Featuring a revised APS-C-format 25.7MP CMOS sensor, the K-3 Mark III's sensor sports a BSI design that promotes low noise, smooth tones, and accurate color rendering throughout the sensitivity range, from ISO 100-1600000, to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. The sensor is paired with an updated PRIME V image processor, too, which achieves quick performance and processing to benefit both stills and video recording. Full-resolution continuous shooting up to 12 fps is also possible, along with UHD 4K video recording at 30p.

Distinct among DSLRs, an advanced 5-axis SR II Shake Reduction system provides 5.5 stop-effective image stabilization performance with select lenses. This in-body IS system helps to greatly reduce the appearance of camera shake when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds, making it easier to work in more difficult lighting conditions.

Beyond controlling camera shake, the SR II mechanism also benefits stills applications by enabling a Pixel Shift Resolution feature and an AA Filter Simulator function. Pixel Shift Resolution shifts the sensor in small increments in sequential shots in order to capture full color information at each pixel site, then composites these sequential frames to produce a single image with richer detail and resolution. The AA Filter Simulator, on the other hand, utilizes microscopic vibrations during the capture process to help mitigate moiré in order to produce clean renderings of fabrics and other high-frequency materials. This system works in conjunction with the sensor that lacks an AA filter, so you have the choice between gaining the most resolution or reducing moiré under specific scenarios.

Updated with more points and improved coverage, the SAFOX 13 autofocus sensor is a phase-detection focusing system that uses 101 individual points, including 25 cross-type sensors in the middle of the image frame. This array benefits focusing speed and accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions, down to -4 EV. Additionally, a new 307000-pixel RGBIr sensor and new tracking algorithm also promote more accurate tracking of subjects, even when moving at varying speeds or in irregular directions.

  • Large and bright optical pentaprism viewfinder provides an impressive 1.05x magnification and covers 100% of the image frame for clear and accurate eye-level viewing. The pentaprism's design has also been updated to use high-refraction glass, optimized coatings, and a distortion-correcting element to reduce aberrations and promote high clarity and color fidelity.
  • Rear 3.2" 1.62m-dot touchscreen LCD is a large and bright means for image review, menu navigation, and live view shooting. This screen is also benefitted by a Night Vision function that adjusts the screen's brightness depending on the shooting conditions.
  • Typical of Pentax's designs, a sturdy and weather-resistant construction is featured for use in trying weather conditions. The chassis is built from lightweight-yet-durable magnesium alloy and is fitted with a series of dust- and moisture-resistant seals to protect against various weather conditions. The camera is also freezeproof down to 14°F and the durability is carried over to the shutter unit as well, which is rated for 300,000 shutter actuations.
  • Both 3.5mm microphone and headphone ports are featured to benefit audio performance while recording video.
  • Updated control scheme includes a new AF point selector lever for intuitive point selection; a Hyper Operation system with a new Advanced mode for more intuitive exposure mode control; an Operation Control Lock function to prevent accidental settings changes; and a new Smart Function mode and dedicated button for quick selection of settings and functions.
  • Included D-LI90 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 800 shots per charge and the camera's USB Type-C port can be used for in-body battery charging.
  • Dual SD memory card slots offer flexible storage capabilities and the first card slot is compatible with the UHS-II standard for faster transfer speeds.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity can be used to wirelessly share imagery or remotely control the camera via the Image Sync mobile app.

Using the high-density RGBIr sensor and the PRIME V image processor, the K-3 Mark III can use the Real-time Scene Analysis System to optimize exposure and AF accuracy by detecting subjects' faces and eyes with image recognition technology. This system relies on Deep Learning, an AI-based technology, for more accurate subject detection and scene judgement.

Firmware version 1.41 allows this camera to be used as an astro tracer without the optional Pentax O-GPS1 GPS Module. The camera enables astro tracing without GPS, direction, or other data, so there is no need for GPS positioning or to perform precision calibration. In addition, astro tracing can operate in areas affected by magnetic fields. Before starting, a preliminary shot is taken to track the object based on the movement of stars. (It is, however, recommended to use the O-GPS1 for star photography when shooting with a wide-angle lens.)

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What's the best Pentax multipurpose lens to get for this camera?

A: There are many good lenses that work in the Pentax K-3 Mark III. The best for low light in a zoom and is good for some wide shots and portraits is the, Pentax HD-DA 16-50mm f/2.8ED PLM AW Lens BH #PE165028 • MFR #28030 https://bhpho.to/3tUVV5Z

Q: 2. I have a Pentax K-70 and after 5000 shots the camera has had problems with the solenoid (dark photos), does this camera have the same problem?

A: There have been no such issues reported on this camera.

