Spanning a versatile zoom range and characterized by its bright design, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Sony E Lensis a 25.5-105mm-equivalent lens for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. The wide to short-tele range is ideal for everyday shooting and the fast f/2.8 constant maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and offers improved control over depth of field. Complementing this design is a series of specialized optics, including aspherical and low dispersion elements, that produce well-corrected imagery with high sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. Individual elements also feature Tamron's BBAR coating, which suppresses flare and ghosting for greater contrast when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions.

Adding to the versatility of the zoom design is a Vibration Compensation image stabilization system, which reduces the appearance of camera shake for steadier photo and video recording in low-light conditions. Also benefitting handling, an RXD stepping motor enables quick, near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override and a minimum focusing distance of 7.5". Suiting this lens's use in inclement weather conditions, it also features a moisture-resistant construction along with a fluorine-coated front element to protect against fingerprints and smudging.

Versatile zoom is designed for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and covers wide-angle to short-telephoto fields of view with its 25.5-105mm equivalent focal length range.

Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent brightness throughout the zoom range and offers improved control over depth of field.

Two molded glass aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element help to correct distortion and spherical aberrations to achieve a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.

Two LD (Low Dispersion) elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to realize improved clarity and color accuracy.

BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting to achieve greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor delivers impressively quiet, quick, and smooth focusing performance to suit both stills and video applications. This focusing system also offers a minimum focusing distance of just 7.5" and a 1:4.8 maximum magnification for working with close-up subjects. Full-time manual focus override is also possible, and it is compatible with Sony's Direct Manual Focus function or fine-tuned manual control.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions.

A moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Would this work on Sony e-mount full-frame cameras?

A: It will physically fit, but it is not a full frame lens, so it is not advised to use it on a full frame Sony E mount camera.

Q: 2. Will this lens work on fs5? Is it parfocal?

A: This is an APS-C format E-mount lens meant for Sony cameras, and should mount without issue on an FS5. Based on the FS5 sensor size (23.6 x 13.3mm), it should also more than adequately cover the Super35 sensor. Unfortunately, it is not parfocal.

Q: 3. Would this work with Sony a7 iii? Would there be any cropping with the full frame?

A: It will mount, but crop your sensor to APS-C size OR vignette, depending on what your Super35/APS-C settings are.

Q: 4. Is this lens weather resistant in terms of rain and dust?

A: Yes the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for FUJIFILM is weather sealed.

Q: 5. how do you change aperture with this lens not having an aperture ring?

A: You would need to use the camera to set the aperture using the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for FUJIFILM.

Q: 6. Is this internal zoom or if used on a gimbal will the gimbal need rebalancing when focal length is changed?

A: Even with internal-zoom lenses, the center of mass/gravity might change because the internal elements might have shifted forward or back. Always power down your gimbal before zooming to check.

Q: 7. will this lens perform auto focus continuously for doing video with sony zv-E10 camera ?

A: Yes, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for Sony E maintains tracking focus and subject detection while shooting video mode in the Sony ZV-E10 Mirrorless Camera.

Q: 8. Can you turn the lens stabilization off? I don’t see an on/off switch for the VC.

A: The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for Sony E has no switch to turn off the image stabilization.

Q: 9. Will the zoom function works for this lens with Sony FX30 zoom rocker button?

A: Unfortunately no. The Tamron 17-70mm lens is not a power zoom lens and therefore not supported by the zoom rocker on the FX30.

Q: 10. Does this lens have any USB inputs? How do you do a firmware update on this lens?

A: The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Lens for Sony E does not have any current firmware updates. If Tamron releases a firmware update for this lens, you can perform the firmware update through the camera body. [Yes] I bought the 17-70 a few weeks ago and I am really in love with this lens, the focal range is super dynamic and works for many scenarios.

The only defect is that after 50 mm it loses a bit of sharp is very discreet, but if you are very fussy, I recommend checking some reviews.

For my and my kind of work, it's perfect

[APS-C] I've had this lens for 3 years now and it has been my go-to for 90% of my photography.

The lens is really sharp even when fully open and can create some spectacular images. It has a really useful range of focal lengths, and is ideal for traveling.

The bokeh is not the best in the world, but it is still pretty good for a zoom.

Sony makes a similar and slightly better product - the 16-55mm G, but you'll have to pay twice as much for it. For me that wasn't worth the money, but is definitely worth considering if you can afford it.

[f/16] Note to Adobe users - UPDATE your software. There is a known bug with this lens and the X-T4 that doesn't apply lens corrections properly. Nearly ruined every image of my vacation!

Once updated the images refreshed and they were all perfect. Fell in love with this lens all over again.

[Autofocus] The Fuji 16-55mm has a better build and is probably slightly sharper, but it does not have OIS and it is a lot more expensive. If you are looking for a mid-range zoom for your Fuji-X body, this is really a no-brainer.

[APS-C] IT is very sharp and the auto focus is speedy, highly recommend it for Fuji X-H2 camera

[9, Rounded] Love the f2.8, love its handling. Don't like the size and weight, but that's the price paid for quality.

[67 mm (Front)] Fantastic lens, specially for the price. It allows me to do more with just one camera (because of the reach and f2.8 max aperture). As a videographer/photographer I always relied on a second body with a longer lens in case I needed more reach right away. Now I can leave my second camera in the bag just as a backup!

Used on my Fujifilm X-T4 as well as X-s10, and it worked perfectly. Yes, Fujis 16-80 has more reach and is marginally better, but it's max aperture of f4 limits the low light usage. On the other hand, Fujis venerable 16 - 55 is f2.8, but it lack stabilization, has way shorter reach and costs 50% more. To me this lens gives me the best of both at a very good price. It's a win-win-win!!!

[f/2.8] I am really impressed with the color rendition and sharpness of this lens. I bought this from B&H to use it with Sony-ZV-E10. Although its APS-C format, last weekend i did coverage of dance recital alongwith other sony camcorders : pxw-x70 (which has 1 inch sensor and zeiss lens). The picture quality is so good. I will be buying another Tamron lens with more zoom and f2.8.
