Ideal for solar photography, this 6.6 x 6.6" Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cinema ND Filter 6.6x6.6 5-Stopfrom Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cinema ND Filter 6.6x6.6 5-Stopuses a rare earth mineral coating to create exceedingly neutral NDs. The filter is made from 4mm thick Schott Superwite glass, with a multicoating that is bonded in the middle to increase scratch resistance. Firecrest filters are neutral across all spectrums, including UV, visible, and infrared.

Firecrest Ultra IRND is a carbon-based filter with hyper-neutral color balance. It can be used for uniform near infrared filtration allowing your camera's color science to remain untouched. The Ultra IRND is equally compatible with ARRI, RED, Blackmagic Design, Canon, Panasonic, and other modern digital cinema cameras. This filter allows the image to be captured as the manufacturer intended.

4mm Cine Firecrest Ultra IRND have the same features as the popular 4mm Cine Firecrest ND. Firecrest Cine filters were renamed in 2019 to match the Ultra photography filters which received a new lap and polish manufacturing technique. For cinema sizes, the 4mm Firecrest ND were always lapped and polished where the 2mm photography versions were not. 4mm Firecrest ND and 4mm Firecrest Ultra IRND both have identical optical performance with the engraving being the only difference.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I bought this VND for my sigma 16mm 1.4 lens , will it work with this lens??

A: Yes, the 67mm Urth N2-400 Variable ND filter will work with your Sigma 16mm f/1.4 lens. Due to the design of the filter front ring and the mounting style of your Sigma's bayonet hood, there might be some interference if you try to use the filter and lens hood at the same time.

Q: 2. Hi Wanted to know Does it work to look at Sun . To check sun position?

A: No, it's not safe to use a 6 stop ND filter like the NiSi Cinema Variable ND Viewing Filter with Lanyard to directly view the sun, as ND filters are not made for a human eye, and would not protect your eyes properly from the sun's UV rays.

Q: 3. Is this filter just loose Wratten or does it have a cardboard frame or something to make it more rigid in the filter holder?

A: The Kodak 4x4" (100mm) 85N9 Color Conversion Wratten 2 Optical Gel Filter does not come with a cardboard frame to make it more rigid in the holder. The filter will work fine without additional framing.

Q: 4. How thin are these? Looking to use them for the rear filter holder of my Tamron 15-30mm 2.6 g2 for Canon

A: These are .1mm thick.

Q: 5. How are these piece of glass shipped? I want to know how secured are they when it comes to shipping as I have never seen anyone do an unboxing video on filters like these. I'm afraid it might get broken in transit among other things.

A: The filter is stored in a Schneider's Padded Filter Pouch.

Q: 6. Any chance someone has a template (or the measurements) for the interior dimensions of the slot? (ie, then trim to fit without wrinkling / fingerprinting the film)?

A: hey! Unfortunately not! Bought this one for my dad and I don't think he has already used it.. ;) Sorry, regards Johannes

Q: 7. What is the diameter of the round glass filter in millimeters?

A: The NiSi Cinema True Color 1-5 Stop Variable Neutral Density Filter for C5 Matte Box can be used with 95mm cinema lenses and lenses with filter threads up to 82mm.

Q: 8. Does the wheel have stops indicators? Or do we have to guess what stop we are at.

A: The NiSi Cinema True Color 1-5 Stop Variable Neutral Density Filter for C5 Matte Box (1 to 5-Stop) does not have stop indicators.

Q: 9. Does this have the option to not use any ND, while keeping the filter in the adapter to avoid dust seeping into the hole?

A: You will need to add this clear filter to the drop in filter slot in the Canon EF RF filter adapter. This filter will make sure no dust gets in the camera. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1434115-REG/canon_3444c001_drop_in_clear_filter_a.html

Q: 10. Does anyone know the diameter of this filter's larger top area?

A: While the Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (82mm) has filter threads that connect to 82mm filters, the manufacturer does not indicate the exterior diameter of this filter in their specifications.

[Multi Coated] suppose you want to shoot wide open f/ 1.4 or f/1.2.. counting down from the "sunny 16 rules" from a bright sunny day, you would need a 2-3 stop worth of ND filter for the camera to be able to shoot at that open aperature, this can do it!! The mild color cast is easily adjusted post.

[9 x 8.7 x 1.4"] I was really pleased with the images that I have been able to create with this filter. As soon as I got it I took it to the coast and tried a bunch of long exposure shots at sunset. When I got the images onto my PC I was very happy to see that I could not tell which images I had used the filter on by looking at the colors. The colors were identical with and without the filter!

[9 x 8.7 x 1.4"] I was on a short road trip and used this alone, and with the Formatt Hitech 10 stop ND filter. The results were superb in both cases - no colour cast. An added benefit of the Formatt filter is it is very thin, so vignetting is less of an issue. I would encourage people to take a filter wrench, just in case...

[Multi Coated] Hi,

Purchased in late 2020 for Sigma 105mm 1.4 (Nikon).

This ND filter is really good because it does not create any color cast. The ND allows me to use the lens at f1.4 without overexposing the shadows (while using my strobes). It is a great ND filter, more neutral than a few others I purchased for a 85mm 1.8.

High recommendations.

[Multi Coated] Another ND filter in my tool kit. Different brands can produce somewhat different effects. Some people like it, other's don't. I prefer to look at it as another option when making my picture. It is nice to have options. Optical quality is awesome, and that is what matters.

[1.035 lb] I've been refining my ultra slow photography techniques for about a year now and figured it was time to graduate to 'the beast' - Firecrest's Nd1600. The results are amazing with the clarity I was hoping for, minimal barreling and silky smooth threading onto my lens.

Ultra slow photography is the most technically challenging in my photo skill set (I use a Pluto Trigger to do the math for me) and having a reliable 16 stop filter to rely on helps keep me focused on the art rather than the techno details.

[1.035 lb] Yes these cost a bit more than other brands but you do get what you pay for. You don't get the color shifts that come with Tiffens, and to some degree Schneiders. The DPs and DITs I work with still are requesting these on every shoot so it was time for me to buy a set of my own. Super happy with them.

[1.035 lb] For this review of my ND 3.0 filter, 10 stop, I used a tripod, the Nikon MC- 36A remote and the ND Expert Pro app. This was my very first imaging with this filter. What I was looking to see the effect of the filter and what, if any was there a shift in color. As you can see, the color shift was minor. This is a pricey filter, however, it performed as expected.
