Ideal for solar photography, this 6.6 x 6.6" Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cinema ND Filter 6.6x6.6" 6-Stopfrom Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cinema ND Filter 6.6x6.6" 6-Stopuses a rare earth mineral coating to create exceedingly neutral NDs. The filter is made from 4mm thick Schott Superwite glass, with a multicoating that is bonded in the middle to increase scratch resistance. Firecrest filters are neutral across all spectrums, including UV, visible, and infrared.

Firecrest Ultra IRND is a carbon-based filter with hyper-neutral color balance. It can be used for uniform near infrared filtration allowing your camera's color science to remain untouched. The Ultra IRND is equally compatible with ARRI, RED, Blackmagic Design, Canon, Panasonic, and other modern digital cinema cameras. This filter allows the image to be captured as the manufacturer intended.

4mm Cine Firecrest Ultra IRND have the same features as the popular 4mm Cine Firecrest ND. Firecrest Cine filters were renamed in 2019 to match the Ultra photography filters which received a new lap and polish manufacturing technique. For cinema sizes, the 4mm Firecrest ND were always lapped and polished where the 2mm photography versions were not. 4mm Firecrest ND and 4mm Firecrest Ultra IRND both have identical optical performance with the engraving being the only difference.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the diameter of the round glass filter in millimeters?

A: The NiSi Cinema True Color 1-5 Stop Variable Neutral Density Filter for C5 Matte Box can be used with 95mm cinema lenses and lenses with filter threads up to 82mm.

Q: 2. If proper care is taken, I'm just curious as to the longevity/ quality of these filters? Will they last more than 6 months? Many years?

A: In our experience the main danger to longevity is water or solvent damage. The other issue would be if they become scratched. In a good clean environment I would expect you to get several years use.

Q: 3. Hi Wanted to know Does it work to look at Sun . To check sun position?

A: No, it's not safe to use a 6 stop ND filter like the NiSi Cinema Variable ND Viewing Filter with Lanyard to directly view the sun, as ND filters are not made for a human eye, and would not protect your eyes properly from the sun's UV rays.

Q: 4. Does this have the option to not use any ND, while keeping the filter in the adapter to avoid dust seeping into the hole?

A: You will need to add this clear filter to the drop in filter slot in the Canon EF RF filter adapter. This filter will make sure no dust gets in the camera. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1434115-REG/canon_3444c001_drop_in_clear_filter_a.html

Q: 5. Any chance someone has a template (or the measurements) for the interior dimensions of the slot? (ie, then trim to fit without wrinkling / fingerprinting the film)?

A: hey! Unfortunately not! Bought this one for my dad and I don't think he has already used it.. ;) Sorry, regards Johannes

Q: 6. Does anyone know the diameter of this filter's larger top area?

A: While the Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (82mm) has filter threads that connect to 82mm filters, the manufacturer does not indicate the exterior diameter of this filter in their specifications.

Q: 7. What Filter Thickness is? 2 or 4 mm?

A: The Schneider 4 x 5.65" RHOdium Full Spectrum Neutral Density filters are 4mm thick.

Q: 8. Is this antireflection-coated?

A: The manufacturer states that this filter has an 8 layer nano coating.

Q: 9. How are these piece of glass shipped? I want to know how secured are they when it comes to shipping as I have never seen anyone do an unboxing video on filters like these. I'm afraid it might get broken in transit among other things.

A: The filter is stored in a Schneider's Padded Filter Pouch.

Q: 10. can you add another B&W filter on top of this one?

A: Yes, although depending on your focal length you will start to see vignetting and potentially the edge of the filter in the corners of the frame. This will be especially true at wider angles and with more filters stacked.

[9 x 8.8 x 1.3"] suppose you want to shoot wide open f/ 1.4 or f/1.2.. counting down from the "sunny 16 rules" from a bright sunny day, you would need a 2-3 stop worth of ND filter for the camera to be able to shoot at that open aperature, this can do it!! The mild color cast is easily adjusted post.

[Multi Coated] I was really pleased with the images that I have been able to create with this filter. As soon as I got it I took it to the coast and tried a bunch of long exposure shots at sunset. When I got the images onto my PC I was very happy to see that I could not tell which images I had used the filter on by looking at the colors. The colors were identical with and without the filter!

[9 x 8.8 x 1.3"] The quality of these filters is outstanding. While they are somewhat expensive, they are worth the price point. The one thing I fail to understand is with the attention to quality and detail the weak link is the installation of the light leak gasket that is included with the filter. It is a challenge to affix it to the filter and have had difficulty with every filter I have from them. I don't know why Formatt-Hitech does not place it on the filter as part of the manufacturing process.

[Multi Coated] Another ND filter in my tool kit. Different brands can produce somewhat different effects. Some people like it, other's don't. I prefer to look at it as another option when making my picture. It is nice to have options. Optical quality is awesome, and that is what matters.

[1.055 lb] I didn't see any reviews here, so I'd chime in:

I purchased this with the Sigma 105mm f/1.4, and surprised that it has no noticeably color cast (compared to some ND filters for my 85mm lens).

I'm quite satisfied. The glass is very thin and light, like 30-50% of the weight of a UV filter for the same diameter.

I use this to get wider apertures in the studio setting, given that my strobes can remain fairly strong, and the ambient lighting can either be cut at higher shutter speeds (1/200) or introduced at lower speeds (1/30-1/60). A joy to use.

[9 x 8.8 x 1.3"] Hi,

Purchased in late 2020 for Sigma 105mm 1.4 (Nikon).

This ND filter is really good because it does not create any color cast. The ND allows me to use the lens at f1.4 without overexposing the shadows (while using my strobes). It is a great ND filter, more neutral than a few others I purchased for a 85mm 1.8.

High recommendations.

[Multi Coated] I was on a short road trip and used this alone, and with the Formatt Hitech 10 stop ND filter. The results were superb in both cases - no colour cast. An added benefit of the Formatt filter is it is very thin, so vignetting is less of an issue. I would encourage people to take a filter wrench, just in case...

[9 x 8.8 x 1.3"] I am a newbie to ND photography and while researching ND filters so many photographers I respected recommended the Firecrest Ultra...and I am very glad I listened to them. I plan on buying the less dense ones too.
