Pairing an exceptionally wide field of view with the ability to correct for perspective distortion, the Sony E-mount Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift Lens Sony Efrom Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift Lens Sony Eis an ideal lens for architecture and interior applications. The broad 110° angle of view is complemented by an impressive +/- 11mm shift range to compensate for unwanted converging lines and keystone distortion. This shift control is further complemented by a 360° rotation mechanism applying the movements in various directions for to suit both horizontal and vertical orientation shooting. Additionally, as part of the Zero-D lens series, this 15mm f/4.5 also renders scenes with a high degree of accuracy and very low distortion.

In terms of optics, two aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements are featured, which reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for high sharpness and clarity. An anti-reflective coating also helps to control flare and ghosting for heightened contrast and color rendering. The lens uses a manual focus design for working with subjects as close a 7.9" away and has a five-blade diaphragm for producing distinct 10-point sun stars.

Ultra-wide lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras but can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 22.5mm equivalent focal length.

As part of the Zero-D series, this lens has a rectilinear design that renders subjects with minimal distortion in order to suit architectural, interior, and landscape applications.

Integrated +/- 11mm of shift adjustment helps to correct perspective distortion and eliminate keystone distortion.

Large 65mm-diameter image circle easily covers full-frame sensors without any vignetting.

The shift control works in conjunction with 360° of rotation for applying the shift in various directions, benefitting switching between vertical and horizontal shooting orientations, and the rotation mechanism has click stops at 15° increments for intuitive handling.

Two aspherical elements limit spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color neutrality.

Updated anti-reflective coating suppresses flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Manual focusing design and a minimum focusing distance of 7.9" suits working with close-up subjects.

Five-blade diaphragm produces distinct 10-point sun stars and specular highlights when stopped-down and photographing point light sources.

Compatible with optional Shift Lens Support for more balanced mounting and to better enable using the lens for shift-type stitched panorama shooting without parallax error.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. It appears from the description that this lens is not a true tilt/shift lens, only a shift lens. How is this even useful?

A: This Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift lens does not offer tilt options; it is, as the name implies, a shift lens only. It's a specialty lens used for certain effects.

Q: 2. Can the F mount work with the Nikon Z F-mount Adapter?

A: Yes, you may use the Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/4.5R Zero-D Shift Lens for Nikon F with the Nikon FTZ II adapter.

Q: 3. What is the difference between the 14 blade and 5 blade versions (aside from number of blades)?

A: The 14 blade version of the Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/4.5R Zero-D Shift Lens for Leica L Mount would allow for 14 point sunstars versus 5 point sunstars in the 5 blade version. Otherwise, they are identical in every other way.

Q: 4. What is "Shift Lens Support"?

A: The shift lens support refers to the Venus Optics Shift Lens Support for Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Lens, BH # VELS1545 which is compatible with this lens. https://bhpho.to/3qVvwRT

Q: 5. How would using an optical shift lens (like this one) compare to using perspective crop in photoshop with a wider lens like the Laowa 11mm? I'm asking because they're about the same price but the 11mm could be more versatile and I don't trust myself to perfectly frame photos in the field.

A: Though the 11mm would be a wider view, the distortion would be an issue and harder to work with in post. I would recommend the 15mm Zero-D especially if you are doing interiors due to the fact that if you need a wider view, you can stitch two images and it would still be easier than using the 11mm and trying to correct properly.

Q: 6. For EF mount, is the aperture set on the lens or in-camera?

A: The aperture would be set on the lens and the camera would need to be in manual mode.

Q: 7. Is this an EL Mount?

A: The Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/4.5R Zero-D Shift for Canon EFhas a Canon EF mount for Canon DSLR cameras.

Q: 8. Does this produce optical flare? I found other bulbous lenses have issues with flare in the form of colored spots opposite strong light sources.

A: Flaring can occur when using the lens aimed or directly hit by a focused light source at certain angles, but the flare is managed quite well compared to other lenses as the lens has an anti-reflective coating also helps to control flare and ghosting for heightened contrast and color rendering. If the light source is in the frame, flare is controlled rather well. If the flare is on the edge of the frame, it may be more noticeable, but can usually be reduced/eliminated by slightly recomposing the framing of your image.

Q: 9. the teleconverters do work on the canon 17mm, 24mm tilt shift lenses so are you saying they do not work on the Laowa?

A: Canon only recommends the use of their teleconverters on specific L-series telephoto lenses, and attempting to connect them to a lens for which it is not designed may damage the front element on the teleconverter, the rear element on the lens, or both. We cannot test and cannot confirm if the Canon teleconverter may be used with this lens. If you own a Canon teleconverter, you may try to test it at your own risk, but do note that damage to either item would not be covered by either Canon or Venus Optics.

Q: 10. Can this lens be used with the Laowa Magic Format Converter for Canon EF to Fuji GFX?

A: Yes, the Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift Lens for Canon EF would be compatible for use with the Venus Optics Laowa Magic Format Converter for Canon EF to Fuji GFX.

