Ideal for solar photography, this 6.6 x 6.6" Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cinema ND Filter 9-Stopfrom Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Cinema ND Filter 9-Stopuses a rare earth mineral coating to create exceedingly neutral NDs. The filter is made from 4mm thick Schott Superwite glass, with a multicoating that is bonded in the middle to increase scratch resistance. Firecrest filters are neutral across all spectrums, including UV, visible, and infrared.

Firecrest Ultra IRND is a carbon-based filter with hyper-neutral color balance. It can be used for uniform near infrared filtration allowing your camera's color science to remain untouched. The Ultra IRND is equally compatible with ARRI, RED, Blackmagic Design, Canon, Panasonic, and other modern digital cinema cameras. This filter allows the image to be captured as the manufacturer intended.

4mm Cine Firecrest Ultra IRND have the same features as the popular 4mm Cine Firecrest ND. Firecrest Cine filters were renamed in 2019 to match the Ultra photography filters which received a new lap and polish manufacturing technique. For cinema sizes, the 4mm Firecrest ND were always lapped and polished where the 2mm photography versions were not. 4mm Firecrest ND and 4mm Firecrest Ultra IRND both have identical optical performance with the engraving being the only difference.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

A: It is smooth. Most variable ND filters are smooth so make the transition smoother in video.

If you would be shooting outdoors the filter factor cuts between 1.2-1.5 stop of light to help correct exposure when shooting with snow.

[1.045 lb] Highly recommended. I purchased a 4-stop ND filter (1.2). It never comes off my Sigma 105mm f/1.4. Practically all my headshots and portraits (250 clients) since the purchase were taken with this filter. I can keep the shutter speed in a reasonable range with strobes (1/30 -- 1/200) without relying on high-speed sync. I can also keep the strobes at a reasonable range (1/4 -- 1/128), which wouldn't be possible without a 4-stop loss of light transmission. Other ND filters have funky colors - maybe I was lucky but this one has not created any noticeable color shift. Thank you Formatt!! 5

[1.045 lb] I bought this filter (95mm) to shoot the August 2017 eclipse. It worked perfectly. This filter, when shot in AWB (let camera choose white balance) does not add any color cast to the image. The images will be white, with no noticeable orange cast. you can always add an orange cast in post processing if desired. I was very happy with my images in 2017 and plan to use this filter again for the upcoming April 2024 eclipse. 5

[Multi Coated] I put these firecrest NDs head to head with PolarPros NDs and these are slightly more sharp and higher quality than polar pros. Just holding these in your hand you can feel the quality of the build. Theyre a breeze taking them on and off of the lens as well. Worth the top dollar they are. 5

[Multi Coated] For this review of my ND 3.0 filter, 10 stop, I used a tripod, the Nikon MC- 36A remote and the ND Expert Pro app. This was my very first imaging with this filter. What I was looking to see the effect of the filter and what, if any was there a shift in color. As you can see, the color shift was minor. This is a pricey filter, however, it performed as expected. 5

[1.045 lb] I didn't see any reviews here, so I'd chime in: I purchased this with the Sigma 105mm f/1.4, and surprised that it has no noticeably color cast (compared to some ND filters for my 85mm lens). I'm quite satisfied. The glass is very thin and light, like 30-50% of the weight of a UV filter for the same diameter. I use this to get wider apertures in the studio setting, given that my strobes can remain fairly strong, and the ambient lighting can either be cut at higher shutter speeds (1/200) or introduced at lower speeds (1/30-1/60). A joy to use. 5

[1.045 lb] I've been refining my ultra slow photography techniques for about a year now and figured it was time to graduate to 'the beast' - Firecrest's Nd1600. The results are amazing with the clarity I was hoping for, minimal barreling and silky smooth threading onto my lens. Ultra slow photography is the most technically challenging in my photo skill set (I use a Pluto Trigger to do the math for me) and having a reliable 16 stop filter to rely on helps keep me focused on the art rather than the techno details. 5

[1.045 lb] Yes these cost a bit more than other brands but you do get what you pay for. You don't get the color shifts that come with Tiffens, and to some degree Schneiders. The DPs and DITs I work with still are requesting these on every shoot so it was time for me to buy a set of my own. Super happy with them. 5