Q: 3. ‏ I'm debating between the K-1 Mark II full frame and the K-3 mark III.  As a photographer who mainly loves nature and wildlife photography, and after following the new data on the K-3 mark III, I want to know what do you think will be advantage to my needs in the new camera?  And does the figure of 36.4mp in k-1 compared to 26mp not play a role?

A: While comprehensive testing has not yet been independently done on the K3 Mk III, their new flagship APS-C camera on paper seems to be great for all of the kinds of photography you are interested in. However, the typical advantages between full-frame and APS-C still apply. These typically involve low-light performance, sharpness/detail resolving/visual clarity, and wider FOV versus crop-factor. Because the K3 Mk III is newer, the gap between them will have lessened, but are probably still present. Both cameras, however, would be great choices for landscape, wildlife, and other kinds of photography.

Q: 4. Does this come with one battery or two (i.e. one for the camera and the other for the grip)?

A: The Pentax K-3 Mark III DSLR Camera with 70-210mm Lens and Battery Grip Kit (Black) includes one battery--there are no batteries included with the battery grip.

Q: 5. Can I use the lenses from my K-5 on the K-3?

A: Yes the lenses from your K-5 will work perfectly on the K-3.

Q: 6. Does the K3iii come with a battery charger?

A: Yes. As indicated under the "In The Box" section under the Overview tab on our website, the Pentax AC-U2 USB Power Adapter and Power Plug and the I-USB166 USB Cable are included with the camera's purchase. You would charge the battery inside the camera. To charge the battery, you would insert the battery into the camera, insert the power plug into the USB power adapter until it clicks, then connect the USB cable to the USB power adapter while making sure the camera's power switch is set to [OFF]. It would take a maximum of 4.5 hours to charge the camera battery. If you need an external battery charger to charge the battery outside the camera, the Pentax D-BC177 Travel Charger, B&H # PEDBC177, or the Pentax K-BC90 Battery Charger Kit for K7 Digital SLR Camera, B&H # PEKBC90, would work for your usage needs.

Q: 7. Any adapter for canon ef /ef-s lens to pentax k3 miiicamwra?

A: We do have an adapter for the opposite but we do not have an adapter that allows for Canon lenses on a Pentax K mount camera.

Q: 8. Can this camera be attached to a telescope with a T Adapter? Any settings to adjust to allow shutter release w/out a lens?

A: The Pentax K-3 Mark III Monochrome DSLR Camera can be attached to a telescope with a T adapter. Without a lens shutter speed can't be adjusted.

Q: 9. Does the battery grip d-gb3 used on the K-3 work?

[Pentax K] Amazing camera! Same classic Mark III feel, and just heavy enough to make you imagine you're a pro when you hold it, point and shoot. Yet, the image contrast, sharpness, and shades make this camera irreplaceable when compared to similar B&W shots taken by a color camera. Definitely recommend to a friend.
Thank you B&H Photo Video for having this baby in stock, and making my purchase experience a breeze, the shipment arrived in no time.

[1/200 Second] For all of us who cannot spend the money on the Lecia, Pentax gives us a wonderful Monochrome digital camera. Based on the K3 chassis it is a Monochrome only Pentax K-3 Mark iii. It is an APS-C professional-level camera. With excellent ergonomics that Pentax is known for. Yes everyone is dashing off on mirrorless but the bright, eyeglass-friendly viewfinder is wonderful. With a nice catalog of lenses, this is a black-and-white camera that can be used in any situation. Finally black and white with excellent fine resolution, usable high ISO, and professional grade. The images have fine detail, highlights, and shadows. Easy-to-use menus and settings that address every situation you may encounter. For those who remember all those color filters for black and white are usable to manipulate the the images before tripping the shutter button.
Two things to consider. LCD panel does not flip up or rotate. I use a Ref a right angle viewfinder by Pentax. It works well on all the 35mm Pentax cameras and some other brands. It rotates and has a 2x setting which is nice for macro. The other thing I have noticed is the very sensitive shutter button. It has a very sensitive and short motion to trip the shutter.
I can highly recommend this camera to anyone who wants to do Monochrome. You will not be disappointed
Monochrome is far from a niche place in photography. You see it in many venues. It is not limited now to the conversion of color digital or shooting film. We now have a well thought out Monochrome from Pentax at a more palatable price than Lecia.

