The Tiffen 67mm Double Fog 3 Filter - Photography Accessorysimulates the effects of natural fog or mist by creating a soft glow around highlights and lowering the overall contrast of the scene. When compared to the standard Fog filter, this filter places greater emphasis on lowering the contrast while maintaining sharpness and minimizing the effects of flare. The 3 density provides a noticeable amount of fog effect and requires no exposure compensation.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How many stops of light does this cut from the frame?

A: 1/3 stop of light loss

Q: 2. Is the Tiffen Circular Polarizing filter in the Tiffen 67DIGEK3 kit the same as the Tiffen 67CP Circular Polarizing filter? If not, which is the better quality?

A: Yes it includes the 67CP filter.

Q: 3. does it have HT coating on lens?

A: This filter is not coated.

Q: 4. is this a variable filter?

A: No, the Tiffen 67mm 6pt/2mm Grid Star Effect Filter is not a variable neutral density filter. The Tiffen 67mm 6pt/2mm Grid Star Effect Filter is designed to create multiple stars that appear to streak outward from the center of bright light sources in your scene. It does not vary the density of light entering the camera and cannot be adjusted, though you may rotate the filter to rotate the direction of the stars that are created by the filter.

Q: 5. Would it make sense to use these filters on a digital camera shooting in B&W mode? I experimented holding up a red filter from my old B&W film days on a Sony pocket camera and the results looked promising. Now I have a Canon SX50HS and would like to get screw-on filters but think when I learn how to use it better there may be a way to filter it internally. Would a polarizer do basically the same thing?

A: While it is entirely possible to use these filters with a DSLR in b+w mode, it will not be the same as shooting black and white film, as a digital camera shoots in RGB and then converts to a black and white profile. If you do choose to use these filters with a DSLR shooting in black and white, you will need to set a custom white balance as well, as the camera will see the green/red/yellow and try to correct for them in auto white balance or other preset white balance modes. Additionally, another option you can try is to shoot your images in RGB mode, and then in post production, particularly in Adobe Photoshop, add a B&W layer or a Channel Mixer layer to obtain a more accurate black and white image. A circular polarizer will work as well.

Q: 6. What's the difference between double fog 3, and just regular double fog, strength of effect?

A: Tiffen Double Fog comes in various strengths. The higher the number, the stronger the effect. Double Fog 3 is the strongest strength.

Q: 7. I have a Polarizer filter , do I need a Graduated HD filter for high contrast photos?

A: The graduated HD filter is often used to mitigate bright sky against a darker landscape. I sometimes use it in other orientations to cut down bright areas of photo I am taking - imagine taking a photo of a dark building where the bright area has a vertical orientation on the left or right, or taking a photo through a door or similar portal. On the other hand, while a polarizer might provide some general overall brightness reduction, it is generally used to emphasize darker areas that are located at right angles to the light source (such as darkening sky against the clouds in a band 90 degrees from the sun), or to eliminate or reduce glare from reflected light - light reflected from smooth surfaces is highly polarized, light reflected from rough surfaces, such as the ocean, is rather scattered and the glare can be only minimally reduced by a polarizer. So the functions are different, and the graduated filter reduces the contrast (although I guess it could be used to exaggerate the contrast) whereas the polarizer is often used to enhance contrast.

Q: 8. Does it fit on 67mm?

A: The filter size is "Filter Wheel 3", this is for a drop in system and is not 67mm. To find 67mm Tiffen Fog filters search the B&H website for "Tiffen 67mm Fog"

Q: 9. What are performance differences between this filter and Tiffen Haze 2A filter

A: The Haze 2A filter http://bhpho.to/1zc5mqJ will absorb virtually all UV light, whereas the UV Haze 86 will absorb 86% of UV light. The UV Haze 86 features a Digital HT Multi-Coating, which provides strength, durability and optical clarity.

[0.165 lb] I purchased this Double Fog 3 filter for astrophotography using a wide and fast lens. I have not used the filter yet, other than to screw it on the camera lens, but have read many reviews on astrophotography sites that recommend this exactly filter to accentuate the brighter stars in the sky for a more interesting photo. B&H shipped this piece quickly and with great packaging care. I inspected the filter and it appears perfect.

[67 mm] A fellow bugshutter happens to live in an area with a lot of morning fog and cranks out great landscapes thereupon. I've tried everything short of axle grease on a clear filter to get the same effect, as it's not often foggy in Western, PA and there are tons of landscapes that would look great with it.

Researching effects filters, I cam upon this baby and it seems to do the job pretty well--particularly with images and subjects under infinity. It won't completely replicate a foggy day, but if you don't want to pay for fog-effect plug-ins for you image management software, it's a great way to go.

Doubles as portrait diffuser as well. Worth a look for the digital camera user. And it's a Tiffen--my own go-to for 40 years.

[67 mm] I'll be using this filter in a feature film we'll be shooting in about a month. It does exactly what Tiffen said it would do in their description. In our test shots it created a very nice fog effect. If you where to be shooting with any type of breeze you would have problems using a traditional fog machine. However with the fog filter you don't have to worry about the fog being blown away. Great effect.

[67 mm] Very durable, effective filter that produces a clear, soft image--even on a cloudy, non-foggy day.
