The Tiffen Black Pro-Mist 1 Filter 6.6" x 6.6"helps to reduce the value of the highlights while slightly lowering the overall contrast. This filter is especially useful for smoothing out and softening facial wrinkles and other blemishes. While designed for use with movies, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or soft focus filter, Pro-Mist filters provide little loss of detail across the image. The 1 density provides a subtle amount of contrast and highlight reduction and allows for a soft, pastel-like quality of light.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 6.6 x 6.6" / 167.6 x 167.6mm.

[0.85 lb] Great filter when used indoors or dark spaces with spotty lights. Gives a film-like glow to highlights and softens edges without losing focus. May be a little much for outdoor use though. 5

[0.85 lb] Black satin is one of my favorite diffusion filters and I think it looks great with digital sensors. It will bloom the highlights so you need to be careful in that regard but I think the black satin does a good job of not smearing the image too much while making skin look smoother. I would recommend taking a look at the sample footage from Tiffen before using to get an idea of how the filter affects the image. The only thing I would say is I wish B&H had the 1/2 black satin available in the store as well so that people could actually compare the product before buying. 5

[0.85 lb] I was looking for a super subtle diffusion filter; something that wouldn't result in overly glowy imagery. A borrowed 1/4 Promist and 1/4 Black Promist were both too extreme for my taste so I took a chance on this, and found it to be exactly what I was looking for. The diffusion is barely noticeable in most cases but very over exposed areas and fleeting specular highlights produce a beautiful, subtle bloom that's really wonderful. 5

[0.85 lb] it takes the digital sharpness of the skin and blooms out chromatic aberration in the lens highlight and the glow is consistent not over powering the image. i like to sometime think of it as my digital make up. 5

[0.85 lb] I love this filter! It has a slightly warm and rich look to it. It takes the sharp digital edge off but doesn't reduce contrast and bloom highlights as much of as a black promist does. This is subtle and classy. 5

[0.85 lb] This filter simply expands the camera’s dynamic range with 1 full stop in the highlights area. It affects in this way only the values that are one stop brighter than 18% gray, that is, brighter than caucasian skin. The skin and all other exposure zones darker will retain their own values. This is the reason why I keep using this filter even for outdoor nature shots, even if the producer recomends it mainly for portraits. For portraits it’s simple a must: contrasts are more pleasing and natural on the skin while the focus and sharpness is almost the same as it was before mounting the filter. I never made any portrait without this filter since I’ve discovered it, regardless of the position of the light in relation with camera, time of the day, or artistic lightning effect. 5