[15mm] I wasn't crazy about the price, but once I put it on my a7s, I was very happy. Sharp. Minimal distortion. And though I keep seeing people say it doesn't matter on a wide angle lens, the bokeh is gorgeous. Oh and a UWA with a 72mm filter thread...awesome!

This is going to replace my 14mm Bower that I've flown FOREVER. I gave the 16-35's a quick look, but they seem even more over priced. Plus there's always something special about a prime. I recommend. Happy shooting!

[15mm] Brings back the days when every shot had to be hand-focused ... many young photographers reject manual lenses out of hand, but I regard autofocus as a frill. The lens itself is great ... very sharp, minimal distortion, and you can add filters, which is unusual for 15mm glass. And compared to virtually every other lens made for the Nikon Z series so far, it's affordable! Highly recommended.

[5] Tested against the 16-35 f4 @ 16mm, the Laowa has incredible clarity and sharpness (and I liked the zoom better than the Batis 18 I had a while back). Flare has not been an issue either. I was also surprised at how compact the lens is, even after comparing it at the camerasize site. It's similar in size to the Loxia and 55 1.8 with just some extra width near the front. Build is great, focus ring is firm.

I've read from several users that infinity is right in the middle of the infinity marker, that is also the case with mine and is convenient for landscapes without a very close foreground element. However, with astro, I have found setting it to the middle of the right infinity loop (focused just slightly closer than infinity mentioned above) is ideal. The coma demonstrated on review sites isn't bad in my opinion, but when I focus like this, the coma is even further reduced with insignificant changes to the central frame. And any foreground will also be a bit better as a bonus.

[110°] My earlier review was titled Iceland Lens of Choice. Now that's it's springtime and wildflower season I'm having fun with the close focus capability of this lens. Can compose photos showing both detail of a small flower and its habitat and background. Here are two examples from the hill behind our home in Jacksonville, Oregon. Gentner's fritillary was with an a7iii. For Paintbrush the Laowa was mounted on a a6500, effective focal length 22.5mm. This is a useful fun versatile lens of fine optics and handling.

[Sony E] Debated a long time between this the Zeiss batis 18mm to round out my other batis primes. The trade offs in price, wider aperture, low distortion and closer minimum focus distance won me over.

There is heavy vignetting, but I dont find it much of an issue for this type of lens as I rarely shoot large open landscapes, and from what I saw playing with the raw files, it corrects just fine. I do prefer the color rendition of the batis lenses more, but I can get to a similarly happy spot with this in photoshop, just takes a little extra effort.

Overall, a great addition to my prime lens kit, and would buy again. It gives some cool perspectives.

Only cons I see are the weight, and Im not confident in its weather sealing compared to the batis line.

[Full-Frame] Upgraded my kit from Sony Nex-7 and a6500 to the marvelous a7iii.  For UW had been shooting the aps-c format Sony 10-18 f4 and Samyang 12mm f2.  For the a7iii first I tried a Tokina Firin MF.  It was decentered.  Replacement Firin was better, yet corners were unacceptably blurred at all apertures.  Ordered a Zeiss Batis 18, but cancelled as I really wanted faster aperture for auroras.  Received the Laowa shortly before 4th journey to Iceland.  Travelled with three lenses, the Laowa, a Batis 40mm CF, and a Sony 24-105 f4 G.  Could have done the entire trip with just the Laowa.  Images are superb, even wide open and out to edges.  center cropping, when needed, remained sharp.  Manual focus with a mechanical ring is an asset when shooting night skies.  Infinity on my sample came out just shy of mid point of infinity emblem, same as reported in many reviews.  To minimize coma at f/2 its written that focus should be just a smidge short of infinity, which I endeavored to do.  Was prepared to shoot panoramas but with moving clouds, flowing water and waves, and shifting aurora shafts single exposures worked best.  Nevertheless, the Laowa is my first lens with location of entrance pupil is marked on outside of barrel, and when installed on my PocketPano this facilitates adjustment.  So I am delighted with the Laowa, dont mind lack of electronic EXIF data, and believe I had the best (also smallest and lightest) rig of all with whom I traveled.

[2.66 lb] I first bought a used copy and ended up returning it as it was really soft even at f11. Purchased a new one and this thing is tack sharp all the way out to the edges even with a 11mm shift. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite lens.

[Sony E] I use this lens for both interior real-estate and mountain landscapes. Works perfect and would recommend if this is what your shooting.

[2.66 lb] The lens is well made and sharp enough

[Full-Frame] I purchased this lens to replace my Sony 12-24 f/4 because that lens was just not quite fast enough for my needs which generally includes a lot of night photography. The lens has acceptable levels of coma, which is really important to me. It is also very easy to use and handle. Lastly, I really appreciate the super close minimum focus distance for grand scenic landscapes where you want to include something very close to to the lens in the foreground (like flowers). All-in-all, this lens is a great choice for Sony full-frame users.
