine with my Canon T3i with crop sensor. It may not cover a full frame sensor, but crop size is fine. I find my Opteka 500mm very easy to use and focus and resolution are better than expected.

Q: 6. Is it me or is the textprinted on the wrong (back) side of the filter? Circular pols only work one direction (not an issue when its in a threaded mount but this is reversible) and when I use this one in the correct way the writing on the glass faces the back. Anyone else notice this?

A: The word text u mean the numbers written on the filter. Stil i didnt notice it but its working perfectly for me. I dont think its printing mistake

Q: 7. Will this 4mmm thick filter fit in the Lee Foundation Kit filter holder?

A: You would need to purchase the LEE Filters Side Guides for 4mm Thick Filters, B&H # LESG4, to use 4mm filters with the LEE Filters Foundation Kit Filter Holder. http://bhpho.to/1iXS5y5

Q: 8. Does this lens have any noticeable comatic aberration?

A: We have not heard of any noticeable chromatic aberration with this lens to date.

Q: 9. Is this the Pro 2 version? The picture shows Pro 2, but the description doesn't. THanks

A: Yes. The Kolari Vision UV/IR Cut Hot Mirror Magnetic Clip-in Filter for Sony E-Mount Full-Frame Cameras is the newer Pro 2 version.

Q: 10. Is this compatible with the RED Komodo-X?

A: Yes, the Kolari Vision Magnetic Clip-In Filter for RED KOMODO (UV/IR Cut Hot Mirror) is compatible with the RED DIGITAL CINEMA KOMODO-X 6K Digital Cinema Camera.

[IR Control Only] Does what it is suppose to. Blocks Infrared on my UV/IR camera so I can take regular pictures. I also us it with my B&W 403 to let only the UV light pass.

[Multi Coated] I had my Sony DSC-R1 camera modified for taking pictures in Infrared light. Rather than having the visible light blocking filter replace the original hot mirror filter in front of the sensor, I had it replaced by glass transparent to IR through UV. This way I can use the camera for normal photography as well as IR and UV. My only problem is that the Tiffen Hot Mirror filter that I bought to be able to take color photos in visible light has no blue tinge, as do all the sensor hot mirror filters I've ever seen. This means that my color balance is shifted to the tungsten side. I had to do a white balance in manual mode on the camera because I can't adjust white balance in Auto, where I admittedly do much of my shooting. Not a BIG problem, but an unexpected one. Otherwise, it's great!

[IR Control Only] I use this on a Red Epic when shooting on bright sunny days when I want to keep my lens open for beautiful shallow depth of field. The IR filter keeps IR light from muddying up the shadows and keeps my blacks black. When its sunny you want to avoid stacking filters as much as possible.

[8 x 7.5 x 1.1"] The matte box has performed exactly as expected. It's being used in conjunction with a Sony VCL-HG0872 wide angle lens on a Sony FX1. I also purchased a RS15IIM (250) rod support system.

[Multi Coated] I purchased this filter recently and used it yesterday for the first time. I have many filters and primarily use B+W filters for long exposure landscape photography and I shoot in RAW. I use a 24mm prime lens and 52mm screw on filters. I love the build quality of B+W filters, but it my experience they tend to have a brownish / sepia cast. This is, of course, easily fixed in post processing. Back to Tiffen's product. This filter is slightly more expensive compared to B+W's ND filters. The build quality is slightly lower than B+W's, but it is not cheap feeling or flimsy by any means. The RAW images had no color cast and needed no color correction. I was able to capture a two-minute exposure during a sunset and I was extremely happy with the result. When researching this product, I was unable to find many reviews. The few that I found stated that it is possible to auto focus with the filter in place and I was eager to test this. I frequently do a clumsy dance of focusing, turning auto focus off and screwing on the filter while hoping not to mistakenly adjust the focus. I discovered that you can use auto focus with the filter, to an extent. You must be in very bright light, but it is possible. For the TL; DR summary: expensive, no color cast and you can auto focus in bright light! Great filter!
