Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this come with the EXH-6 attachment? The description is confusing. It says 4 inputs but the base unit only has 2, but allows for the EXH-6 attachment to get 4.

A: The U-44 does not include the attachment for the extra two microphone channels. I have not purchased that to try yet, but the connector on the bottom of the unit works with the microphone that comes with the H6. I think those are the same type of Zoom microphone connector standard.

Q: 2. Does the headphone out have its own volume control?

A: Yes it does. On the lower portion of the unit are two large dials. The one on the right is the Headphone volume control while the one on the left is the Main Out control.

Q: 3. how long does the 9 volt run this unit?

A: I've never done a controlled test, but we've used these for several years and I'm perfectly happy with the battery life. I think they'll last as long as in any other basic IFB box.

Q: 4. Is the balanced output on the back intended to be plugged into powered speakers (like JBL 305's)?

A: Yes, the balanced output on the back of the iFi audio ZEN CAN Signature Premium Desk-Fi Headphone Amplifier would be used to connect a powered speaker like the JBL 305.

Q: 5. Will this work with an iPhone?

A: This product is not designed for use with an iPhone. It can be used to connect to your Mac or Windows computer, or iPad* via USB, to record with mics, instruments, and more.

Q: 6. Can i work with 5.1 sound files conecting this interface to my home theater receiver via optical I/O?

A: That ZoomU-44 is an audio interface used with a computer to turn the analog signal into a digital signal. It is used for recording purposes. Unfortunately it will not work with your 5,1 system.

Q: 7. Does this record to SD as well?

A: No. This is strictly an interface to your computer or iOS device.

Q: 8. It says the mac processor should be Intel Core i3. I have i5. Will that still work?

A: Yes, the U-44 should work with your computer. Intel Core i3 is the minimum system requirement..

Q: 9. Will this work with an iPhone? (I see it only mentions iPad, but since it seems to supply its own battery power, I'm thinking it should work with iPhone too, no?)

A: This product is not designed for use with an iPhone. It can be used to connect to your Mac or Windows computer, or iPad* via USB, to record with mics, instruments, and more. A

Q: 10. How do you control the levels for the RCA Line Outputs? Do you use the same "Main Out" knob for adjusting your speakers?

A: The level of the RCA Line Outputs on the U-24 cannot be adjusted.

[0.8 lb] Small, yet powerful. Bass boost and gain work as advertised. Doesn't heat up. Comfortably drives my headphones between 11 and 1.

On some Rock/Metal songs with boost and gain, some vocals and distorted guitars will become indistinguishable.

With boost and gain nearly all EDM and Pop are sublime.

All of this is through Hifiman Edition XS.
I own and have compared this to both the Fiio BTR 7 and Shanling H2.

Having purchased this i see no need to purchase any other Ifi product

[2x AA] I was surprised how well this sounds for the price. It is a great way to listen to Apple Music in High Res, as it is compatible with iOS. I use the Lighting to USB 3 Type-A Camera adapter. Highly recommended.

[0.8 lb] I got this to use in the field, being battery operated is great. I haven’t had any problems with hiss. I also use a power block to run it.

[2x AA] About as good as it gets for a microphone preamp. It's worth it to get this or the EC1 as a front end for your recording setup if you're in the market. The headphone mixing makes it perfect: That way you never really have to worry about buffer or latency settings in your interface. Plenty of power for all headphones (more than I've ever heard in any recording interface!) and quite clean too. (Almost too powerful for IEMS though! - it works but you may need to turn things way down though)

If you look up reviews/specs: it measures really well: you can't do any better for a clean preamp or DI. I've never been a fan of tube pres or transformer pres: but if you want that sound: the Mojo actually gets that type of sound but better anyways if you want 'tone'. (I simply just never switch it on)

The external power supply I'm not a fan of: I'd happily pay a bit more for a larger chassis and internal power supply. It's just one of those: if your cable breaks or you run it over with a chair or the pins get damaged - a replacement may not be easy to find and if you have something important to record and need to wait a week or months if this is your only preamp - that may not be what you want.

I'd suggest first buying a DPA or earthworks mic or another SDC that works great on vocals and any instrument: they make the biggest difference. Then interface as most interface preamps are pretty clean - and then one of these after that. These have more headroom and just sound a bit less compressed than most other preamps (easier to hear with IEMS) but a microphone and placement is obviously more important. Though the 0 latency headphone monitoring might actually be quite important too - to make sure you get a good take?

Either way - the EC1 or EC2 are great!

[4-Channel] Great sound from a tiny package. USB powered, no wall wart or power cable needed. Head phones and powered speakers work fine with it. Perfect for videos and music from PC.

[4-Channel] The iFi hip-dac 3 is an exceptional portable DAC/amp that delivers a warm, rich sound profile perfect for audiophiles on the go. Its ability to produce a full-bodied sound with deep, impactful bass and smooth mids makes it a standout choice for those who appreciate a lush, immersive listening experience. The warm tonal quality enhances vocals and instruments, giving them a natural and engaging presence that draws you into the music.

One of the hip-dac 3's most impressive features is its powerful amplification. Despite its compact size, this device can drive demanding headphones with ease, delivering loud, distortion-free audio that remains clear and dynamic even at higher volumes. Whether you're using high-impedance headphones or sensitive in-ear monitors, the hip-dac 3 ensures you get the best possible performance.

[4-Channel] I had to replace my ageing Prospect amplifier after it failed to work during a live shot. The Prospect company no longer exists, so I was in a bit of a spot, but the JK ampflier was recommended by a colleague. I can only pass on that recommendation: solidly built, a neat little recessed on/off switch is exactly what I want, a battery-level light that shines bright (I always found the Prospect battery-level light to be rather ambiguous), and a big fat audio-level knob that even the most naive journalist can master! I love it!

[24 dB ] The Zoom U-24 portable audio interface is easy to use with any DAW. The two inputs take XLR & 1/4 inch male plugs so you can record two electric guitars, or acoustic guitars, or one of each, or one with vocal at once. Also has midi in & out & headphone monitor. Very portable. Great for the price.
