Pairing an exceptionally wide field of view with the ability to correct for perspective distortion, the Nikon F-mount Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift Lens Nikon Ffrom Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift Lens Nikon Fis an ideal lens for architecture and interior applications. The broad 110° angle of view is complemented by an impressive +/- 11mm shift range to compensate for unwanted converging lines and keystone distortion. This shift control is further complemented by a 360° rotation mechanism applying the movements in various directions for to suit both horizontal and vertical orientation shooting. Additionally, as part of the Zero-D lens series, this 15mm f/4.5 also renders scenes with a high degree of accuracy and very low distortion.

In terms of optics, two aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements are featured, which reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for high sharpness and clarity. An anti-reflective coating also helps to control flare and ghosting for heightened contrast and color rendering. The lens uses a manual focus design for working with subjects as close a 7.9" away and has a five-blade diaphragm for producing distinct 10-point sun stars.

Ultra-wide lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras but can also be used with DX models where it provides a 22.5mm equivalent focal length.

As part of the Zero-D series, this lens has a rectilinear design that renders subjects with minimal distortion in order to suit architectural, interior, and landscape applications.

Integrated +/- 11mm of shift adjustment helps to correct perspective distortion and eliminate keystone distortion.

Large 65mm-diameter image circle easily covers full-frame sensors without any vignetting. Additionally, this lens can also be adapted to medium format mirrorless cameras (44 x 33mm sensor), where up to +/- 8mm of shift is available.

The shift control works in conjunction with 360° of rotation for applying the shift in various directions, benefitting switching between vertical and horizontal shooting orientations, and the rotation mechanism has click stops at 15° increments for intuitive handling.

Two aspherical elements limit spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color neutrality.

Updated anti-reflective coating suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Manual focusing design and a minimum focusing distance of 7.9" suits working with close-up subjects.

Five-blade diaphragm produces distinct 10-point sun stars and specular highlights when stopped-down and photographing point light sources.

Compatible with optional Shift Lens Support for more balanced mounting and to better enable using the lens for shift-type stitched panorama shooting without parallax error.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. It appears from the description that this lens is not a true tilt/shift lens, only a shift lens. How is this even useful?

A: This Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift lens does not offer tilt options; it is, as the name implies, a shift lens only. It's a specialty lens used for certain effects.

Q: 2. I am very curious about the final bullet in the lens overview: "Compatible with optional Shift Lens Support for more balanced mounting and to better enable using the lens for shift-type stitched panorama shooting without parallax error." Is there an additional shift option?

A: The shift lens support (https://bhpho.to/36d359d) doesn't offer any additional shifting of the lens plane, but allows mounting via the lens, allowing for an easier time with parallax correction during multi-stitch panoramas.

Q: 3. What is the difference between the 14 blade and 5 blade versions (aside from number of blades)?

A: The 14 blade version of the Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/4.5R Zero-D Shift Lens for Leica L Mount would allow for 14 point sunstars versus 5 point sunstars in the 5 blade version. Otherwise, they are identical in every other way.

Q: 4. Is this lens compatible with the Canon teleconverter?

A: No, this is not compatible with a teleconverter. Typically by design, teleconverters only fit on super-telephoto lenses and not wide-angle/ultra-wide lenses.

Q: 5. Is this an EL Mount?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/4.5R Zero-D Shift for Canon EFhas a Canon EF mount for Canon DSLR cameras.

Q: 6. Can this lens be used with adaptor for canon R mount or Leica Sl2 mount ?

A: Yes the Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift Lens for Canon EF can be adapted to a Canon RF mount camera or Leica L mount camera.

Q: 7. Can the F mount work with the Nikon Z F-mount Adapter?

A: Yes, you may use the Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/4.5R Zero-D Shift Lens for Nikon F with the Nikon FTZ II adapter.

Q: 8. Does this lens, come with a protective hood ?

A: No, the Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift Lens for Nikon F does not come with a lens hood. Venus Optics did not design a lens hood for use with this lens. That being said, the lens does come with an all-metal thick protective front lens cap to protect the lens during storage/transit.

