Ideal for solar photography, this 6.6 x 6.6" Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cinema ND Filter 7-Stopfrom Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cinema ND Filter 7-Stopuses a rare earth mineral coating to create exceedingly neutral NDs. The filter is made from 4mm thick Schott Superwite glass, with a multicoating that is bonded in the middle to increase scratch resistance. Firecrest filters are neutral across all spectrums, including UV, visible, and infrared.

Firecrest Ultra IRND is a carbon-based filter with hyper-neutral color balance. It can be used for uniform near infrared filtration allowing your camera's color science to remain untouched. The Ultra IRND is equally compatible with ARRI, RED, Blackmagic Design, Canon, Panasonic, and other modern digital cinema cameras. This filter allows the image to be captured as the manufacturer intended.

4mm Cine Firecrest Ultra IRND have the same features as the popular 4mm Cine Firecrest ND. Firecrest Cine filters were renamed in 2019 to match the Ultra photography filters which received a new lap and polish manufacturing technique. For cinema sizes, the 4mm Firecrest ND were always lapped and polished where the 2mm photography versions were not. 4mm Firecrest ND and 4mm Firecrest Ultra IRND both have identical optical performance with the engraving being the only difference.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

Q: 1. Does the wheel have stops indicators? Or do we have to guess what stop we are at.

A: The NiSi Cinema True Color 1-5 Stop Variable Neutral Density Filter for C5 Matte Box (1 to 5-Stop) does not have stop indicators.

Q: 2. Thin enough to fit in the rear filter holder of the Tamron 15-30mm 2.8 G2 for Canon?

A: Yes.

Q: 3. The picture shows the filter with the front and rear Defender Case. Does the Defender case come with this filter?

A: Yes, the PolarPro Helix Variable Neutral Density Filter comes with the filters shown in the picture.

Q: 4. Hi Wanted to know Does it work to look at Sun . To check sun position?

A: No, it's not safe to use a 6 stop ND filter like the NiSi Cinema Variable ND Viewing Filter with Lanyard to directly view the sun, as ND filters are not made for a human eye, and would not protect your eyes properly from the sun's UV rays.

Q: 5. What is the diameter of the round glass filter in millimeters?

A: The NiSi Cinema True Color 1-5 Stop Variable Neutral Density Filter for C5 Matte Box can be used with 95mm cinema lenses and lenses with filter threads up to 82mm.

Q: 6. Many variable neutral density filters either cause a color shift at darker settings or the dreaded "X-effect" on wide angle lenses. Does this filter suffer from those issues?

A: Any variable ND over 6-7 stops can create the X-effect. And that is the deign and physics of a variable ND filter. And it depends on the lens you are using and the light you are shooting under. As for the color shift almost all have some color shift including the Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (77mm). These are higher models of filters, https://bhpho.to/3TSB4JH

Q: 7. How thin are these Wratten 2 filters compared to the original Eastman Kodak Wrattens?

A: This Kodak 3 x 3" Neutral Density (ND) #96 2.0 Optical Gelatin Wratten 2 Filter is very accurate, and more durable than the original Eastmen Kodak Wrattens.

Q: 8. If proper care is taken, I'm just curious as to the longevity/ quality of these filters? Will they last more than 6 months? Many years?

A: In our experience the main danger to longevity is water or solvent damage. The other issue would be if they become scratched. In a good clean environment I would expect you to get several years use.

Q: 9. What Filter Thickness is? 2 or 4 mm?

A: The Schneider 4 x 5.65" RHOdium Full Spectrum Neutral Density filters are 4mm thick.

Q: 10. Does it have hard stops?

A: The Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (82mm) features smooth twist adjustments rather than hard stops for each stop. This allows for seamless and precise control over the amount of light reduction. The filter can be easily adjusted to achieve the desired exposure without any abrupt changes or limitations.

[Multi Coated] I didn't see any reviews here, so I'd chime in:

I purchased this with the Sigma 105mm f/1.4, and surprised that it has no noticeably color cast (compared to some ND filters for my 85mm lens).

I'm quite satisfied. The glass is very thin and light, like 30-50% of the weight of a UV filter for the same diameter.

I use this to get wider apertures in the studio setting, given that my strobes can remain fairly strong, and the ambient lighting can either be cut at higher shutter speeds (1/200) or introduced at lower speeds (1/30-1/60). A joy to use.

[Multi Coated] I've been refining my ultra slow photography techniques for about a year now and figured it was time to graduate to 'the beast' - Firecrest's Nd1600. The results are amazing with the clarity I was hoping for, minimal barreling and silky smooth threading onto my lens.

Ultra slow photography is the most technically challenging in my photo skill set (I use a Pluto Trigger to do the math for me) and having a reliable 16 stop filter to rely on helps keep me focused on the art rather than the techno details.

[Multi Coated] The quality of these filters is outstanding. While they are somewhat expensive, they are worth the price point. The one thing I fail to understand is with the attention to quality and detail the weak link is the installation of the light leak gasket that is included with the filter. It is a challenge to affix it to the filter and have had difficulty with every filter I have from them. I don't know why Formatt-Hitech does not place it on the filter as part of the manufacturing process.

[1.055 lb] I am a newbie to ND photography and while researching ND filters so many photographers I respected recommended the Firecrest Ultra...and I am very glad I listened to them. I plan on buying the less dense ones too.

[1.055 lb] I was really pleased with the images that I have been able to create with this filter. As soon as I got it I took it to the coast and tried a bunch of long exposure shots at sunset. When I got the images onto my PC I was very happy to see that I could not tell which images I had used the filter on by looking at the colors. The colors were identical with and without the filter!

[1.055 lb] Hi,

Purchased in late 2020 for Sigma 105mm 1.4 (Nikon).

This ND filter is really good because it does not create any color cast. The ND allows me to use the lens at f1.4 without overexposing the shadows (while using my strobes). It is a great ND filter, more neutral than a few others I purchased for a 85mm 1.8.

High recommendations.

[Multi Coated] I bought this filter (95mm) to shoot the August 2017 eclipse. It worked perfectly. This filter, when shot in AWB (let camera choose white balance) does not add any color cast to the image. The images will be white, with no noticeable orange cast. you can always add an orange cast in post processing if desired.

I was very happy with my images in 2017 and plan to use this filter again for the upcoming April 2024 eclipse.

[Multi Coated] Yes these cost a bit more than other brands but you do get what you pay for. You don't get the color shifts that come with Tiffens, and to some degree Schneiders. The DPs and DITs I work with still are requesting these on every shoot so it was time for me to buy a set of my own. Super happy with them.
