Forget about clipping, forget about gain, and forget about hassle; just power on the Zoom F2 Field Recorder Kit with Lavalier Mic, Windbuster, Memory Cardultracompact portable field recorder and press record to capture clear, distortion-free dialog in an instant for your next video shoot, podcast, vlog, or interview. Plus, the F2-BT model is available to empower users with app-based control and wireless timecode synchronization in addition to everything the F2 has to offer.

Thanks to its 32-bit float technology, the F2 handles the softest and loudest sounds you can throw at it while avoiding distortion, maintaining low-noise performance, and freeing you from the responsibility of adjusting gain. Recordings ruined by clipped converters and poorly set preamps are things of the past. You don't even have to worry about unintentionally interrupting the F2 because a simple flick of the Hold switch will keep it recording no matter what button you press.

Whereas other F-Series recorders such as the F4, F6, and F8n are centered around an audio bag–ready form factor for location sound recordists, the F2 is tailored for belt-mount and pocket-friendly placement directly on the subject. Even the included lavalier microphone, with its low-profile design and locking connector, is optimized for reliable and visually discreet operation that won't distract the wearer or the videographer. With a headphone output and onboard transport controls, the F2 also allows actors to listen back to recordings to critique their own performances.

From the refreshingly simple one-touch controls to the long battery life and multiple powering options, the F2 is properly equipped to serve you, regardless of your audio background. Whether you need long-duration recording for a podcast, professional audio capture for an interview, a rock-solid system for weddings, or a space-saving setup for vlogs, the F2 is ready to capture your crucial audio at any location.

Plus, its operational simplicity ensures that the F2 will never get in the way of your workflow, be it simple, complex, or always changing. You can feel confident using it as your main recorder or as a backup unit for added safety.

Attach the included lavalier microphone to your subject with the supplied mic clip, then connect its 3.5mm plug–equipped cable to the input of the F2; the locking connection inhibits unintended disconnects. The microphone's omnidirectional polar pattern delivers consistent audio pickup from all directions, yielding dependable voice capture even as the subject turns their head or the microphone changes position. Also, three windscreens are supplied for easy reduction of light wind noise.

The F2 utilizes 32-bit float recording technology to capture intensely loud signals without overloading the A/D converters and bring in extremely quiet sounds without overwhelming noise, all without requiring any gain adjustment from you. Record with confidence knowing that you can just connect the microphone and start recording to attain crisp, clear dialog.

The F2 boasts two high-quality recording resolutions to choose from—32-bit / 44.1 kHz or 32-bit / 48 kHz, both in mono uncompressed BWF (Broadcast Wave File) format. No data compression means that no quality is lost in the creation of the audio files. Use the onboard 80 Hz low-cut filter to reduce rumble and bass buildup in your recordings.

Maximize portability by recording directly to a microSD/microSDHC/microSDXC card (available separately) for up to 512GB of storage space.

The F2 can accommodate mic-level signals via its locking 3.5mm mini-jack input. Since it supplies 2.5V plug-in power, you're free to use common condenser mics such as lavaliers, headsets, and earsets.

A locking 3.5mm stereo output jack with dedicated volume up/down buttons enables straightforward routing to your camera, DSLR, secondary recorder, or even headphones for easy monitoring.

To keep up with the pace of on-location production, the F2 can be powered via two AAA alkaline, Lithium, or NiMH rechargeable batteries, a Zoom AD-17 power adapter (available separately), or a USB Type-C battery pack (available separately). With up to 15 hours of run time on AAA batteries, all-day shoots are no problem for the F2.

The F2 Editor lets you adjust settings, format SD cards, and more from your Mac or Windows computer. Since the F2 has a USB Type-C port, simply connect it to your computer via a USB cable (available separately) and launch the editor. The USB connection also makes it easy to transfer files to your computer.

Intuitive one-touch buttons—record, play, stop, and volume up/down— provide fast, hassle-free operations with no menus to wade through. LEDs are provided for clear indication of audio level, battery status, and power.

Flip the power switch down to the Hold position to engage the Hold function, which prevents interruptions to the recording caused by accidental button presses.

The F2 is equipped with a high-precision internal clock (±3ppm) to avoid audio and video syncing issues.