[Yes] To preface this story, this is my first DSLR and my first Pentax.
Before this I had owned two mirrorless cameras.
First I started with a Lumix S1 but was looking to upgrade and convinced myself to sell everything to buy into the Fuji GFX system.
To my (and many others) surprise I was dissatisfied with not only the build quality of the 50sii but the images I was creating with it.
Something just didn't look right. I couldn't place my finger on it but things looked... sterile?
I thought a digital medium format sensor was the answer to replicating my medium format film cameras but alas, this was not the case.
I wanted to capture a black and white film look with a digital camera but couldn't afford a Leica monochrome.
It was a risky move on my part but I sold my GFX after doing a lot of research into the K3iii monochrome.
The first day I took it out I knew I had made the right choice.
Images from this camera are pure magic and have tricked many people around me thinking it was film.
Match this sensor with a M42 adapter and throw some Super-Takumar, it looks identical to B&W film.
Love shooting this thing at night at ridiculously high ISO levels.
The build quality is like a tank. View finder is bright and easy to focus. Speaking of focusing, the auto focus is faster than some of the mirrorless cameras Ive used.
I don't ever want to go back to mirrorless after using this gem, there's nothing like framing your image through the lens.
My only complaint is it takes a second to get used to exposing correctly. You need to be very mindful of blown out highlights.
Images match that of any full frame camera I've ever used.
I love this thing so much I can only hope Pentax will release a full frame monochrome camera in the future to compete with Leica.
Anyway, if you love B&W photography then this is the camera for you.

[Stereo ] Coming from a Pentax K1000 owner since 1978, I have to say that this K3iii is the most impressive Pentax camera that I have owned as of yet. I'm very happy with the purchase.
Thank you B&H.

[DNG, JPEG, Raw] I spent a fair amount of time trying to decide whether it was worth it to replace my 10-year-old K5-iis and screw-drive 55-300. I shouldn’t have waited so long. The camera has more than lived up to the positive reviews so far, and I’m still working through the extensive customization options. The lens, while losing a stop of aperture, is quicker to focus and sharper than its predecessor. No regrets!

[3:2] Yes it's sharper than a Bayer color sensor. Yes it's high ISO noise is much much better. But the only reason for its being is the tones are accurate and what they should be. It's the difference between REAL black and white and a computer simulation of black and white, literally. It's digital black and white film. Worth every penny if you can appreciate what it is.

And Pentax ergonomics are the best in the business. This UI is so good, I never have to go into the Q menu for anything. I wish the playback button was in the same place as the K1 and that Live view was a button like the K1, but those are minor quibbles in a brilliant camera interface. The SLR viewfinder is wonderful after 5 years shooting mostly EVF's. I didn't realize how much better it really is.

[P-TTL] The Pentax Monochrome, following Leica's lead into digital black and white photography, opens the doors for affordable, high quality rebirth of B&W images for hobbyists and professional photographers alike.
As a young hobbyist I will never forget watching my first image emerge in the development pan in the dimly red light room. A second AHA moment was my first view of B&W negatives taken with my first Leica rangefinder camera and lens. I now have a third, and possibly most important event, that occurred when I reviewed my first images using the Pentax monochrome camera -- finely nuanced B&W pictures that virtually jumped off from the view screen. My first thought was that I had been shortsighted and tight-fisted by my initial response to the high price of the Leica Monochrome cameras. My second thought was that there now exists a clear, challenging future for hobbyists and professional photographers. The question most photographers now have to answer for themselves is how best to capture their images. There is a bright future awaiting B&W photography. The Pentax monochrome is an incredible photographic instrument at an unbelievably low price. Leica opened the door to 35mm photography and now has opened the door to digital B&W photography. The Pentax DSLR is the first to follow Leica and has done so with its SOA improvements to DSLR cameras. It will not take long for all the usual copycats to compete in this new and exciting dimension of photography.

[DNG, JPEG, Raw] I have had this camera for about 4 months now and I am very very happy with it. I have been using a mirrorless full frame camera for the last 5 years, but the prospect of a monochrome-focused camera was too good to pass up. I specialize in monochromatic images and have a lot of success selling them in a gallery in Juneau, Alaska. This has brought an excitement to my artwork that I haven't felt in some time. It really brings a film-grain richness to the images, the noise is handled beautifully, and the dynamic range is excellent. I ended up selling all of my Sony FF gear and am all-in with this beauty. I also print a lot of cyanotypes from the files and this camera has improved my digital files I use for the digital negatives I use in the process. Thank you, Pentax, for thinking outside the box.

[Yes] Researched all manufactured DSLR for several months before making my decision. The K3 mark iii is remarkable. Its capabilities, technology, design, the way it feels, the fit the finished. This PENTAX K3 mark iii competes and surpasses other name brand DSLR for half the money. The K3 mark iii monochrome is next. $$$$ best deal out there.

[-3 to 20 EV] I posted the most-recent review of this camera, where I tried it and loved it, but fretted over its autofocus performance--so returned it.

That was a mistake. The black-and-white quality from this camera brought it back to me. There's just simply no way to easily replicate the results by editing color. I've spent lots of time trying to do this. In some scenarios, I get close, but at the expense of much effort.  If you shoot lots of black and white, you will not be disappointed with this camera.

And since I've had more time with the camera--and have used a wider variety of lenses with it--I've learned that the autofocus is better than my initial impression, snappy-fast on some lenses, in fact. If mirrorless AF is considered a 10, I'd give this an 8.