Q: 9. Is this lens adaptable to a GH5?

A: Unfortunately, this lens cannot be adapted to the Panasonic GH5.

Q: 10. Does this produce optical flare? I found other bulbous lenses have issues with flare in the form of colored spots opposite strong light sources.

A: Flaring can occur when using the lens aimed or directly hit by a focused light source at certain angles, but the flare is managed quite well compared to other lenses as the lens has an anti-reflective coating also helps to control flare and ghosting for heightened contrast and color rendering. If the light source is in the frame, flare is controlled rather well. If the flare is on the edge of the frame, it may be more noticeable, but can usually be reduced/eliminated by slightly recomposing the framing of your image.

[f/22] The Laowa 15mm Shift Lens is capable of making great images. It is fully manual with no automation.
You need to set the aperture manually, it does not communicate with the camera body at all. Focus is manual, there are no focus contacts on the lens. The focus scale printed on the lens is off so don't plan on using that. With all that said at F8 & F11 the picture quality is excellent. My copy has no color fringing and is sharp.

To set the focus I used Liveview on a Nikon DSLR and with some trial & error determined the hyper-focus settings and then marked them on the lens barrel with a pen. With hyper-focus set at F11 the lens will produce photos with sharp focus from about 3' to infinity.

The parallel and horizontal lines stay straight, great for architectural work. The shift function is performed differently than any of my other shift lenses, with a twist of the barrel, that works well.

It's definitely a lens to use with a tripod. It is a challenge to use but worth the effort. I really like the end results.

[110°] This is a sharp tool for a particular purpose, but once mastered there are many ways to apply it. It is an extreme wide-angle (equivalent to 12mm full-frame) lens with very little edge distortion, and nearly all of the field of view is in focus if you want that. The controls are smooth, precise, easy to reach, and ENTIRELY manual. There aren’t any electronics in the lens, so you must use the camera’s electronics to assess the light coming through the lens.

I used to adore the Canon 17mm T/S lens when I could borrow one, but this lens satisfies that need. It was designed for the GFX, so no vignetting in the corners! I can get into scenes I could not cover before.

[110°] After I combined this lens with TLT ROKR from Photodiox to fit the Sony A7 series, I got myself a 15mm TS lens in par with the Canon 17mm TS at a much lower cost. The performance is great and the built is solid.

[f/22] I am so impressed with this 15mm shift lens, the optics sharp and the shift and rotation mechanics are smooth.
I already own all four tilt/shift lens by Nikon and wanted something a little wider than my 19mm and I am so pleased with the results from this lens.
For being so wide, I haven't found any issues with noticeable warping or vignettes at the edges. This lens captures such a beautiful wide angle.
What I really like is the shift function, the shift turning knob is a rotating ring around the lens rather than a separate set of knobs on a Nikon tilt/shift. It makes the action of focusing and shifting a much more seamless action.
For the price, this is an incredible lens to add to my kit. I am blown away by the ease of use and above all, I am so happy with the results.

[Manual Focus] My earlier review was titled Iceland Lens of Choice. Now that's it's springtime and wildflower season I'm having fun with the close focus capability of this lens. Can compose photos showing both detail of a small flower and its habitat and background. Here are two examples from the hill behind our home in Jacksonville, Oregon. Gentner's fritillary was with an a7iii. For Paintbrush the Laowa was mounted on a a6500, effective focal length 22.5mm. This is a useful fun versatile lens of fine optics and handling.

[110°] Brings back the days when every shot had to be hand-focused ... many young photographers reject manual lenses out of hand, but I regard autofocus as a frill. The lens itself is great ... very sharp, minimal distortion, and you can add filters, which is unusual for 15mm glass. And compared to virtually every other lens made for the Nikon Z series so far, it's affordable! Highly recommended.

[2.37 lb] I first bought a used copy and ended up returning it as it was really soft even at f11. Purchased a new one and this thing is tack sharp all the way out to the edges even with a 11mm shift. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite lens.