With its minimalist profile, the lightweight F2 attaches neatly on belts and waistbands, or can be slipped into a pocket so the recorder can be easily concealed.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Could the headphone or line output somehow feed a mirrorless camera or would the camera's mic be a better reference track? Too bad there are no camera recording 32bit.

A: If you were to being using this recorder close enough to the camera that you could run an extension cable coupled with an attenuator cable, then yes, you could connect the headphone out to the camera. However, since this was designed with the intention of allowing mobility while recording, we'd suggest using a separate dslr mic on camera for quality scratch audio, such as this B&H # ROVMPR.

Q: 2. Will it work with Deity V mic d3 pro?

A: You can plug a Deity V MIc D3 Pro shotgun mic into this recorder, but be aware that the mic's attached cable does not have a threaded sleeve on the end, which the Rode F2 mic input is expecting. There is a chance that the mic can pop out. Make sure contact is being made, and perhaps secure the connection with a piece of gaffers tape.

Q: 3. How long can it record 32bit float using a 32gb card?

A: The F2 will allow you to record approximately 23 hours and 8 minutes of 32-bit float audio at 48 kHz in WAV format onto a 32GB microSDHC memory card.

Q: 4. Can I use it with the Sennheiser MKE 600? Will I need an attenuation cable?

A: The MKE600 will work with no other adapters needed

Q: 5. can i add rode videomic ntg on this?

A: Yes, you can use a standard TRS cable for the 3.5mm output. Since the F2 has a locking connector, use a cable like the Sennheiser CL1 3.5mm to 3.5mm Output Cable for EW Series Camera-Mount Receiver (B&H# SECL1) which has a non-locking 3.5mm TRS connector on one side and a locking 3.5mm TRS connector for the recorder's input. This cable is 20" long but you can use a standard aux extension cable like the Hosa Technology Stereo Mini Male to Stereo Mini Female Audio Cable - 10' (B&H# HOSMMSMF10) or any similar cable in the length you need. Connect the male end to the mic's output and the female end will connect to extend the length of the cable connected to the F2's locking input.

Q: 6. Does this recorder support "plug in" mic power? (aka 3 volt or 5 volt "bias")

A: Yes, the F2 does supply plug-in power for condenser microphones. Just be aware that the input on the F2 uses a 3.5mm TRS locking connector like the one used on the Sennheiser ME 2-II Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone (B&H #SEME2II).

Q: 7. How long can it record with a 64gb Card?

A: You can record approximately 46 hours, 17 minutes of recording time with a 64GB card and using the F2.

Q: 8. Would a mic with a Sennheiser G4 adapter be able to plug into this?

A: Microphones that have a 3.5mm TRS locking connector and are compatible for use with Sennheiser wireless bodypack transmitters are also compatible for use with the Zoom F2 and F2-BT. For example, the Sennheiser ME 2-II and MKE 2 Gold lavalier microphones are both compatible for use with the F2 and F2-BT recorders.

Q: 9. Any chance they might sell a cheaper version without the lav mic? I do not want to pay for low quality mics when I have my own.

A: No, the F2 is only available with the lav mic included. Recorders like the F2 are about the same size as a wireless bodypack transmitter and have a locking input connector which prevents the mic from accidentally disconnecting. The lav is included to assure that a compatible mic is used. The Zoom H1n 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Handy Recorder (B&H # ZOH1N) is lower in price and does not included a lav but does have a built-in X/Y microphone along with a single 3.5mm input capable of handling mic or line level input signals. The Tascam DR-05X 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Audio Recorder with Onboard Stereo Microphone (B&H # TADR05X) is similar to the H1n and also lower in price. Other ultra compact recorders that are about the same size as the F2, such as the Zoom F1, Tascam DR-10L, and Tentacle Sync Track E, sell for around the same price or are priced higher and include a lav mic.

Q: 10. would this be able to record off a dj soundboard?

