Ultra-wide prime is designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras but can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 21mm equivalent focal length.

Two aspherical elements and one ultra-high refractive index glass element help to control distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

Three extra-low dispersion elements are used to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce high clarity and color accuracy.

Impressively wide 114° angle of view pairs with a rectilinear design, which renders subjects with minimal distortion in order to suit landscape and architectural applications.

Manual focusing design and a minimum focusing distance of 10.6" suits working with close-up subjects.

Built-in petal-shaped lens hood helps to prevent stray light from causing lens flare and also offers some physical protection to the lens's front element.

Front of the lens is threaded to accept optional 52mm filters. The lens is also compatible with an optional, dedicated 100mm filter holder.

Five-blade diaphragm produces distinct 10-point sun stars and specular highlights when stopped-down and photographing point light sources.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. given that the lens hood is built in, would a 55mm filter with a 52-55 step ring fit?

A: It wouldn't fit due to the lens hood unfortunately.

Q: 2. Is the len hood detachable? Can I use a generic 100mm square filter holder with generic 100m sqaure filter on it? Thanks.

A: The petal-shaped lens hood is built-in, not removable, and not reversible. Unfortunately, this means generic or third-party filter holders won't work. Laowa has a magnetic filter system for the lens coming soon, and it seems that will be the only way to get 4x4" or 4x5.65" size filters to work with the lens.

Q: 3. Will the Lee 100 Filter system work with this lens?

A: Yes. But the following is needed in order to do so. LEE Filters 52mm Wide-Angle Lens Adapter Ring for 100mm System Filter Holder BH #LEARWA52 • MFR #WAR052 https://bhpho.to/39y1yzi

Q: 4. Laowa makes a custom filter holder for this lens. Can I purchase it at B &H?

A: Sorry , we don't sell it

Q: 5. Does this lens have hard stops? MY other question is how much is the diameter of the focus ring to put an exact focus gear ring on it?

A: Yes, Following unit offers hard stops. Dimensions, ‎2.95 x 2.85 x 2.85 inches

Q: 6. I saw a review of a pre-production version of this lens. On that one the flange was milled for 6-bit coding. Is that the case with this one?

A: According to Venus Labs, they state that the Venus Optics Laowa 9mm f/5.6 FF RL Lens for Leica M is 6-bit coded for metadata usage on Leica camera. They also state that they coded the lens based on the Leica system. There is no customized Laowa coding. As a result, you should memorize the amended name of the lens designation.

Q: 7. Is this lens compatible with Leica CL (APS-C format)?

A: Yes it is compatible!

Q: 8. what is the country of manufacture?

A: COUNTRY OF ORIGIN CHINA

Q: 9. Is this lens weather-sealed?

A: No, the Venus Optics Laowa Argus 45mm f/0.95 does not offer weather sealing.

Q: 10. Canon R5 will not fire with this lens. What camera settings are necessary to be able to use this lens?

A: The camera must be in manual exposure mode and 'release shutter without lens' should be set so this lens can be used.

[14mm] The r5 makes manual focus so incredibly easy, I can confidently capture bride groom portraits with ease and know they're in focus. The bokeh has a vintage reminiscence to it which I absolutely love

[52 mm (Front)] If you are not looking for perfection at this price, but a special way of rendering the world, you have a winner with this lens.
I take any chance to slow down and to become more creative.

[1.23 lb] This lens is surprisingly sharp and very tiny. Color rendering is great, as is 3D pop. The only downsides are a thin focus ring (take care to keep your fingers out of the shot), and fairly substantial vignetting (which I actually like, as it provides sone character to the images, but easily fixed in Lightroom). Someone here said it was difficult to focus — but that problem is also easily solved. Just activate focus in peaking in your camera’s viewfinder. The best $300 I have ever spent on a camera lens. So much fun.

[Full-Frame] The Laowa 10mm F4 is a great little lens. Well built, pretty sharp, very well corrected for distortion, and impressively tiny. You could complain about the rather pronounced vignetting at wide apertures, or the lack of critical sharpness in the extreme corners, these are real issues. Or you could marvel at how absolutely tiny this lens is, how little distortion it has, how well built it is, how useful for creative composition it's close focus capabilities are, and how you didn't have to spend a lot of money to get such a handy ultra-wide on your APSc camera (Fuji-X in my case). A great tool that's easy to keep with you at all times and easy to appreciate despite its minor failings.

[114°] Not for everyone, as they say, but surprisingly good for the price for what it is. If you want it for super thin depth of field and creamy smooth bokeh you may be happy. Stopped down, sharpness is good, especially in the center. Works very well for urban scenes at night as well and keeps the ISO down. At the current price of $650 I'm very pleased, but at list of $999 maybe less so. If you want an all around 35mm there are better choices, mostly slower by a stop or more, but then with AF or at greater expense. Beautifully built as well.

[Full-Frame] Get Those WAPs ( wide angle photos ) This is my first laowa Lens and I am not Disappointed. From all of the testing I've Done all the edges are straight and legit no Distortion on this bad boy. at f/4 there is slight vignetting but disappears at f/5.6, IF you're like me and using this for Real Estate this is the lens for you on Photos, f/4 for Video is a little low for Aperture in Video but if you're using a Full Frame System you should be able to push your ISO a bit more in low light situations but maybe not the best lens for Small Homes.

[0.07x] I was hesitant in purchasing this lens because I have become comfortable with Leica, Zeiss, and Voigtlander as my three manufacturers of choice for my M240. At the time of purchase, my wide options were the VM 12mm f/5.6 III and 21mm f/4. Here are some observations from tripod-based testing when comparing to the 12mm VM.

1) The Laowa is more contrasty than the VM at f/5.6.
2) The VM seems a bit sharper across the frame when approximating an equal frame, not enough for me to consider this a major factor. For example, I didn’t notice a difference until at 200% zoom in my ~10 comparison shots.
3) The Laowa is noticeably brighter per f stop. This could be due to a number of factors that I don’t have the equipment to test but I would say the Laowa is around 1/3 stop brighter at f/5.6 compared to the VM at f/5.6.
4) The Laowa rendered noticeably warmer than the VM
5) The Laowa has a tactile stop at 0.7 meters that I personally appreciated.
6) Build-wise, the Laowa seems to have very narrow tolerances. It feels like my 50 Planar ZM in build quality and smoothness of focusing.
7) The filter compatibility is a nice touch that I plan to test in the future. That said, the same option is available for the 15mm f/4.5 VM III.
8) The Laowa has noticeable vignetting wide open.
9) The whole zero distortion thing isn’t just marketing. While I was only taking test shots around the house, I think I’ll appreciated this when traveling.

In sum, I’m going to give this little guy a shot. The 12 VM is on to its next owner. I’m still on the fence as to whether to keep my 21mm VM but it will at least stay in the cabinet for a few months to see if I can live without it. I’m still fixated on the idea of having one lens wider than my 28 Biogon and don’t want the bulk of the Tri-Elmar (or the hole in my wallet). It will take some time to see if the Laowa’s focusing stays smooth and the build quality holds up. I’ll try to update my review or post a new review down the road with some images.

[f/4] If you're on the fence about Laowa lenses, I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. As a person who normally buys strictly manufacturer lenses, Laowa is right on par with them and the Sharpness from this lens is unbelievable!

[114°] This is fun lens, super-wide and it performs quite well. Not a lens to be used for Milky Way shooting, but great for landscapes or normal night photography, including star trails. Coma is fairly well controlled with its smallest f/5.6 aperture. If you are comfortable using fully manual lenses, this is a nice addition, very compact in the bag!