A: The Zoom F2 Ultracompact Portable Field Recorder is intended for use with a microphone for recording mic level signal. A mixer's output signal is line level. In order to connect a mixer to the input of the F2, you will need to use adapters as well as a line-to-mic attenuator. Since the F2 has a locking 3.5mm TRS input, you can use the Sennheiser CL-1 Cable (B&H # SECL1), which has a locking 3.5mm TRS male connector on one side and a standard non-locking 3.5mm TRS male connector on the other side. Then, you can attach a coupler like the Hosa Technology GMM303 3.5mm Female Stereo Mini to 3.5mm Female Stereo Mini Adapter (B&H # HOASMFSMF). Since many DJ mixers have RCA output, you can use the Sescom Attenuating Line to Mic Level Cable - TRS Male to Male RCA, 18" (B&H # SES43DBMZ2P), which has a built-in attenuator to convert the line level signal from the mixer to mic level while also providing connections to the mixer's RCA output.

[None] Even with LQ! zoom lavalier mic, it recorded very good quality audio at wedding ceremony.

[-32 dB/Pa] I bought 5 Zoom f2's this with a better lav mics like the Deity W Lav Pro gives me a great sound for the price. I was on the fence about the BT version but not having a way to monitor the sound was a no go for the price difference. I believe that this gives a better sounding option than a wireless system. The Rode wireless go II
is nice and you can record onto the transmitter and monitor the sound at the same time. But after listening to both the sound of the zoom was the winner for me.
I was never going to use the mic that came with the zoom F2 from the start. I needed a great sounding lav mic to get the sound that's usable for my work.
The setup is a boom shotgun outside, a boom hypercardioid indoors and a lav mics on everyone in the shot. The audio in the camera is for scratch only. The downside to the zoom f2 is I can't monitor it as I record but the boom mic is always monitored to assure good sound is there for the editing.
After hiding the lav I have the person move around to make sure that the clothing isn't making a sound on the mic itself by monitoring the zoom before concealment on the person, and tell the if you feel a change in the mic position to let use know and we will reattach it.

Pros. 32 bit Ease of use Small size No wireless drop off.
Cons. No way of monitoring unless you connect it to a wireless system the mic that comes with it could be better.

The mic that comes with the zoom will work fine for most people.

[±3 ppm] Set it and forget it. No gain settings, just 32 bit float goodness. I personally upgraded the mic, but the mic it comes with is fine too. Haven' had any issues that others claim. Great device.

[48 kHz / 32-Bit] I pre-ordered two Zoom F2 recorders, the F2 and the F2-BT because I wanted compact 32-bit floating recorders. They're both identical in terms of recording function, but if I were to do it all over again I would have gone with two F2-BT recorders instead of one of each.

The layout is very simple and it would actually help to have a bit more info on battery life, but I keep spare batteries with me all the time anyway so I'm not terribly worried about that.

The lav mic is larger than what I'd been using but it's not a bad mic.

What I'd been using before this was a Zoom H1 recorder, the first version (because I don't like the thought of the gain knob getting bumped on the new version). These replace the H1 perfectly and I'm planning to get more as soon as they're back in stock.

[Yes, 2.5 V] I am gonna report back after shooting a season with these. But after doing a couple small projects, my initial impression is, zoom killed it! sure there are some features that would be nice to add, wireless transmitting for monitoring while recording being the biggest one, or even just checking levels over the app while recording, to make sure its still working. But, dreaming aside, the 32bit float audio recording on these blows all the competition (besides tentacle sync of course) out of the water! I will never go back to anything but 32bit float recording at this point.

[0.505 lb] This device is a perfect companion for any videographer and you do not need to adjust gain or anything else.

[1] I bought this recorder a month ago despite the reviews after hearing some issues have been addressed. I have used it multiple times with no errors.

They have fixed the issue with the connection of a microphone, it does not create a popping sound. And I guarantee you that every single person that has been experiencing the non-recording issue did not read the manual on how to properly format the device, which is done via Zoom's app on a computer.

The audio quality out of it is top notch. 32-bit float audio is incredible. The F2 is 100% a set-it-and-forget-it audio recorder. Having to format through a computer is kind of annoying, but having the strength of 32-bit audio for lav mics at this price is an insanely good deal.

This has become an essential piece of equipment in my bag and I recommend it to everyone.

[0.505 lb] It's amazing to be able to record 32 bit audio at this size and price. I am connecting it to a boom microphone and I'm very pleased with the results. I got the blue tooth version to be able to control the unit from my phone. Not a single issue yet. Only negative is that it feels a little too plasticky. Hope that it lasts long enough!
